The 6-foot-3,227-pound right-hander tossed a twohitter, walked only one and struck out 10 as Churchill kept its WLAA-Lakes Division quest with a 6-2 win to knock Westland John Glenn out of a tie for first place. Churchill is now 11-10 overall and 5-3 in the Lakes, while Glenn falls to 13-13 and 5-3. Both teams are now one-game behind Salem (13-7, 6-2) with two divisional games left. Payzant, making his first divisional start, started out a little shaky, getting behind 2- Livonia Stevenson High grad Julie Ward (back row, second from women's rowing championship. Irish eyes smiling The Notre Dame University women's rowing team, helped by Livonia native Cailey Ryckman, garnered its sixth consecutive Big East Championship on April 27 by sweeping all six grand final races on Melton Kill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The Irish finished with 123 points followed by runner-up Louisville 005), Syracuse (92), Georgetown (85), Rutgers (67), Connecticut (64), Vlanova (44) and West Virginia (28). Ryckman, a freshman from Livonia Ladywood High who was a four-year swimmer, was a member of the victorious novice four boat crew, which captured a gold medal with a winning time of 8:11.5 in the 2-kilometer race. rower BY BRAD EMONS OBSERVER SPORTS WRITER A competitive club swimmer since the age of six, Julie Ward found herself searching for a new identity after lettering her freshman year as a walkon at Michigan State. She decided to switch gears, or make that oars when it came to the water. "I never rowed, but I still wanted to be part of a sport," Ward said. "When I swam I got a little burned out. 'State' really didn't have a good swim program and they were last in the Big Ten. "I just decided I didn't want to swim, but I left on good terms with the swim coach. I was recommended to the rowing coach and I decided try out." - Ward walked on again and eventually earned a scholarship on the MSU rowing team where she helped the Spartans to Big Ten title last weekend in Ann Arbor on the Second Varsity Four boat. Ward, a former All-Observer swimmer and team captain her senior year at Stevenson, joined teammates Catie Tyzo (West Bloomfield), Emily Huddleston (Dexter) and Katie Taylor (Poison, Mont.), along with coxswain Amanda Ruhno (DeWitt), to unseat top seed Wisconsin to win the 2-kilometer race in 7 minutes, 52 seconds. MSU, which ran away with team PREP BASEBALL her niche 0 after one inning. But Glenn could muster only two base runners the rest of the way as he improved to 4-1 on the year. "He's been with us all year," Churchill coach Ron Targosz said. "We knew he could pitch, but we've brought him along slowly so he'd get his confidence. We've been taking it slowly and not throwing him into the fire of divisional games, but he threw a shutout against North Farmington and threw a no-hitter against Essexville (Garber) in the Carleton-Airport Tournament. He's showing he's ready to pitch in the big games." Glenn's Andrew DeLuca , drew a lead-off walk and Jace Paciocco singled to start the game. DeLuca came around title tying Minnesota's record 150- point effort last season, is headed to the NCAA Regionals May 17-18 in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The ultimate goal is to obtain a berth in the NCAA Championships, May 31-June 1, in Sacramento, Calif. It was MSU's first Big Ten title since 2005. "We were the favorites," Ward said. "We had the target on our backs. Our coach said we were pretty much under pressure to win and we pretty much dominated." In 2005-06, Ward got her feet wet as a member of MSU's Top Novice Eight which placed third in the South/Central Regional. She also rowed in the four-seat of the First Novice Eight that placed fourth at the Big Tens with a time of 7:22.5. "I had to get used to it, I did not fall In love with it right away," Ward admitted. "I like it more than I used ' to. College swimming and rowing are one of the two toughest sports. Swimming is more resistance to weight training, while rowing is building up more bulk." MSU uses the Grand River both as its home course and practice site. "With rowing it's blisters and it's painful, whereas swimming is time consuming and demanding," Ward said. "It's different. I'd say rowing is more business-like, Our coach treats Please see MSU. For an opening act, Livonia Stevenson's Nick Anagnostou can't be labeled anything less than an instant hit. Just ask his coach, Scott Shaw, who wanted to cast the soccer player as a 400- meter runner, but quickly learned the junior would be an asset in the sprints. On Thursday, Stevenson, minus three key members, wrapped up the Lakes Division title in the Western Lakes Activities • • Association BOYS TRACK with a 75-60 win at Livonia Churchill in a battle of unbeatens. Anagnostou, a surprise 100 winner the previous Saturday at the Observerland Relays, ran 10.84 to claim first against Churchill and followed up Friday in the Stevenson Twilight Invitational with a school-record time of 10.54, runner-up to Bennie Fowler of Beverly Hills-Detroit Country Day, who clocked a blistering 10.4. Anagnostou broke the school record of 10.67 set by Nana Adomako in 2006. "He was in my weight (training) class and he (Anagnostou) talked to me about coming out," Shaw recalled. "I was realty looking for a 400 runner because we had plenty of sprinters. He wanted to stay in shape forsoccer. We needed him earlier in a meet to go in the 100 and he runs 11.1 his first time out. He's been dropping his time ever since. He's just been one heck of a find." Shaw also discovered his team can function without three key members, who missed the bus forThursday's meet at Churchill and were sent home. "I'm happy for the kids because everybody who thinks of us all the time talks about the White brothers (Mitchell, Myles and Austin), but we had other people who showed up and ran some great races," Shaw said. Senior Derek Buskey, for instance, swept the 200 (22.91) and 400 (50.6) and was a member of Stevenson's victorious 800 (1:32.2) and 1,600 (3:31.4) relay teams. The Spartans also went one-two-three in the 300 hurdles led by Dennis Swift's first-place time of 41.67. 'Dennis has been hurt all year and last week he comes back at Observerland and all he can do is the shuttle hurdles and then he comes back (Thursday against Churchill) and wins the 300 hurdles," Shaw said. "Overall that was big for us. And Shawn Howse came up huge with a second in the 1,600 (4:45.3) and a first in the 3,200 (10:09.1)." In the five-team Twilight Invitational, Novi-Detroit Catholic Central edged Stevenson for the title, 175.5-173.5. bemons@oe.homecomm.net | (734) 953-Z123 Amateur Cup Canton Celtic F.C. will square off against Ann Arbor F.C. in a first-round USASA National Amateur Cup men's soccer match beginning at 8 p.m. Sunday at Saline High School.
