South Warren Middle School Cheerleading
Dear Cheerleader Candidate and Parent/guardian,! ! ! ! 4/22/11
! Thank you for showing interest in being a part of South Warren Middle
Cheerleading squad for the 2011-2012 school year. This is for any student that will be in
the 7 th or 8 th grade at South Warren Middle. Any cheerleader chosen for the SWMS
cheer squad will have a number of responsibilities including: cheerleading practices
(usually twice a week until 5pm), games (both football and basketball), cheerleading
competitions (will be discussed after tryouts with more information), fundraising to help
with competition and other fees throughout the year. All cheerleaders will also be a
representative of South Warren Middle and will be expected to hold up all school rules
and become a role model of behavior on and off the field.
! Included in this packet is a schedule for the two day clinic (May 25 th -May 26th);
they will need to be there for both days of clinic to learn everything needed for tryouts.
The tryouts will be on Friday May 27 th at 3:30. To participate in clinic or tryouts, all
participates will need to provide an updated physical form (current within last year). I
have attached a copy within the packet of this KHSAA physical examination form. Anyone
needing an updated physical can go to: Total Fitness Connection on Three Springs Road on
Saturday May 21 st from 8:30-10:30am for the low cost of $10.00. All girls must present
physical form on the first day of clinic, or will not be able to participate in clinic or
tryouts. NO Exceptions!!
! Being a part of South Warren Middle cheerleading can be a very fun and rewarding
experience but it also requires a great deal of commitment. All of the events that will be
upcoming will be discussed with enough time to make prior arrangements. In order for
this squad to excel this next school year, everyone will have to dedicate time, energy and
cost. There will be a meeting for all parents and members of the squad after tryouts to
discuss everything more in detail. Thank you for your interest in becoming a Spartan
Cheerleader and Good Luck!!!
Cheerleading Rules and Expectations
Attitude and Behavior:
Cheerleaders are expected to be a positive role model throughout school and the community.
Even if not in a uniform, all cheerleaders should be a representative of South Warren Middle. There
should always be respect between other teammates, coaches, sponsors, teachers and administrators.
Any signs of disrespect will not be tolerated.
Attendance:
Attendance is a vital part of being part of any team, you will be required to be at all practices,
games and any other requirement given by coaches and sponsors. Having good attendance at school is
also very important.
*Games: Cheerleaders should be at all ballgames 30 minutes before start of game, so they can
stretch, prep stunts , tumble, etc.
*Practice: there will be a time (usually 3pm) that practices will start—at that time all girls
should be completely dressed out (shorts, t-shirt, socks, appropriate shoes, and hair pulled back)
and ready to practice
*Practice: if the cheerleader is present at school they are expected to be at any game or practice
that day. If they miss school, they are not allowed to participate in either on that day. They must
be at school for at least half the day to participate also.
*Missing practice or game: If there is any reason you are to miss practice or game it must be
cleared with a coach or sponsor at least an hour before practice or game.
*Excused Absences: are illness, death in family, court appearance, etc. If you are missing for an
illness, a doctors excuse is needed at next practice.
*Each cheerleader is allowed 1 absence from a game, (pre approved) and 1 absence from a
practice (pre approved) for the entire school year. Anything more than that will result in
probation from squad.(will be discussed in more detail)
Dress and Appearance:
All cheerleaders are expected to dress appropriate at all practices, games and any other required
function.
*Practice: athletic shorts, t shirt, socks, tennis shoes hair pulled back and NO jewelry!!
*Games and Competitions: designated uniform, including socks, ribbons and hair in specific
way requested by coaches, no jewelry
*It is the responsibility of the cheerleader to keep up with all parts of their uniform and come to
all events dressed appropriately as requested by coaches. If dry cleaning or stain removal is
necessary, it is to be paid for by cheerleader or parent. All parts of uniform belonging to SWMS
should be returned to school at requested time completely in tact.
*All uniforms should only be used at school functions and should never be used for any other
reason.
Financial Responsibilities:
Cheerleaders and parents will be responsible for paying for the following throughout the year:
To try to keep as much out of pocket expenses as low as possible, involvement in all booster

fundraising will be mandatory. This will help you not to have to pay for all of the expenses yourself.
We need all parents and cheerleaders to help any way possible when it comes to fundraising and the
booster club.
• Camp wear, socks, shoes, ribbons, and any other parts of the uniform they will need. There
will also be fee for camp.
• Gymnastic Classes
• Competition Fees- will be discussed more at a later date.
• If anything else comes up during the season, the coaches will let the girls know with plenty
of notice
Academic and Eligibility:
Grades will be checked periodically by the school sponsor. If at any time a cheerleader is not
representing the school with appropriate grades, the sponsor will talk with the student. This will be
discussed in more detail in the first meeting. The grading criteria is that every cheerleader passes their
classes and does not have any behavioral issues at school.
Infractions that cause consequences:
• Late to games or practices
• Excessive talking during practice or games
• Disrespect inside or outside of school
• Incomplete uniform or practice attire
• Unsportsmanlike conduct
• Profanity
• Non-compliance with coaches
• In School Suspension, or other school discipline problems
*Consequences for these infractions will be discussed at first practice.
*All rules are subject to change to better the needs of the SWMS team. Everyone will be notified if any
changes arise.
I have read and fully understand the rules and expectations for being a SWMS cheerleader for the
2011-2012 school year. I agree to follow these guidelines to the best of my ability and dedicate myself
to this team. I understand and accept any consequences for any of the infractions listed.
