endanger your child or other children.<br />

• Direct your children to get in and out <strong>of</strong> the car<br />

on the kerb side.<br />

• Set a good example - use school crossings<br />

with your children. This will help your child do<br />

the right thing when you are not there.<br />

<strong>Road</strong> <strong>Safety</strong> tips for parents to<br />

help keep their children safe<br />

when travelling on or near roads


Walking to school… Riding to school… Going in the car…<br />

• Walk on the footpath.<br />

• Always stop and look in driveways for cars<br />

coming in and out.<br />

• If there is no footpath and you have to walk on<br />

the road, walk as close to the edge <strong>of</strong> the road<br />

as possible and walk in single file.<br />

• When crossing the road always STOP • LOOK •<br />

LISTEN • THINK to make sure it is safe<br />

before crossing.<br />

• Always use school crossings or pedestrian<br />

crossings and wait for traffic to stop<br />

before crossing.<br />

• At crossings always obey the directions <strong>of</strong> the<br />

lollypop person.<br />

Remember to<br />

STOP•LOOK•LISTEN•THINK<br />

• Always do a safety check on your bike - brakes<br />

- chain - tyres - lights - reflectors - bell.<br />

• Always wear a helmet.<br />

• Be aware <strong>of</strong> driveways STOP • LOOK • LISTEN •<br />

THINK for cars coming in and out.<br />

• Young children should not ride on the road. It is<br />

much safer to ride on bicycle paths, footpaths or<br />

grass verges.<br />

• Older children who ride on the road should<br />

ride as near as possible to the left hand side<br />

<strong>of</strong> the road.<br />

• When crossing the road always STOP • LOOK •<br />

LISTEN • THINK to make sure it is safe<br />

before crossing.<br />

• Always walk your bike across school crossings<br />

and pedestrian crossings.<br />

• Only one person per bike unless it is designed to<br />

carry more.<br />

• In wet weather always wear bright clothing to<br />

make it easier for cars to see you.<br />

• Always wear a seatbelt.<br />

• Never put any part <strong>of</strong> your body out <strong>of</strong> the<br />

car window.<br />

• Get out <strong>of</strong> or into the car on the safe side<br />

(kerb side).<br />

• Identify and talk about a safe place to be dropped<br />

<strong>of</strong>f and picked up.<br />

Going by bus…<br />

• Never put any part <strong>of</strong> your body out <strong>of</strong> the<br />

bus window.<br />

• Always remain seated until your stop is reached.<br />

• Wait until the bus has stopped before getting <strong>of</strong>f.<br />

• Never cross the road behind or in front <strong>of</strong> a bus.<br />

• Wait until the bus has gone then STOP • LOOK •<br />

LISTEN • THINK before crossing.
