Letter from the President
Welcome to our first electronic newsletter and also to the 15th year of PIEA. PIEA has
only one goal: To make us better as photo educators. As someone who joined PIEA during
its inception, I know first hand this organization has helped me become not only a better
photography teacher, but also a better photographer.
As an organization, we are also driven to elevate the exposure received by photography
teachers, both locally and nationally. To meet this need, we are committed to staying on
the forefront of evolving trends in photography by holding our annual conference along
with the PMA 07 in Las Vegas. This offers a hands-on experience with cutting-edge photo
products, exhibits, and programs. We draw on this energy at our annual members meeting
and our conference, and I am hopeful you will join us this year. I am also very excited
because this year, for the first time, we are offering an all-day photo safari to Death Valley
Betty Lark Ross
for a mere $40 for members, plus meals. And by sponsoring our traveling student/teacher
contest with the largest amount of prizes ($111,000) we showcase some of the best photography in photo education across continents.
During the past 15 years, we have witnessed the transformation of photography and are constantly challenged to adjust our curriculum and our
understanding of new products, procedures, and techniques. We are challenged by the never-ending upgrading of software and our need to keep
up with these changes with passion and enthusiasm. During the conference sessions and via our listserv, we offer resources and ideas to help. As
we are witnessing an explosion of images on the Internet, with mind-boggling numbers of websites devoted to buying photo equipment, to sharing
photos, to contests, and so much more, we can help each other sift through and focus our priorities. This year’s committee members and Board
members have been busy working to increase our membership, update our website, and produce our scholarly e-journal, the PIEA Journal for
Photography Education, to reach new members and our existing members, and to keep us informed of scholarly pursuits in our field.
And to all who have recently joined, I would like to welcome you to PIEA. Our organization is only as strong as the participation of our members.
So I encourage you to reach out and get involved. Add your 2 cents into our the lively discussions on our listserv, enter work into our contests, join
us at our annual conference, make suggestions for ways in which PIEA can better serve members, and volunteer to get involved. Help us understand
how we can change to meet the needs of the ever-changing world of photography education.
I recently received an e-mail from an elementary school teacher searching for lesson plan ideas to use photography to teach her students about
different kinds of light. Photo education is happening with younger and younger students, as teachers learn to use the power of student-made
images to increase understanding and literacy.
In closing, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Ken Lassiter for his vision and never-ending work for supporting photo education. I also want
to thank Joe Ippolito for redesigning the PIEA website to provide our members with greater resources, and to Dan Overturf for leading the ejournal
committee. In addition, thanks to Mark Olson for planning our Death Valley excursion, and Mark Murray for his guidance during my year
as president. I look forward to seeing you in Las Vegas, and I will always be grateful for the opportunity to have served as PIEA president.
With appreciation,
Betty Lark Ross
PIEA president
Portfolio Review and Print Swap
PIEA continues the successful Portfolio Review session, which has
become a great way to see exciting images and hear the artist’s comments
on them, to grow in our own knowledge of photo imaging art
expressions and techniques, and get to know our fellow members in
a different way. This year, we will switch to an all-digital presentation
format, which will make it possible to see more members’ work, since
we won’t have any delays related to print arrangements. All members
attending the conference are invited to participate.
We’ll also formalize the Print Swap this year, which will occur immediately
after the Portfolio Review session. Those who participate
contribute enough copies of one photograph so each participant
will leave with identical portfolios, holding one print from each artist.
This is an opportunity to get original prints to show your students
a wide range of original photographic expressions, to hang in your
classrooms for inspiration, and to add to your own collection. You may
choose to participate as a contributor in one or both of the activities;
and everyone is invited to participate with questions and comments as
an audience member at the Portfolio Review.
How the Portfolio Review works
1. Send a CD holding a selection of 10 of your photo images to Prof.
Peter Glendinning, 113 Kresge Art Center, Michigan State University,
East Lansing, MI 48824-1119. Also include a working title for
the project, and your e-mail address and phone number so he may
contact you if necessary.
2. The contributions will be organized and ready for projection at the
session. All members whose works are postmarked by Feb. 21 will
be included in the session. Depending on the number of participants,
we will have more or less time for each member to describe
their artistic purposes and field questions from their peers. Your CD
of images will be returned at the conference.
