<strong>Desmond</strong> <strong>Peter</strong> <strong>Lazaro</strong> <strong>is</strong> a Brit<strong>is</strong>h art<strong>is</strong>t <strong>who</strong> <strong>has</strong> <strong>lived</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>India</strong> <strong>for</strong> over 15<br />
years. After complet<strong>in</strong>g a pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g degree <strong>in</strong> the UK (1987- 90), he was awarded<br />
the Commonwealth Scholarship to <strong>India</strong>. There he undertook h<strong>is</strong> Masters degree<br />
<strong>in</strong> Pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g at the M.S.University of Baroda. Dur<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>is</strong> period (1990- 94) he<br />
traveled <strong>India</strong> extensively and began to research the Pichhvai pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g tradition<br />
of Rajasthan.<br />
H<strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ation toward traditional pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g took him to Master Bannu Ved Pal<br />
Sharma the Jaipur m<strong>in</strong>iatur<strong>is</strong>t <strong>who</strong> became h<strong>is</strong> Guru and over the next 11 years<br />
he learnt the craft of m<strong>in</strong>iature and Pichhvai pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g under h<strong>is</strong> guidance. An<br />
experience later documented as part of h<strong>is</strong> doctoral d<strong>is</strong>sertation at the Pr<strong>in</strong>ce’s<br />
School of Traditional Art, London (2002). After complet<strong>in</strong>g h<strong>is</strong> PhD he was<br />
appo<strong>in</strong>ted as Academic Director to the Department of Traditional Arts,<br />
University of Balqa, Amman, Jordan. A position held <strong>for</strong> several years (2003/5)<br />
oversee<strong>in</strong>g the establ<strong>is</strong>hment of the Universities first pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g department.<br />
In 2004 h<strong>is</strong> research became the catalyst <strong>for</strong> an exhibition at the Museum<br />
Rietberg, Zurich, Switzerland and <strong>in</strong> 2005 h<strong>is</strong> thes<strong>is</strong> was publ<strong>is</strong>hed as ‘Materials,<br />
Methods & Symbol<strong>is</strong>m <strong>in</strong> the Pichhvai Pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g Tradition of Rajasthan’ (Map<strong>in</strong>,<br />
<strong>India</strong>). The book illustrates each aspect of the craft from iconography to color<br />
symbol<strong>is</strong>m and geometry to pigment preparation, draw<strong>in</strong>g upon a wealth of<br />
traditional pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g techniques from across <strong>India</strong>, Persia, Nepal and South East<br />
Asian.<br />
Hav<strong>in</strong>g returned to <strong>India</strong> <strong>in</strong> 2004 he then founded <strong>Lazaro</strong> & Co: The hand made<br />
pigments company.<br />
In 2005 he began collaborat<strong>in</strong>g with the Pr<strong>in</strong>ce’s School of Traditional Art,<br />
London, UK on a project, which, aims to establ<strong>is</strong>h a National School of<br />
Traditional Art <strong>in</strong> north <strong>India</strong>.<br />
To facilitate th<strong>is</strong> <strong>Desmond</strong> founded T.A.T: the Traditional Arts Trust, <strong>in</strong> February<br />
2006. T.A.T <strong>is</strong> a non profit, non government organization <strong>who</strong>se prime objective<br />
<strong>is</strong> the revival and cont<strong>in</strong>uity of traditional pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> North <strong>India</strong>, with specific<br />
reference to Pichhvai and M<strong>in</strong>iature pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g. T.A.T’s first project will be the<br />
establ<strong>is</strong>hment of 6 Gurukhul’s (micro centers of learn<strong>in</strong>g) throughout Rajasthan<br />
<strong>in</strong>: Udaipur, Nathdwara, Bhilwara, Jaipur, New Delhi and Kota. The project will<br />
sponsor the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of 2 young craftsmen <strong>for</strong> a period of two years, after which<br />
they will jo<strong>in</strong> the National School of Traditional Art <strong>in</strong> New Delhi. Here they will<br />
cont<strong>in</strong>ue tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> a further two years, receiv<strong>in</strong>g a broader art education, so<br />
that they are able meet the challenge of mak<strong>in</strong>g traditional art with<strong>in</strong> a<br />
contemporary context.<br />
In 2007 <strong>Desmond</strong> moved to Goa and <strong>has</strong> returned to contemporary based<br />
pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>is</strong> currently prepar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> <strong>is</strong> first one-man show at the Chemould<br />
Gallery, Mumbai, <strong>India</strong> (September 2008).
