The Simpson Family
Christina, a junior at Boston College, was the first from the Simpson family to attend The Steppingstone
Academy. One year later, younger sister Moriah, currently a sophomore at Hampton University, followed suit.
The girls recall their first summer session of the academic preparation component. “The work was challenging,
with lots of new material, and the pace was fast. But with the support of my parents and Steppingstone
advisors, I got through it,” recalls Christina. Moriah adds, “Yes, Steppingstone really prepared me for Boston
Latin School. The standards are so high there and I felt that with all the preparation I had over the 14 months,
I was ready to move forward with confidence.”
While Christina and Moriah went on to attend Boston Latin School, younger siblings Alexia and Andrew
both chose Beaver Country Day School. Initially, Tina, their mother, was uneasy about the prospect of an
independent school education for them. “Considering a school with tuition fees seemed out of my reach.
I just didn’t think it was financially possible for us, and I would have left it at that. But then Ms. Conrad from
Steppingstone went over the application process and urged us to consider it, and I’m so glad we took her advice!”
The Simpsons have taken advantage of the many resources available to them through Steppingstone, including
financial aid workshops, college application and essay writing classes, and college tours. The Simpson Scholars
attended Saturday Mentoring and Study Hall (SMASH), and Christina and Moriah had the same mentor, Allison
Foley, for four years. “Even though Allison lives in a different state now, we still communicate with her to this
day,” said Tina. “She makes every effort to be with us at major events in our lives, such as graduations.”
Christina describes education as “more than just being book smart. It’s being prepared to enter the world as
a professional and succeeding.” The four Simpson Scholars are well on their way.

Letter from the Founder
In 1990, John Simon and I launched
The Steppingstone Foundation. We
admitted 14 Scholars into the pilot class,
and John and I did just about everything:
we visited schools, taught classes, drove
the bus, and helped the Scholars apply to
independent schools. But there were some
things we couldn’t do all on our own,
and I would like to acknowledge a special
group of people, listed on this page, who
were among the many early supporters of
Steppingstone. What sets them apart is
that they have continued to give every
year, for the past 20 years. While I am
extremely appreciative of anyone who
has ever given anything to Steppingstone,
there is a special place in my heart for
those who have been with us literally
every step of the way.
You will notice that some of the people
on that list have the same last name as
I do. I am particularly grateful for the
support of my family, without whom there
would be no Steppingstone.
Family is at the foundation of
Steppingstone. When we admit Scholars
to The Steppingstone Academy, we don’t
just interview the prospective students;
we meet with their parents or guardians
as well. Even though it is the Scholars who
walk across the stage at MIT to receive
their Steppingstone diplomas every
August, they do so because of the
unending support they receive from their
families. This support takes many forms.
It’s the mother who leaves work early
so she can drive carpool for a group of
Scholars on a cold afternoon in February;
or the grandfather who serves as a human
alarm clock every weekday morning in
the summer so his grandchild won’t miss
the bus; or maybe the older sister who
constantly reminds her brother not to quit
the Academy because if he can make it,
it will change his life. Yes, family matters
at Steppingstone.
There is another family here at
Steppingstone, and the members of that
family are listed on the pages that follow
in this report. Just as the Scholars rely
on their families to achieve their goals,
we rely on you in so many ways. You
attend SMASH and help Scholars with
their homework; you organize and attend
fundraising events; you offer candid and
constructive advice; and you give so
generously of your resources. Any success
we have had is due to your support.