How the Print Swap works
1. Send an e-mail to Prof. Glendinning, at glendinn@msu.edu, and
tell him you would like to participate in the print swap. (Please put
Eastern Daylight Savings Time.
3. Peter will reply to all who have made the commitment in a return
e-mail Feb. 22, telling them how many copies of one image they
should bring to the conference to participate in the print swap.
4. Prints may be whatever size the artist feels most appropriate for
their work, signed, and dated with copyright symbol, either on the
Photo Safari
Mark Olson, Community College of Southern Nevada, Las Vegas,
Nev., is hosting an all-day Photo Safari, March 7, to Death Valley
National Park. The first PIEA all-day Photo Safari will travel to Death
Valley National Park, about 2 hours west of Las Vegas. The bus
departs from the Flamingo Hilton Hotel at 7:00 a.m., and returns to
the Flamingo about 9:00 p.m.
Death Valley National Park is one of America’s premier National
Parks. According to the National Park Service website: “Death Valley
is a place of superlatives. ‘Hottest,’ ‘driest,’ ‘lowest’ are all words used
to describe the park. An amazing desert of streaming sand dunes,
snow-capped mountains, multicolored rock layers, water-fluted
canyons, and 3 million acres of stone wilderness. Home to plants and
animals unique to the harshest of deserts. A place of legend and a
place of trial.”
PIEA will spend the day traversing the park, taking in some of
the best-known and little-known sites. We’ll make numerous stops
throughout the park to photograph. Lunch will be Dutch treat in
Furnace Creek at one of the local restaurants. The day will end with
an amazing sunset at the ghost town of Rhyolite.
New frontiers for PIEA on the Internet
As a past director-at-large and past-president of PIEA – not to mention
my current involvement as vice president and webmaster – I have
had the good fortune to know many of our members both in the United
States and internationally. One of the most impressive things has been
the internationalization of PIEA, and the ability for educators worldwide
to share thoughts, exchange ideas, engage in debates, and such. So
what does any of this have to do with the Web? Well, everything!
As an international organization, under the umbrella of PMA, PIEA
members have an extraordinary opportunity – though, we often take
this opportunity for granted. The opportunity I speak of is the international
cross-pollinating of academic thought and the interchange of
experiences.
In current practice, by far the most rewarding PIEA benefit is attending
PMA international or regional conferences. I have had the
good fortune to participate and to contribute to PMA lectures on three
continents on numerous occasions. Consistently, members have
remarked the experience of knowing other members – face to face – is
an unparalleled experience. I agree!
We must ask, however, what about the rest of the year? What about
the rest of us? How about those who cannot attend the conferences?
What about those who want to reach out to other members, but
don’t see a clear path to building lasting relationships with our fellow
educators worldwide? Or what about all our members who feel the
dominance of a U.S.-based organization, and want to develop their
own regional PIEA flavor – one that addresses specific regional needs
in addition to our larger organization-wide goals?
This is where we must turn to the Internet to harness technology
to serve our needs. So, as members, I encourage you to be selfish.
That’s right, be selfish. Take advantage of your membership. Be selfish,
and utilize the online technologies we have to further a connection
with other members. Be selfish; advance your own international,
national, or regional goals. Use PIEA to develop a new community of
experts to support your needs, and the needs of your institution, state,
province, country, etc.
Fortunately, we now have numerous technologies in place to support
a wide range of interactive exchanges on our website. Did you know
we currently offer many forums that can be used to become more
involved with our fellow PIEA members?
At the upcoming PMA 07 convention in Las Vegas, I will present an
overview of these new technologies, but you can start using them right
away.
Some examples of online technologies currently available to members
are:
• The PIEA Discussion Forum can be used to carry on discussions
on any topic. Potential uses can be as simple as a basic
discussion board, through advanced discussion topics and
polling. This area requires an additional registration, so your
contributions will be controlled solely by you; however, you can
browse this area without registering.
• The PIEA Education Center can be used in the future to conduct
online classes only for PIEA members. If you are familiar
with Blackboard online learning software, this is similar in its
functionality. I use this software for all my online teaching at my
university.
• The PIEA Chatroom is an online chat room, where you can
have real-time discussions with other members. Furthermore,
for our international members, the chat room is available in
34 languages.
