Meet State St<strong>and</strong>ards with Garden <strong>Field</strong> <strong>Trip</strong>s<br />

Sustainability Tour<br />

Experience an adventure through the Garden while learning about a variety of environmental issues. Visit<br />

the Longleaf Pine ecosystem <strong>and</strong> learn how organisms depend on each other to survive. Become part of a<br />

food chain <strong>and</strong> experience what happens when pesticides are introduced. Compete in the Recycling Relay,<br />

<strong>and</strong> learn about ecological footprints <strong>and</strong> what can be done to reduce their size.<br />

Biology Tour<br />

After training to become an official Garden botanist, students learn about the Longleaf pine ecosystem by representing<br />

a variety of organisms that live there. They must work together to prevent extinction of these organisms. Classification<br />

of organisms will also be discussed <strong>and</strong> students will use a dichotomous key to classify four plants. Other topics include:<br />

flower anatomy, pollination, colony collapse disorder <strong>and</strong> carnivorous plants.<br />

Social Studies Tour<br />

Go to school during the 1800’s by becoming a student at the fully restored Oak Grove One Room<br />

Schoolhouse! Reenact a typical school day at the one room school house <strong>and</strong> do everything a student from<br />

the 1800’s would do. Participate in lessons about penmanship, adjectives, math, problem solving, spelling,<br />

<strong>and</strong> of course, recess!<br />

promotes knowledge <strong>and</strong> appreciation of the native plants <strong>and</strong> animals<br />

of the southeastern coastal plain<br />
