I must congratulate Miss Ferreira on her lovely assembly last
Monday at which she launched “Sparkles” to the girls. I am sure
that the parents that attended the assembly will agree that we really
got going with a „bang‟ and that the girls left the assembly with a
clear understanding of how this is going to progress and what they
need to work towards in earning a „gem token‟. The first groups of
girls were treated to an ice cream on Thursday morning in
recognition of their classes receiving the most gem tokens in the
short time from Monday to Thursday. Well done to the Grade 5 H
class and the Grade 3V class on this achievement!
For our parents who are not sure of what Sparkles represents, it is:
Splash:
S- Sincerity
P – Perseverance
A – Assertiveness
R – Respect
K – Kindness
L – Leadership
E – Excellence
S – Service
The girls are also terribly excited about our forthcoming production
of “Splash”. Please be reminded that the first bookings open on
Monday, 14 th March from 07:15 to 08:00 in the Library. The cost
per ticket will be R50 per seat. The show will be staged as follows:
Thursday: 17 th March 14:30 (We shall be inviting surrounding
schools and there will be no charge for this performance)
Tuesday: 22 nd March at 19:00
Wednesday: 23 rd March at 19:00

All performances will take place in the Lange Hall.
For parents who have not received the practise
schedule which formed part of the last connection,
please collect a copy from the Junior School
reception.
I would like to thank the class mums for their
assistance in the preparation of the costumes that
the girls require for the production. I shall be
levying a small charge to the account of each of our
girls to subsidize the cost of the costumes. This will
be as follows:
On Tuesday after half term, I sent an e mail to all
parents informing you of the termination of employ
of Mrs Oosthuizen, Head of Junior School sport. I
have been so impressed by the present Sport
Department in not hesitating to accept the
additional responsibilities and teaching load due to
Mrs Oosthuizen‟s departure. I do request that
parents of the A and B swimming teams peruse the
website to acquaint themselves with the updated
swimming lists that have been posted on the
website.
As per the Council‟s request, we shall be looking at
the restructuring of the Sports Department and will
be communicating this to the parent body as soon
as it is finalized.
Open Day: 3 rd March
I do hope you are able to join your daughter in her
classroom for Open Day on Thursday, 3 rd March.
All the classrooms will be open to parents except
the Grade 5 Topaz group who will be undergoing
their study skills course during this time. The Senior
Choir will be singing at 10:30 on the bricks and tea
will be served from 10:00 to 11:00. I do hope that
you are able to join us.
Shrove Tuesday:
My assembly message to the girls on Monday
morning will be around Shrove Tuesday. As
Tuesday, 8 th March is Shrove Tuesday, the PTA has
arranged for the girls to purchase pancakes. The
pancakes can be purchased by the girls by means
of tickets. Register class teachers will be given
tickets to sell to the girls, at R5 each, as from
Friday, 4 th March. Please allow your daughter to
bring her money to school to purchase a ticket
which will then entitle her to a pancake at tea time
on Tuesday, 8 th March.
Chatterbox: 11 th March
Mrs Hopkins has auditioned the girls interested in
competing in the termly Chatterbox competition
which takes place at Auckland Park Preparatory
School on Thursday, 11 th March. I congratulate
the following girls on being selected to participate.
Grade 4: Alexandra Levor van Niekerk and Ranyah
Patel
Grade 5: Jamielee Clogg and Marilena Boutselis
Grade 6: Paula Duggan and Isabella Jankowitz
We wish these girls all the very best!
Grade 7 Visit to the Senior School: 11 th March
I thank the parents of the Grade 7 girls who
attended the „Information Evening‟ on
Thursday,17 th February. I was so impressed by the
Senior school girls who contributed towards the
evening. Most of these girls attended the Junior
school and for me it was lovely to see how
confidently they spoke and truly epitomised the
ethos of Kingsmead. All our Grade 7 girls will be
spending the morning at the Senior school on
Friday, 11 th March. They will go across to the
Senior school at about 9:30 and return to the
Junior School at 13:00. The staff and girls of the
Senior school have a wonderful programme
planned for our girls which they should thoroughly
enjoy. I also remind the Grade 7 parents that the
closing date for the Kingsmead Scholarship
examination is the 11 th March with the actual
examination to be written on Tuesday, 15 th March.
Footloose Friday: 18 th March
We have decided to have a “Footloose Friday” on

18 th March. The girls may wear a pair of shoes to school which they wish to donate to a charity. They may
then go barefoot for the rest of the day. The teachers will also be part of this charity drive, I am sure that
this is going to be great fun for all.
Swimming Clinic: 5 th March
In order to build team spirit, improve turns and dives and for general fitness the swimming captains have
arranged a swimming clinic at school on Saturday, 5 th March which is to run from 9:00 to 12:00. Please see
the programme for this clinic which forms part of this connection. I have spoken to the girls and asked all
the A and B team swimmers to make every effort to attend.
I do hope you enjoyed the half term break with your daughter. The remainder of the term is going to be
very exciting for the girls. I look forward to seeing our parents at Open Day on Thursday and at our
concert later in the term.
Yours sincerely
Miss SA MacEwan.
Footless Friday
Did you know that there are 7 million children across the country who
do not own a pair of school shoes
As Kingsmead we plan to make a difference in the world so we are happy to
introduce FOOTLESS FRIDAY. On Friday, the 18th March, all the girls are
encouraged to wear a pair of shoes to school that can be donated to charity.
It is easy, they get to school, donate their shoes and spend the rest of the
day barefoot (and no teachers can moan at them to put their shoes on) A treat
for the girls and a gift to the many children who will receive the shoes.
Parents are more than welcome to donate a pair as well.
The world needs dreamers and the world needs doers. But above all, the world
needs dreamers who do. ~Sarah Ban Breathnach