• The School Sites/Member Sites area is a list of members’
school websites, where you have the ability to self-subscribe
your school site to our list of websites. Also, members can add
their personal website to our site links at the bottom of this web
page.
• The Syllabi area is a list of members’ online course syllabi,
which now has an added functionality, where members can selfsubscribe
their online syllabus to our list of syllabi.
Beyond these member-specific interactive areas of our website,
we are working on new and expanded uses for the PIEA website.
Two examples are the all-new Photo-Imaging Education Association
Higher Education WebList located at www.pieapma.org/higher-ed/
and the PIEA Journal for Photography Education, which will provide a
forum for scholarly articles on pedagogy, contemporary and historical
processes and applications, and all other aspects of photographic
endeavors related to the field of photographic imaging education
(currently in the prototype stage).
As you can see, we are in constantly working to expand communications
and interconnected ways of relating beyond the traditional
conference attendance and PIEAtalk listserv.
If you haven’t been to our website in a while, why not visit http://
pieapma.org to see what’s new. To login to the member area, you will
need to login as: user name: member, password: piea06. Please
note we will periodically change the member ID and password. New
IDs and passwords will be sent via the PIEAtalk listserv or printed in
the newsletter.
I hope you will join me in continuing to help PIEA grow, for the benefit
of photo education and all PIEA members worldwide.
Famed Civil Rights photographer Charles Moore will present his
lecture, “Powerful Days,” at the annual PIEA “An Evening with an
Artist” program on Friday evening, March 9, at 7:00 p.m. Moore will
show photographs from his 50-year photography career, including
his historically important work from the Civil Rights Movement.
Moore’s Civil Rights photographs were shown to Congress and
credited by former U.S. Senator Jake Javits as “…helping to spur
passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.”
The program will be in the Renaissance Las Vegas Hotel
ballroom, a new hotel next to the Las Vegas Convention Center.
This special program is part of the PIEA track at the PMA07 in Las
Vegas, Nev.
During the late ’50s and early ’60s, Moore’s photographs were in
LIFE magazine almost every week and published in virtually every
magazine around the world. A freelancer represented by Black
Star, Moore covered the early efforts to desegregate Montgomery,
Ala., and the violent reaction to the 1962 enrollment of James
Meredith as the first black student at the University of Mississippi.
He photographed the Freedom March from Tennessee to
Mississippi and the march from Montgomery to Selma, Ala. He also
photographed the Ku Klux Klan in North Carolina. Moore’s camera
was at the 1963 voter registration campaign in Mississippi, where
three civil rights workers were jailed and then murdered, an event
that inspired the movie, “Mississippi Burning,” with Moore’s photos
featured in the opening scenes. Moore’s career also includes photographing
the civil war in Haiti, political violence in Venezuela, the
Vietnam War, special movie photography, and celebrity portraits.
Moore was born in 1931 in the small northwestern Alabama town
of Hackleburg. His father was a Baptist minister, and Moore often
accompanied his father when he preached at black churches. After
serving in the U.S. Marine Corps for 3 years, Moore attended
Brooks Institute of Photography, where he was awarded an
Honorary Master of Photography degree in 1992.
When the Civil Rights Movement began,
Moore was a staff photographer for the local
newspaper, The Montgomery Advertiser.
In 1958, he just happened to be the only
photographer present when two police officers
who did not recognize Reverend Martin
Luther King Jr. blocked King from entering the
courthouse. Moore followed King and the police
officers to the police station, making landmark
photographs along the way. The series of photographs
culminate in the iconic image of King
shoved against the booking desk as his wife
looks on in shock.
Moore has more than 100 magazine covers
to his credit. He has two books in print,
“Powerful Days,” first published in 1991 and
still in print, and “The Mother Lode,” a work on
the California Gold Rush country. His work is
in the collections of most museums, including
the International Center of Photography in
New York, N.Y.; the Smithsonian Institution
in Washington, D.C.; the Simon Wiesenthal
Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles, Calif.;
the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Ga.; the
Newseum in Arlington, Va.; and the George
Eastman House in Rochester, N.Y. In 1989,
the National Press Photographers Association
(NPPA) and the University of Missouri
presented Moore with the first Kodak Crystal
Eagle Award for Social Impact in Photojournalism
for his Civil Rights photographs.
