Parents…
• Do not park in a place which could
endanger your child or other children.
• Direct your children to get in and out of the car
on the kerb side.
• Set a good example - use school crossings
with your children. This will help your child do
the right thing when you are not there.
• Observe school zone speed limits.

Road Safety tips for parents to
help keep their children safe
when travelling on or near roads

Walking to school… Riding to school… Going in the car…
• Walk on the footpath.
• Always stop and look in driveways for cars
coming in and out.
• If there is no footpath and you have to walk on
the road, walk as close to the edge of the road
as possible and walk in single file.
• When crossing the road always STOP • LOOK •
LISTEN • THINK to make sure it is safe
before crossing.
• Always use school crossings or pedestrian
crossings and wait for traffic to stop
before crossing.
• At crossings always obey the directions of the
lollypop person.
Remember to
STOP•LOOK•LISTEN•THINK
• Always do a safety check on your bike - brakes
- chain - tyres - lights - reflectors - bell.
• Always wear a helmet.
• Be aware of driveways STOP • LOOK • LISTEN •
THINK for cars coming in and out.
• Young children should not ride on the road. It is
much safer to ride on bicycle paths, footpaths or
grass verges.
• Older children who ride on the road should
ride as near as possible to the left hand side
of the road.
• When crossing the road always STOP • LOOK •
LISTEN • THINK to make sure it is safe
before crossing.
• Always walk your bike across school crossings
and pedestrian crossings.
• Only one person per bike unless it is designed to
carry more.
• In wet weather always wear bright clothing to
make it easier for cars to see you.
• Always wear a seatbelt.
• Never put any part of your body out of the
car window.
• Get out of or into the car on the safe side
(kerb side).
• Identify and talk about a safe place to be dropped
off and picked up.
Going by bus…
• Never put any part of your body out of the
bus window.
• Always remain seated until your stop is reached.
• Wait until the bus has stopped before getting off.
• Never cross the road behind or in front of a bus.
• Wait until the bus has gone then STOP • LOOK •
LISTEN • THINK before crossing.
