Technical Resource <strong>Center</strong> (TRC)<br />
The Technical Resource <strong>Center</strong> (TRC) is a computerassisted<br />
lab designed to assist individuals in improving<br />
their basic skills. Within the lab there are three types of<br />
classes:<br />
Vocational Preparatory Instruction<br />
(VPI)<br />
The purpose of this program is to prepare students for<br />
academic, technical and personal success. This program<br />
strives to inspire and motivate students to become<br />
productive, self-sufficient members of society. The VPI<br />
program is based upon the assessed needs of the<br />
individual, and the academic and employability<br />
requirements related to Florida’s comprehensive<br />
Vocational Education programs.<br />
Adult Basic Education<br />
(ABE)<br />
The purpose of this program is to provide basic literacy<br />
and life skills for adults who are performing at or below the<br />
eighth grade level (0.0 – 8.9). The content develops basic<br />
literacy in all areas of knowledge.<br />
General <strong>Educational</strong> Development<br />
(GED)<br />
SPECIAL SUPPORT PROGRAM<br />
higher education, obtain technical training or fulfill a<br />
lifelong goal. The GED Tests measure knowledge in five<br />
different areas: writing/language arts, mathematics,<br />
reading, science, and social studies. The tests are offered<br />
in English and Spanish in the State of Florida. Adults who<br />
successfully pass the GED Tests in Florida are awarded a<br />
State of Florida High School Diploma. The GED diploma<br />
is accepted in nearly all United States colleges and<br />
universities as a high school equivalency credential.<br />
Adults with special needs may apply for special<br />
accommodations for the GED Tests. Documentation of<br />
the disabling condition must be submitted with the<br />
required forms. Special accommodations may include<br />
extended testing time, assistance from a scribe, use of a<br />
calculator, testing in a private room and/or frequent<br />
breaks. Special editions of the tests are also available in<br />
audiocassette, Braille and large print formats.<br />
Adults wishing to register for the GED Tests must do so in<br />
person. Candidates must provide either a State of Florida<br />
Driver License or State of Florida Identification Card and<br />
should bring their social security card for further<br />
verification of identity. Candidates must complete a GED<br />
Demographic Booklet Form and pay for the test at the<br />
time of registration.<br />
If candidates are in need of additional study, <strong>Miami</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong><br />
<strong>Educational</strong> <strong>Center</strong> also offers GED Preparation classes<br />
and the GED Fast Track Program.<br />
The purpose of this program is to prepare students for<br />
academic and personal success through obtaining the<br />
necessary skills required to pass the official GED Test and<br />
be awarded a State of Florida High School Diploma. This<br />
program strives to motivate students not only to obtain a<br />
GED, but also to utilize the acquired skills in the workforce<br />
and to achieve career and vocational training and job<br />
placement success.<br />
GED <strong>Center</strong><br />
<strong>Miami</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> <strong>Educational</strong> <strong>Center</strong> is home to one of the<br />
three approved GED Testing <strong>Center</strong>s in <strong>Miami</strong>-<strong>Dade</strong><br />
County. The GED Tests provide adults with an<br />
opportunity to earn a high school diploma that will enable<br />
them to obtain jobs, professional advancement, enroll in<br />