As part of his lecture, Moore will show a
presentation of his Civil Rights work, accompanied
by the protest songs of the 1960s.
This extraordinary presentation should not
be missed. Many people today do not realize
the unimaginable events like those shown in
Moore’s photographs ever happened in our
country. The presentation is anticipated to be
very moving and emotional; it will demonstrate
clearly the power of photography to motivate
people to change society.
Kirkland’s Celebrity Photos at Hallmark
Museum
“FACE to FACE: Portraits from Fifty Years,” by Hollywood-based
photographer Douglas Kirkland, is the featured exhibition at the Hallmark
Museum of Contemporary Photography, Turner Falls, Mass.,
through March 18. Kirkland, often called the grandfather of celebrity
portraiture, is showing 50 prints selected from his half-century career.
Among the iconic images included in the exhibit will be portraits of
Angelina Jolie, Marilyn Monroe, John Lennon, Richard Burton and
Elizabeth Taylor, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslett, Audrey
Hepburn, Sophia Loren, Nicole Kidman, Paul Newman, and Naomi
Campbell; as well as dozens of other historic and contemporary
pictures of leading people from film, entertainment, and arts culture.
Kirkland has been the still photographer for more than 100 motion
picture films, has produced seven books of his photographs, and has
been published in a plethora of magazines and periodicals. He’s been
the recipient of numerous awards, and his photographs are included
in some of the world’s leading art collections. His work has been
exhibited by museums and galleries throughout the United States and
Europe.
More information about Kirkland can be found on his website at
www.douglaskirkland.com. More information about the Hallmark
Museum of Contemporary Photography can be obtained at
Brooks alumni have fine-art exhibition
Five alumni of Brooks Institute of Photography, Santa Barbara,
Calif., are displaying their fine-art photography at the school’s Cota
Street Campus & Gallery. The show is open to the public through
March 31.
PIEA President Betty Lark Ross announced PIEA is in the final
stages of launching its online journal for photography educators,
called PIEA Journal for Photography Education. The PIEA
Journal Committee, charged with creating and initiating the
online journal for PIEA, recently finalized the title and mission
statement.
The journal will be located on the PIEA website at http://journal
.pieapma.org/.
The mission statement reads as follows: “The PIEA Journal for
Photography Education is dedicated to serving the community
of photography educators worldwide in support of teaching and
research across curricula related to the teaching of photography.
The journal provides a forum for scholarly articles on pedagogy,
contemporary and historical processes and applications, and all
other aspects of photographic endeavors related to the field of
photographic imaging education.”
Featured will be more than 50 images from five recent Brooks graduates,
including Chris Buckpitt (2003 graduate), Gabriel Cano (2000
graduate), Adam Gerlach (2003 graduate), Kodiak Greenwood
(2004 graduate) and Serena Lee (2005 graduate).
According to Gerlach, who serves as assistant gallery director of the
Cota facility, the “5-by-5” show is a reference to the fact each individual
artist will present styles and visions unique to his or her craft – hence,
five artists with five entirely different perspectives. Gerlach, himself, is
a black-and-white photographer, specializing in hand-toning his work
to transform reality, and create strange and unfamiliar qualities in the
images. His work was profiled in a recent issue of Black and White
magazine.
Greenwood, a native of the Big Sur area in Northern California, has
twice earned awards in the Fujifilm photography competition, and
is represented in private galleries. His extensive photography of the
West Coast – both in color and black-and-white – has garnered critical
acclaim. In contrast to outdoor and landscape photography, Buckpitt
strives to capture the essence of people. Lee, already distinguished
in her field of portrait, wedding, and fine-art photography, finds her
passions lie in using antique and alternative processes and digital
imaging to mix the old world with the new. Cano, whose work range(s)
from portrait to landscape, also focuses on technique and processing.
His use of very long exposures, ranging from 5 seconds to 2 minutes,
results in an ethereal, poignant, quality to his images – “honoring what
is now lost,” as he explains.
The public is invited to visit the gallery on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 9
p.m., and on weekends from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. For more information,
call the Brooks Institute Cota Street Campus & Gallery at (805) 690-
4913. For more information, visit www.brooks.edu.
