3.2 Number and composition <strong>of</strong> research personnel<br />
In 2008, 16.243 people (headcount) were employed <strong>in</strong> R&D activity <strong>in</strong> Slovenia,<br />
<strong>of</strong> which 40 % were women. Of these, 10.124 were researchers. While the bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
sector <strong>in</strong>vests more <strong>in</strong> R&D than government does, the comb<strong>in</strong>ed number <strong>of</strong><br />
researchers <strong>in</strong> public research <strong>in</strong>stitutions (<strong>in</strong> 2008) <strong>in</strong> full time-equivalent (FTE)<br />
positions (<strong>in</strong> HEI 1.795 and <strong>in</strong> research <strong>in</strong>stitutes 2.156) is higher than <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
(3.058). The bus<strong>in</strong>ess sector, on the other hand, employs a significantly larger<br />
number <strong>of</strong> technical personnel <strong>in</strong> R&D (2.519 <strong>in</strong> FTE compar<strong>in</strong>g to 683 <strong>in</strong> public<br />
research <strong>in</strong>stitutes and 216 <strong>in</strong> higher education sector), suggest<strong>in</strong>g that the activity<br />
is more ‘development’ focused.
