Read how Chamroeun now walks with HOPE!

thanks to you...
we have been able to
change lives
like that of Chamroeun’s.
“
Without the Center of HOPE and Gloria Jean's I would have
died. I am so happy that I got well and can walk again.
~ Chamroeun
“
Twenty-one year old Chamroeun was working
as a late-night security guard at Gloria Jean’s
Coffee shop when an accident shattered his
dreams.
After being crushed by a swerving car,
the college student had a leg
amputation at another facility and was
given a 10% chance of survival.
But Chamroeun was brought to the
Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE,
where he received high-quality
treatment for a severe infection and
pelvic fracture free of charge.
Thanks to support like yours, Chamroeun
is now on the road to recovery and a new
way of life.
At his last follow-up appointment
Chamroeun was able to walk in on his
own, with a prosthetic and a smile.
Thanks to support like yours, Chamroeun is making
strides toward full recovery and a new way of life.

director’s message
Dear Friends,
Cambodia is changing very quickly, and the
hospital is certainly no exception to this. We
hope this report inspires you as you read
about some of the progress and stories that
have encouraged us over the past two years.
My wife and I are very grateful for the people
and circumstances that allowed us to move
to Phnom Penh to be a part of this work. We
would like to say “thank you” to the many who
have helped make the hospital what it is
today: to those who came before us to build
and strengthen the hospital since it opened in 1996, to the hundreds of international
volunteers and donors who support the hospital each year, to the team of professionals
who help manage it, and to the exceptional 480 Khmer staff who work tirelessly to provide
care to more than 500 people per day. Most of all, we thank God, who continues to move
powerfully and show his love to us all.
For many people, Cambodia remains a place of great suffering. But it is also a place of
great miracles.
Thank you for being a part of these miracles and thank you for your continued prayers and
support.
Sincerely,
Kevin O’Brien
CEO/Executive Director
The mission of the Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE is to provide further
education and clinical training for medial professionals while delivering free
24-hour high-quality medical care to the poor and disadvantaged of Cambodia.

Making A Global Impact
your support
helps open the door for our
global impact
Journal of the International
Association of Physicians
in AIDS Care
The New England
Journal of Medicine
Dr. Lim Kruy, SHCH Medical
Director, conducted a study
on an alternate way of
detecting and diagnosing
cervical cancer in
HIV-infected women using vinegar.
Her work was published in the Journal of the
International Association of Physicians in
AIDS Care, and the findings hold much
promise. Currently, cervical cancer is the
number one cause of cancer-related death
for women in Cambodia.
Dr. Sopheak Thai,
Head of Infectious
Disease Department
at the SHCH,
contributed to a
study published in The New
England Journal of Medicine on the
screening and diagnosing of
Tuberculosis in HIV patients.
The study made a persuasive case
for policy changes that could aid in
reducing the mortality rate of HIV
patients with tuberculosis.
In a resource-limited setting such as
Cambodia, most women live on less than $2
a day and lack access to skilled health care
providers who can administer pap smears.
Copies of published SHCH
research are available at :
www.sihosp.org/research
Thus, the study supports a real and viable
possibility for earlier detection among
women.
“
I feel my life is very difficult, but when
the SHCH Home Care Team visited
and told us they would help us to get
a house, I was so happy I cried.
~ Chhorvy
“
In 2010, Habitat for Humanity Cambodia
and the SHCH initiated a partnership to
provide secure housing to 80 patients with
HIV and their families.
shack on the outskirts of Phnom Penh.
During the six-month long rainy season,
they would sleep sitting up in makeshift
beds to stay above the flooding.
Through this new partnership Chhorvy and
her daughter, Socheata, received a new
home that will keep them safe and dry
during the coming rainy season.
Prior to this, the HIV+ single mother and
her daughter had been living in a small
Chhorvy, who was diagnosed with HIV 11
years ago, is one of 2,600 patients who
“
We are very happy that we can now
that helps our doctors provide a
“
~ Dr. Vannarith Chea,
SHCH Director of Radiology
The SHCH now has the first CT scan in the
country available to provide free CT scans
to disadvantaged Cambodians.
This new facility provides high-quality
diagnostic care to both paying and
non-paying patients.
Creating More Efficient Health Care
your partnership is an investment
that will
bring progress
for the future
Through funding from the Global Fund
and the Institute of Tropical Medicine, the
SHCH purchased three new computer
servers, facilitating a quicker and more
direct flow of information between the
hospital’s many departments.
Having an up-to-date network enables
SHCH staff to report information
throughout the hospital in real time,
putting it at the fingertips of other medical
staff when they need it.
This change has led to improved patient
care and increased efficiency as lab
results are available electronically and
medicines can be dispensed more
quickly and safely.
sustainability
HOPE worldwide operates a
total of seven medical centers in
Phnom Penh, six of which were launched in
2009 and 2010. The HOPE worldwide Medical
Centers (HMCs) generate funds that help support the
ongoing mission of the SHCH to serve as a training facility
for medical professionals while delivering 24-hour high-quality
care to the most disadvantaged Cambodians completely free of
charge.
The HMCs also aim to provide affordable, high-quality health care to all
Cambodians. Though many Cambodians can afford to pay a dollar or more
for some of their care, they often fall into poverty or wait too long to seek care
if they have to bear the entire cost. By utilizing a sliding scale at some of the
HMCs, HOPE worldwide is able to not only provide sustainable support to the
SHCH, but to serve more than a hundred additional patients each day.
It is HOPE worldwide’s goal that the operations of the HMCs will provide an
increasing amount of the annual SHCH budget. In addition to this, the HMCs help
to improve the medical infrastructure of the country and the general availability of
health services for the people of Cambodia.
heng’s
story:
Heng was in a
life-threatening moto
accident, fracturing his arm, leg and skull. He
was advised to be evacuated to Vietnam for
treatment, which would likely cost more than
$10,000 USD.
Heng, however, is employed at a local non-profit
that provides employment to disabled and disadvantaged
Cambodians, and neither he nor his
employer could afford such high costs.
Fortunately, his employer contacted the team at
the HOPE worldwide Medical Centers for help.
Three surgeries later, he was able to return
home to his family to rest and recover.
Not only was Heng able to stay close to his
family, the total cost of his treatment was just
$2,017.10.
This illustrates a great accomplishment in
fulfilling HOPE worldwide’s goal to bring safe,
high-quality, affordable medical care to all
Cambodians.
