Dear Parents and Guardians,
Click It Don’t Risk It-Save Your Money and Your Life
From May 18 to May 31, local police will join with fellow law enforcement
officers nationwide to step up seat belt enforcement in support of the 2009 Click
It or Ticket national mobilization.
Look for police to be out on the streets, conducting seat belt enforcement across
Idaho and across the country-both day and night. This means that if you are
stopped by the police, and you aren’t wearing a seat belt-either as a driver or a
passenger, you are going to get a ticket.
Please reinforce to your children the fact that as a teenager you are more likely
to die or become disabled in a car crash than at any other time in your life.
However, wearing your seat belt is the single most effective thing you can do to
protect yourself in any crash.
So buckle up every trip, every time and make sure everyone in your vehicle does
the same. You will save money on a fine and possibly save your life and the life
of a friend too.
Plus, buckling a seat belt only takes about two seconds.
So remember; Click It Don’t Risk It!
MHS Class of 2009 – All-Night Graduation Party – June 5, 2009
To honor our graduating seniors, parents will be putting on the All-Night
Graduation Party at the University of Idaho’s Student Recreation Center.
We need everyone’s help to make this night a success for our graduates.
Below are ways that you can be involved in this special celebration.
Registration: Information packets have been mailed, and need to be
returned by May 15. If you have any questions, contact Julia McIlroy at
juliam@uidaho.edu or 882-2162.
Security & Chaperones: Safety is a top priority! Volunteers are needed
to help with the security/check-in and to chaperone. If you are interested,
please email hughmaxwell@gmail.com.
Decorations: Any and all parents are invited to help decorate the Student
Recreation Center on the morning of graduation, Friday, June 5, starting
between 9 and 10 am. All supplies will be on hand, and many hands
make light work! So join us for the fun part! If you want to help, please
email Patty Brandt at pattybrandt@msn.com or Ellen Potratz at
ellen_watermelon@hotmail.com.
Food: What’s a party without good food We are in need of specific
donations to complete the menu, as well as paper products. This is an easy
way to contribute to the party, simply donating items like paper towels or an
appetizer. Please contact Nancy Nelson at
nancy.nelson.moscow@gmail.com or 882-3760 for a list of specific
requests that are needed.
Donaldson at DonaldsJ@sd281.k12.id.us if you have any questions about
the party or volunteering.
Thanks for your support of the Class of 2009!
Spring often brings parties and alcohol drinking by our kids. The annual
“Kegger” is usually a camping trip in May on or around Memorial Day
weekend. This is an unsanctioned event that is not supported by MSD. It
is usually organized by members of the senior class who sell t-shirts and
tickets to raise money to buy the alcohol. This message is to let you know
that these weekend events include drinking by students of all ages, not just
the seniors!
We strongly believe the best way to discourage students from attending
the “Kegger” is for parents to be aware of the event, to discuss the
possible consequences of the party with their sons/daughters and to make
other plans for the weekend. These types of parties can lead to underage
drinking, drunken driving, drug use, fights, accidental overdoses and sexual
assaults.
Not only are there severe penalties and fines for underage drinking, even if
your child is there as the “designated driver,” he/she could still be charged
with “frequenting” or being present at or on premises where alcohol or
drugs are being used.
These punishments and fines pale in comparison to the consequences of a
serious accident. Only the active participation of parents can prevent
tragedies resulting from the “Kegger.” Please discuss these issues with
your children. We understand student excitement about the end of the
year and moving on to a new phase of life.
The June 5th all-night party (alcohol free) created and supported by the
parents of graduating seniors is a positive alternative to the “Kegger.” We
look forward to celebrating with all of our sons and daughters their accomplishments
in high school and their bright futures in a safe and sane way.
A Message of Concern from the Moscow High School
Parent Support Team (MHSPST)
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - The PST will hold a Teacher Appreciation
Luncheon on June 3rd. Volunteers are needed to provide toppings for a
potato bar (chili, cheese, sour cream, butter, chives, olives, etc.), chips &
cookies. If you are able to help out, please have items to the high school
office on or before 10:30 AM on June 3rd. Thanks in advance for helping
out.

The Moscow High School Bear Buddies program started in the fall of 2000 with the
involvement of MHS student Inga Shubert. Since then, every year, caring, MHS
young adults are matched with elementary school age students in the Moscow
School District. We currently have twenty-three Bear Buddies who meet weekly
with their mentees providing students with an opportunity to continue to develop
their gifts and talents with a person who is a friend and positive role model. Our first
year Bear Buddies this year are: Danielle Baker, Peggy Beyerlein, Marlee Brown,
Annie Cantrell, Carly Celebrezze, Erin Flannigan, Harper Hightower, Serena
Howard, Sidney Jacobson, Laura Kleffner, Maggie Mattinson, Liz Miller, Bryn
Ohlgren, Kjerstin Schwendiman, Nikki Tribble and Jillian Whiteman. Our
second year Bear Buddies are: Jerica Haley, Caelyn Kelly-Fleisher, Monica Kerr,
Sarah Lanier, Sarah Lynn, Kylie Marks, and Caitlin Quaglietta. Bear Buddies can
become adult mentors and continue to participate in the program. Currently, we
have four Bear Buddies who have continued on as adult mentors: Carli Trail,
Jamie Lockie, Abbi Pfeifer, and Marianna Foreman.
The Bear Buddies program is part of our larger organization, the Moscow Mentor
Program, which includes college students and adult community members as mentors.
We are always in need of community members who are interested in making a
difference in a young person’s life to be part of our program. We currently have
eight boys on our waiting list. We are looking for caring adults, both men and
women who are able to make the commitment of one hour per week to mentor a child.
If you are interested in signing up to be a mentor or would simply like more information
regarding the Moscow Mentor/Bear Buddies Program, please contact Lynn
Weaver at 892-1149 or Donal Wilkinson at 892-1152 or e-mail us at
Moscow_mentors@sd281.k12.id.us. We need you!!
I would like to congratulate all BPA members who participated in the state competition
March 12-14, as well as all of those who placed in their events! This year, we had six
US Government classes have been holding Mock Legislature all month.
All the students have enjoyed the debate and many are committee and party
chairman. Others have worked hard to write committee bills and to maneuver
legislation through the sessions in the hope of getting some of the bills to
the Mock Governor. All 3 legislatures elected leadership who have worked
tirelessly every day to run the sessions using Robert’s Rules, patience and
efficiency. These jobs have loads of paperwork and stress but they have all
performed with flying colors. Please congratulate the following students for
