• September 5: “Stuck in the Middle: Are They a Kid
or a Young Adult”
High school youth are teetering on the edge of childhood and
adulthood. They begin to look like adults, think like adults and
prepare themselves for the independence and responsibility that
adulthood brings. Many times these changes lead them to believe
they no longer need (or want!) us as a parent. Yet, at times,
they show signs of still being a child who does need and want a
parent. Learn how to effectively parent your high schooler.
• September 12: “Door Openers vs. Door Slammers”
Do you feel it is close to impossible to have a conversation with
your teenager They are busy with school, work, friends, and
extracurricular activities. Sometimes they may send you the
message they don’t want to. Worse yet, we may also be slamming
the door shut to conversations with our child and not even
know it! Learn how to create those “door opener” opportunities
to meaningful and engaging conversations with your teenager.
• September 19: “You Aren’t Dating Until You Are Thirty!”
When your child shows an interest in dating, your first thought
as a parent is, “You aren’t dating until you are thirty!” Age and
maturity are important factors for determining when your child
can start dating, and serious thought needs to be given about
what your expectations are when it comes to dating. Learn tips
on how to set and express expectations about dating with your
child and ease the anxiety that comes with it for both of you.
Digital Footprint in Today’s Connected Culture
Wednesday, September 26, 6:30pm
Presented by: Ryan Sothan, Consumer Outreach Coordinator, NE Dept. of Justice
If we asked today’s teens to describe their “digital lives,” chances
are they would have trouble making clear-cut distinctions between
their online and offline worlds. They can communicate,
collaborate, express themselves, and find support for their interests.
On the downside, the ease of online disclosure places teens’
reputations at risk. A funny picture, a certain post—can resurface
CHILDREN, YOUTH & FAMILIES
MUSIC MINISTRY
Let every instrument be tuned for praise.
Let all rejoice who have a voice to raise, and may God give us faith to sing always! ALLELUIA!
First-Plymouth is a singing church. Our worship services provide
us all opportunities to raise our voices together as a congregation,
celebrating God in song. Our communal music ministry
is guided by our choral and instrumental ensembles, and there
is a comfortable place for everyone of most any age or ability
to participate. To register for a choir, please contact Rebecca
Shane, rebecca@firstplymouth.org
Our goal is straightforward: our ministry is to create lifechanging
relationships with God, self and others. We do so in
partnership with parents, believing that when we combine the
influence of the family with the influence of the church, the
result is more powerful and effective than is either influence
on its own.
From toddlers to teens, we share common monthly themes
and offer age-appropriate, community-building experiences that
help us live our best lives now. Way Cool Sunday School takes
place at 9:00 and 10:30am, uses the church and its neighborhood
as its “classroom”, and employs an experiential learning model
that engages both learners and leaders. (See p. 15 for related
programs on Wednesday evenings.)
Way Cool Worship
Every Sunday and Wednesday, children and youth participate
in Way Cool Worship, much of which they plan and lead under
the guidance of our Minister to Children, Youth and Families.
On “Second Sunday” mornings every month at 9:00am, children
and youth join adults in the sanctuary, again as co-creators of
the liturgy. This is also when you’ll hear our children’s choirs
and youth orchestra minister in music.
Special Events and Opportunities for Service
Throughout the year we offer children, youth and families
and others the opportunity to put hands and feet in their faith
through mission trips, retreats, and service to local not-for-profits
like the Food Bank of Lincoln, Center for People In Need,
Milder Manor, and Matt Talbot Kitchen, to name a few. We also
bring in leading experts in the fields of child-rearing and family
dynamics. Check the church’s website regularly for details.
Come Grow With Us!
We welcome and encourage your involvement in the spiritual
development of children and youth. In fact, your own spirit will
soar as you tend to their souls. We encourage not only teachers,
but artists and artisans, mentors and activists, parents and
non-parents and, well, you to to make a difference in the lives
of those we serve. No experience necessary, excellent training
provided, new friends assured!
How’s Family Life Treating You
Are your kids in crisis Are you fed up with family Or do you
simply want to add more spiritual practices to your home life
your own spiritual resources are exhausted, spiritual counseling
is available for the children, youth, parents, guardians, grandparents
