Angel Food Ministries Christ Lutheran Church, 330 Church Street, Amston just finished their second distribution of food through Angel Food Ministries on Saturday, May 30, 2009. Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit, nondenominational organization dedicated to providing grocery relief and financial support to communities throughout the United States. The program began in 1994 with 34 families in Monroe, GA and has grown to serve hundreds of thousands of families every month across 35 states. There are no qualifications, minimums, income restrictions or applications. Everyone is encouraged to participate. Orders and distribution are handled by church host sites. Orders are collected by the host sites during the first part of each month. These orders are then distributed by the end of that month. Instrument Zoo at Christ Lutheran Early Childhood Center Rosemary Metcalf from the Hartford Symphony Orchestra brought the Instrument Zoo to CLECC in Amston on 5/14/09. The 3 and 4 year old students at Christ Lutheran Early Childhood Center were introduced to the different families of instruments; woodwind, brass, string and percussion. After having a brief demonstration they were all invited to try each and every one of the instruments from maracas to a cello. Meaghan Malone mustered up enough breath to get a nice, big sound out of this euphonium. Pastor Jonathan Liebich helps distribute an Angel Food Ministries order to Todd Charland. Fred Shapiro Reverend Dan Smith was the last of the sacred minstrels who wrote, played, lived & preached Country-Blues Gospel. This Chicago Blues influenced gospel singer didn’t begin singing professionally until the early ‘60s, when he played behind folk legends Rev. Gary Davis and Pete Seeger. There are a number of Reverend Dan Smith tribute albums including: Lord’s House- A Tribute to Reverend Dan Smith by Darrell Mansfield.The Festival of Gospel Music (heard Sundays on WILI AM 14 @ 6PM) plays a number of his songs covered by others including: God’s Radar, I’ve Never Been to Seminary, Everyday will be Sunday. Sadly, his recordings are so rare, that I had never had the privilege of hearing him sing until last week. Through Amazon.com, a copy of his final recording “Just Keep Goin On” was available for a mere $35. Finally, I would own the rare release, recorded soon before he died. Before the final purchase with the click of “buy now,” I did one more search for Rev Dan’s music on a different search engine. I was directed to a link for Volume 5 of the The Gospel According to Austin (GAA). The GAA is a 5 volume project that celebrates “Roots Gospel” music of all types. The producer of the project, Greg Adkins, is on a mission to convince everyone that rural gospel music is foundational to all American music and Volume 5 of GAA project is clearly good evidence of that fact. This two disc compilation CD includes Country, Blues, R&B, Rock, Mariachi and even Comanche, genres of Gospel music. Some of the highlights include: Don Walser performing live with the Kronos Quartet, The Soul Stirrer’s (The quartet that featured both Sam Cooke and Otis Redding), Legendary Austin Bluesman WC Clark (a “Handy” Award winner), Dale Watson, and Ruthie Foster. As for Reverend Dan Smith, the 2nd disc in the set is a copy of Reverend Dan Smith’s “Just Keep Going On”. I immediately phoned Greg Adkins and ordered not just Volume 5, but volumes 1-4 as well. “Just Keep Going On” is one of the best examples of Chicago Blues Gospel I have ever heard. It reminds me of Muddy Waters, but with a little more harmonica and lots of preaching. There are a few sure ways to hear this amazing music.
