GRADUATE EMPLOYMENT REPORT
INTRODUCTION
The Office of Career and Counseling Services at Youngstown State University is
pleased to share the results of this Graduate Employment Report. This report is the
culmination of a year-long data collection and analysis process undertaken by our office
to provide the University with a more comprehensive understanding of decisions
regarding employment and continuing education made by Youngstown State University
students who completed their degrees during the 2010-2011 academic year. In addition
to this report, similar reports have been completed for the 2009-2010, 2008-2009, 2007-
2008, 2006-2007, 2005-2006, 2004-2005, and 2003-2004 academic years.
The information presented in this report will serve as an important resource for the
university community, providing readers with current and relevant career related
information. This report will also provide current students an understanding of
employment trends and provide them with information regarding the employment
success of individuals who graduated before them.
If there are any questions regarding this report, or to obtain additional information the
database may provide, please do not hesitate to contact our office at (330) 941-3299 or
via email at slgeorge01@ysu.edu.
THE GRADUATE EMPLOYMENT REPORT
PURPOSE
The purpose of the Graduate Employment Report is to provide comprehensive data and timely,
useful information to the university community regarding decisions made by YSU graduates
concerning continuing education and employment after graduation.
PROCEDURE/METHODOLOGY
The primary source of information for this report was a questionnaire (See Page 50) that was
mailed to each graduate who completed a degree during the 2010 – 2011 academic year, and
was also used when contacting the graduates by telephone. Two mailings were sent to each of
the graduates, one mailing of the questionnaire and one reminder post card with a link to the
online questionnaire was sent to those graduates who had not responded to the first mailing.
Graduates were also given the opportunity to complete the questionnaire via a survey format
called “Survey Monkey”, which captured 96 graduate surveys. In August 2011, a four-week
telephone campaign was completed in an effort to contact the Fall 2010 graduating class who
had not responded to either of the mailings. In January – February 2012, a six-week phone
campaign was completed in an effort to contact the Spring 2011 graduates who had not
responded to either of the mailings. Additionally, in April 2012, a two-week telephone campaign
was conducted in an effort to contact the Summer 2011 graduates who had not responded to
either mailing.
COVERAGE
The graduating class profiled in this report includes individuals who received degrees in
December 2010, May 2011, and August 2011. The contents of this report were derived entirely
from the 999 completed questionnaires, and this report provides a descriptive summary of that
information.
REPORTING OF RESULTS
The results for the Class of 2010 – 2011 have been presented in two sections in this report.
The first section includes data and results for the graduates of the six undergraduate colleges,
and the second section includes data and results for graduates of the School of Graduate
Studies.
ACKNOWLEGEMENTS
This report represents the efforts of the staff in the Office of Career & Counseling Services who
developed this report. Our sincere appreciation is extended to everyone who contributed to the
development of this report. Special acknowledgement is extended to Susan George,
Administrative Assistant in the Career Services office, who spearheaded the preparation and
development of this report, as well as Marie Meeks, Graduate Assistant for Career Services,
who assisted with the phone campaign and analyzing the data for graphing purposes.
2

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY OF SURVEY RESULTS
Appearing below are the major results from the survey of the Class of 2010 – 2011. This is the
sixth such survey of graduating classes that this office has conducted. In the five reports
prepared prior to this one, data for the undergraduate colleges and the School of Graduate
Studies was combined into one database. As noted previously, in undertaking the preparation
of this report for the Class of 2010 – 2011, two separate databases were developed: one
containing data from graduates of the six undergraduate colleges, and the second database
containing data for graduates of the School of Graduate Studies. This report contains two
sections: the first profiling the data for the graduates from the six undergraduate colleges, and
the second section presenting the findings for graduates of the School of Graduate Studies.
The findings for undergraduates, as has been done in prior reports, are presented in this report
for each of the individual colleges. The results of this year’s report are also presented with
respect to gender, for both the undergraduates as well as for the School of Graduate Studies.
RESPONSE RATE: The response rate for the undergraduate colleges was 49.0%, and for the
School of Graduate Studies the response rate was 47.0%. The response rate for the individual
undergraduate colleges ranged from a high of 55.1% for the Beeghly College of Education to a
low of 46.8% for the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.
Completed survey forms were received from 999 of the 2056 graduates who received degrees
in December 2010, May 2011, and August 2011 for a response rate of 48.59% for the entire
graduating class. The 48.59% response rate for the Class of 2010 – 2011represents a lower
response rate than the Class of 2009 – 2010:
• 59.0% response rate for the Class of 2009 – 2010
• 47.3% response rate for the Class of 2008 – 2009
• 39.0% response rate for the Class of 2007 – 2008
• 54.0% response rate for the Class of 2006 – 2007
• 49.3% response rate for the Class of 2005 – 2006
The lower response rate is due in part to the lower number of completes obtained through
Survey Monkey because of difficulties within the email system. Over 100 December 2010
graduates were sent an email requesting completion of the survey through Survey Monkey and
all of these emails came back as undeliverable because the graduate’s email inbox was “over
quota”. If we had gotten an equivalent number of Survey Monkey completes as the December
2009 graduating class, the completion rate would have been approximately 3.5% higher.
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Of those who responded to the survey, a total of 52% of the
undergraduates for the Class of 2010 – 2011 and 68% from the School of Graduate Studies
graduates reported being employed full-time. A total of 31% of the undergraduates and 21% of
the respondents from the School of Graduate Studies reported being employed part-time. A
total of 18% of the undergraduate respondents and 11% of the School of Graduate Studies
respondents reported not being employed.
3

