MISSION STATEMENT
Akron Community Foundation seeks to improve the quality of life
in the Greater Akron area by building permanent endowments
and providing philanthropic leadership that enables donors to
make lasting investments in the community. To fulfill this mission,
the foundation is committed to:
Serving Akron and surrounding areas with creative, visionary
and sensitive grants that address the evolving needs of an area
experiencing rapid economic and social change.
Devoting special emphasis to programs that enrich the
community in the distinct areas of arts and culture, education,
health and human services, and civic affairs.
Advising donors in the areas of their particular concerns and
assisting them in achieving the most beneficial results.
Performing as a responsible solicitor and prudent manager of philanthropic
assets created through charitable gifts and bequests.
Demonstrating community leadership by seeking innovative
programs and by acting as a catalyst in identifying problems
and sharing information with other organizations.

Our theme for this year’s annual report, Inspire, defines how I feel
as I close my two-year term as board chair. I’ve been truly inspired
by the people in this community who share a passion for Akron
Community Foundation and who give so generously to better the
Greater Akron area. We’re fortunate to have such a vibrant and active
group of dedicated supporters.
The board has had a very productive year. In addition to completing
the strategic planning initiative we began last year, we established
both short- and long-term direction and focus for the foundation’s
activities. As a result, we are better prepared to take advantage of
future opportunities and meet the challenges facing foundations
across the country as communities continue to change and evolve.
I want to thank foundation President Jody Bacon, an outstanding
professional staff and the board of trustees for their tireless
efforts to assure the foundation maintains its leadership role in the
community’s ongoing development. Under Jody’s guidance, our
assets have continued to grow, and the foundation stands on
secure footing for the future.
On a personal note, I want to thank Scott Lyons for his nine years of
outstanding service to the board. The foundation and our community
are stronger for his efforts.

Inspiration gave birth to Akron Community Foundation. Think
what our community would be like if Edwin Shaw had not
been inspired to provide an opportunity for each of us to
participate in, and benefit from, philanthropy. His bequest of
$
1 million dollars given 51 years ago established Akron Community
Foundation. Since then thousands of residents have added to the
permanent endowment in amounts large and small. Each of us has
benefited over the years from local arts, education, civic, and health
and human services programs supported by Akron Community
Foundation grants.
I am pleased to report that Shaw’s initial gift of $ 1 million has
grown to more than $ 142 million, enabling the foundation to fund
850 grants, reinvesting $ 6.5 million in the community through
programs and projects of local nonprofit organizations. Since 1955
total foundation grants exceed $ 63 million.
More important than the total grants is the impact they have on the
quality of our lives. This report illustrates, through stories of local
citizens, how they and many others are touched by grants from the
foundation. These are just a few of the stories we have to share.
The foundation is able to grow and expand its impact on the
community through the continued support of its donors. I thank each
of you who support this extraordinary way to make and keep our
community strong. It is the pooling of our financial resources that
makes a difference and keeps inspiring us to do more.

Imagine if something you did today could inspire local residents
for years to come.
A gift to the Community Fund enables each of us to do exceptional
things. This fund is unique, pooling and investing gifts from all over
the community. As it continues to grow, it keeps pace with the
community’s changing needs and improves life for future generations.
Each quarter, the foundation’s board uses a portion of the fund’s
assets for grant-making in one of four areas: arts and culture,
civic affairs, health and human services, and education. Grants go to
qualified 501(c)(3) organizations that provide the most useful and
timely services to residents. The board prefers collaborative programs
that promote proven ways of strengthening the community.
Support the Community Fund
The Community Fund’s ability to meet our changing needs is only as
strong as its financial support. You have the opportunity to impact our
community forever with a gift in any amount. The foundation welcomes
gifts of cash, publicly traded securities, closely held stock, insurance,
real estate, retirement plans and other readily marketable gifts.
Donors can choose to make gifts as a memorial or tribute to honor

Singing was her life.
However, life changed 20 years ago when opera student Nancy
Ulrich’s legs gave out during rehearsal. She learned she had Multiple
Sclerosis. Standing for performances would soon become difficult.
Nancy found a new creative outlet in Master Singers, a community
chorus specializing in traditional choral music. Front-row performers
remain seated, enabling disabled singers to participate equally
during concerts.
However, sitting doesn’t ease the difficulty of the group’s repertoire,
which Nancy said she enjoys: “Singing is a very physical thing.
It challenges me.”

executives at SCORE’s Akron chapter
provide free counseling and mentoring
to local entrepreneurs, and lead workshops
and seminars on small business

That’s what Lori Primm asked herself after visiting Hudson’s
First & Main shopping district several years ago. Money and
sales knack to spare, she began work on the Shoe Gallery.
However, she needed some expert advice before opening her
new business.
Father-in-law and Cascade Auto Group founder Don Primm
referred her to SCORE, where a team of retired executives
provided her with free marketing and start-up help. Now, she’s
referring people to them.
“I put a business plan together… and now I’m on the sales floor,”
Primm said. “I love it.”

HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES
Medical costs are skyrocketing.
Brenda Bisesi knows this well. Without health insurance through
work, the single mother used to pay her mortgage first and worry
about medical bills later.
Dr. Mark Smith introduced her to Access to Care, a program that
matches low-income, working residents with a network of free
and low-cost health care services. Brenda now has peace of mind
that she has access to quality care.
“It is nice to know that if I get sick, I can afford to see my doctor,”
she said.
In Summit County, an estimated
22,000 residents are uninsured
and don’t qualify for Medicaid.