EMPLOYMENT STATUS AND GENDER: The results regarding employment status for the
Class of 2010 – 2011 with respect to gender reveal the following: of the undergraduate
respondents, 51% of female respondents and 53% of the male respondents reported being
employed full-time while 64% of the female and 77% of male respondents from the School of
Graduate Studies reported being employed full-time.
EMPLOYED PARTTIME: A total of 33% of female undergraduate respondents and 27% of
male undergraduate respondents reported that they were employed part-time, while 26% of the
female respondents and 13% of the male respondents from the School of Graduate Studies
reported being employed part-time.
NOT EMPLOYED: A total of 15% of female undergraduate respondents and 20% of the male
undergraduate respondents reported not being employed, while 11% of the female respondents
and 11% of male respondents from the School of Graduate Studies reported not being
employed.
GEOGRAPHIC MOBILITY: A total of 81% of the undergraduate respondents who reported
being employed full-time did not relocate after graduation, while 84% of the respondents from
the School of Graduate Studies who reported being employed full-time did not relocate after
graduation. A total of 12% of the undergraduate respondents employed full-time reported
relocating 50 or more miles within Ohio after graduation, while 10% of the respondents from the
School of Graduate Studies who reported being employed full-time indicated that they had
relocated 50 or more miles within Ohio. With respect to relocating out-of-state, 8% of the
undergraduate respondents and 6% of the respondents from the School of Graduate Studies
who reported being employed full-time had relocated outside Ohio.
DISTRIBUTION OF SALARIES OF UNDERGRADUATES EMPLOYED FULLTIME:
The distribution of annual salaries for employed graduates was:
• 13.8% reported annual salaries of over $50,000
• 15.2% reported salaries of $40,000 - $49,000
• 36.5% reported salaries of $25,000 - $39,999
• 19.2% reported salaries of less than $25,000
• 15.0% of the respondents employed full-time did not provide salary information
WITH RESPECT TO GENDER: The most significant difference in the results, from the
previous year, regarding annual salaries occurred in the top ranges. Twenty-four percent (24%)
of male respondents reported annual salaries greater than $50,000 as compared to 9% of
female respondents. This was a significant increase across the board from the last academic
year where 9% of male respondents and 2.6% of female respondents reported annual salaries
greater than $50,000. A total of 16% of male respondents reported annual salaries of $40,000 -
$49,999 compared to 15% of female respondents. A total of 36% of male respondents reported
annual salaries of $25,000 - $39,999 compared to 37% for female respondents. Also, 25% of
female graduates reported annual salaries of less than $25,000 as compared to 13% of male
respondents. The number of undergraduate respondents who did not include information
regarding annual salaries was: 15% of males and 15% of females.
4

DISTRIBUTION OF SCHOOL OF GRADUATE STUDIES RESPONDENTS EMPLOYED
FULLTIME: The distribution of salaries for respondents of the School of Graduate Studies
was:
• 36.7% reported annual salaries of over $50,000 annually
• 22.5% reported salaries of $40,000 - $49,999
• 30% reported annual salaries of $25,000 - $39,999
• 2.5% reported annual salaries of less than $25,000
• 8.3% of the respondents employed full-time did not provide salary information.
WITH RESPECT TO GENDER: The results regarding annual salaries of graduates
employed full-time, when looked at from a gender perspective, tended to find male respondents
at the higher end of the salary scale and for females at the lower-middle ranges. A total of 58%
of male respondents and 25% of female respondents reported salaries greater than $50,000
annually; 11.6% of male respondents and 29% of female respondents reported annual salaries
of $40,000 - $49,999; 20.9% of male respondents and 35% of female respondents reported
annual salaries of $25,000 - $39,999; only 2% of male respondents and 3% of female
respondents reported salaries of less than $25,000; and 7% of male respondents and 9% of
female respondents employed full-time did not include salary information.
GRADUATES PURSUING ADDITIONAL EDUCATION: A total of 181 undergraduate
respondents, representing 22% of the undergraduates reported that they were pursuing
additional education on a full-time basis. Fifty-eight percent (58%) of these individuals reported
that they were employed either on a full-time or part-time basis while continuing their education
full-time. A total of 57 individuals, representing 7% of the undergraduate respondents, indicated
they were pursuing additional education on a part-time basis. Individuals continuing their
education, either full or part-time, were enrolled at approximately 67 different academic
institutions.
A total of 15 respondents from the School of Graduate Studies indicated that they were
continuing their education on a full-time basis. Of these 15 graduates, 11 were working either
full-time or part-time. Also, a total of 12 respondents indicated they were pursuing additional
education on a part-time basis while being employed either full or part-time. Individuals
continuing their education, either full or part-time, were enrolled at approximately 12 different
academic institutions.