Enough was enough.
Melissa Fickert was tired of being turned down for jobs because
she lacked a high school diploma. Since becoming pregnant at
age 17, she had married, raised a family and become certified in
medical assisting. The only thing missing was her diploma.
Project LEARN’s GED preparation program prepared her to pass–
and ace–her exam. Now, she is an assistant at an optical office.
“I did it for my kids,” Melissa said. “I wanted to show them that if
mom can do it…so can they.”

Akron Community Foundation’s Family of Funds inspires hearts and
minds, and touches the souls of local residents. Eclectic by its very
nature, the Family of Funds’ primary mission is to serve specific
populations with intense interest and a keen understanding of their
respective needs.
The Family of Funds is made up of permanently endowed funds,
each of which is represented by an independent advisory committee.
Committee members meet annually, awarding grants to nonprofit
programs that advance their fund’s unique mission in the community.

A small grant can make a big difference.
A $ 700 grant to Family and Community Services enabled one
volunteer, 16-year-old Mary Ellen Mann, to host a birthday party
for local military children. The program earned the praise of Ohio
First Lady Frances Strickland and former First Lady Hope Taft, who
presented her with a 2007 Make a Difference Day Award.
The Millennium Fund encourages philanthropy by and for the benefit
of local children, inspiring a new generation of givers.
When we work together, we all win.
That’s the concept behind Ricky Powers Youth Football Clinic.
City Series football players joined Powers, a former University
of Michigan standout, to mentor young athletes. A $ 1,000 grant
funded the two-day event, which emphasized sportsmanship,
teamwork, commitment, respect and responsibility.
The Vernon L. Odom Fund inspires innovative programs like this,
which improve the quality of life for Akron’s minority communities.

Good grants give hope.
Violet’s Cupboard strives to enhance the quality of life for local
residents with HIV/AIDS. A $ 2,000 grant funds its partnership with
Community AIDS Network. Together, the organizations offer HIV
testing and counseling to comfort those living with the virus.
Gay Community Endowment Fund grants inspire understanding and
philanthropy among the GLBT community and throughout Greater Akron.
Empowering women strengthens our community.
This year, the Women’s Endowment Fund empowered women
through safety and economic-empowerment grants. An $ 11,000
grant to Mustard Seed Development Center provides credit and
budget counseling to women seeking financial stability.
Women’s Endowment Fund grants support positive social change for
local women and girls, improving the entire community as a result.

Medina County Community Fund grants motivate residents.
A $ 4,000 grant supported Children’s Hospital Medical Center’s Reach
Out and Read program, which provides free books to patients at two
pediatric offices in Medina County. As a result, some of the county’s
youngest residents will be inspired to pursue a lifetime of learning.
The Medina County Community Fund promotes philanthropy and
lasting support for local cultural, educational and health care programs.
Open dialogue makes for strong growth.
Salvation Army’s Girl Talk encourages young women to embrace their
development through candid discussion. A $ 1,332 grant funds the
program, which explores the sexual attitudes of mothers and daughters,
and promotes responsible decision-making and positive self-image.

Good neighbors make great communities.
The Hudson Public Schools Endowment Fund honors the recipients
– and imparters – of good education. Scholarships reward students
for excellence in academics, citizenship, entrepreneurship and
athletics. Grant funding enables teachers to explore new frontiers
in education and to promote the teaching and learning process.
As local residents cruise Canton Road, they can thank the Ellet Women’s
Club for the roadside colors. A $ 3,975 Neighborhood Partnership grant
funded their Flower Basket program, as well as an events sign to keep
residents aware of upcoming neighborhood activities.
Seventeen named funds prepare students and educators to reach
the hearts and minds of a new generation.
Through the Neighborhood Partnership Program, government, businesses,
neighbors and nonprofits work together to improve our community.

It was a miracle that led Rev. Ronald J. Fowler to a life of service.
As a young boy living in Bedford, he fell into a segregated swimming
hole where he almost drowned. A white girl – June Miracle – jumped
in to save him, a sign that he too should dedicate his life to helping
people of all colors and means.
Dr. Fowler’s life of service began in the Detroit Public Schools, where
he shaped the lives of students both in the classroom and on the
football field. His commitment to education continued as president
of Akron’s school board, co-chair of This City Reads and on the board
of Summit Education Initiative.
It was a miracle that led Reverend Fowler to a life of service.
Fowler recently headed The University of Akron’s Student Discipline
and Law Enforcement Policy Review Commission, helping improve the
university’s disciplinary and law-enforcement policies for years to come.
Rev. Fowler leads Arlington Church of God in holistic service to the
East Akron community. Elderly adults find housing through the church’s
AHOPES program. Residents gain much-needed health assistance
and education through the church’s medical board. A scholarship
committee helps college-bound and career-oriented high schoolers
achieve their goals, and a food bank is open to all in need.
Degrees from Kent State University, Anderson University and
Pittsburgh Theological Seminary might have equipped Rev. Fowler for
leadership, but nothing short of a miracle prepared him for service.
“…autograph life with excellence,” Fowler says. “We will all leave a
signature somewhere.”
Nowhere is that signature clearer than in Greater Akron.