As Steppingstone marks its 20th year in 2010,
we can be proud of so many accomplishments:
more than 1,100 Scholars have graduated from
The Steppingstone Academy, and nearly 200
have graduated from college. We have affiliate
programs in Hartford and Philadelphia and have
launched the National Partnership for Educational
Access. The Steppingstone Foundation, started
by a schoolteacher and a young entrepreneur, has
more than delivered on its mission; it’s changed
the lives of countless Scholars and has served as
an example of what is possible.
While I am proud of all that Steppingstone
has accomplished so far, I am even more excited
about what lies ahead. Recently, we completed a
strategic plan and are now on a course to serve
more students in Boston, and to become a leader
in the field of college access and readiness. The
growth initiatives in the strategic plan build on the
success of The Steppingstone Academy in Boston,
Philadelphia, and Hartford.
In 2011, Steppingstone will launch a new
initiative called the College Success Academy, which
will provide after-school and summer programming
to students attending partner public schools in
Boston, with a goal of increasing the number of
students attending and graduating from four-year
colleges. Unlike The Steppingstone Academy, the
College Success Academy will not rely on placement
into independent and public exam schools. Therefore,
Steppingstone can help more kids get on and stay
on the path to college. We will start with two pilot
public schools in Boston next summer. If we succeed
as we plan to, we will add more schools and students.
The second area of growth that I am excited
to share with you is the National Partnership for
Educational Access, or NPEA. We launched NPEA
three years ago and had targeted about 30 other
programs we thought might be interested in sharing
best practices. We underestimated the interest by a
little! As I write, there are 169 member organizations,
collectively serving over 30,000 students around the
country. In addition to hosting an annual conference,
NPEA will convene members locally––beginning in
Boston––in order to develop opportunities for
collaboration. For example, NPEA will organize
college tours for students in participating programs
that don’t have the resources to sponsor tours themselves.
Finally, we will link the growing number of
NPEA-affiliated students with college admissions
officers eager to recruit them, while also giving these
students the opportunity to connect with other
students going to the same college.
I am very grateful for the support that you have
given Steppingstone. Without the generosity of those
listed on the following pages, there would be no
Steppingstone Academy and no NPEA. In the same
way, without your continued support, all our plans
for growth and the College Success Academy would
be just that—plans—rather than the opportunities
that you make possible.

Most children learn about Steppingstone from their teachers or parents. In the Bacare family, grandfather
Amin, who taught in Sudan for 40 years, made sure that his grandchildren completed Steppingstone’s application
process. He attended almost every meeting and workshop, since their parents’ work schedules often conflicted.
Along with the support of family, both parents acknowledge the role Steppingstone advisors played in their
children’s educational success. “The children’s advisors helped us every step of the way,” said Amal. Steppingstone
advisors helped them choose a school for Bassil, and in the end, The Park School proved to be the perfect fit. Muram
was set on attending Boston Latin School, so with that in mind, the team worked together to ensure that she kept
her grades up and scored well on the entrance exam.
Amal and Sidiek soon discovered that it was one thing to get into these schools, but to navigate them successfully
was yet another learning experience. Sidiek credits Steppingstone with helping them to understand the importance
of participating in extracurricular activities at school. Bassil has gotten involved in many activities at The Park School.
He plays sports, is a member of the rocket club, and discovered that he has an interest in community service. Over
the summer Bassil worked as a volunteer at ABCD Head Start and credits the job with helping him to become more
responsible and to look beyond himself.
Younger sister Muram, who was a member of Steppingstone’s Leadership Council, just completed Steppingstone’s
academic component and graduated from the Academy in August. She is currently attending Boston Latin School.
“I’m very proud of my accomplishment,” she said. “It was hard but fun at the same time. I made so many friends and
learned so much.”
With the Baccare family, Steppingstone is clearly a family affair. Amin reflects on his grandchildren’s journey
and notes, “Their success is my joy, and I want only the best for them. I tell Bassil and Muram: work hard, don’t
settle for less, and never give up.”

About our Programs

Since 1990, The Steppingstone Foundation has
successfully prepared hundreds of underserved
schoolchildren for educational opportunities that
lead to college success. Year after year, the
accomplishments of Steppingstone Scholars
show that with the right combination of high
expectations and meaningful support, children who
are willing to work hard can reach their potential
and make their college aspirations a reality,
regardless of circumstance.
Steppingstone’s programs in Boston, Philadelphia,
and Hartford set underserved students on the path
to college by preparing them to get into and succeed
at top college preparatory schools in middle and
high school. Once admitted, Scholars participate
in an intensive course of academic preparation that
begins with a six-week summer session, continues
during the school year with classes after school and
on Saturdays, and concludes with a second summer
session. The rigorous curriculum prepares Scholars
for the challenges of getting into and excelling at top
independent and public exam schools.
Steppingstone also works closely with Scholars
and their families on all aspects of the independent
and exam school admissions process, from choosing
the right school, to applying for financial aid.
But Steppingstone doesn’t end there. Steppingstone
makes a long-term commitment to Scholars, providing
a comprehensive range of support services during
middle and high school to ensure that they thrive in
their new schools, ultimately graduating from high
school and enrolling at four-year colleges.
The Steppingstone Academy in Boston
prepares fifth-, sixth-, and seventh-grade students
to get into and succeed at Boston’s top independent
and public exam schools in the sixth, seventh, and
ninth grades, respectively. In 2009, The Steppingstone
Academy served over 950 Scholars in grades five
through 12. Over 90% of Scholars who complete
the academic component enroll at four-year colleges,
and 74% of the Scholars graduate from four-year
colleges within six years.
Since its inception in 1997, The Steppingstone
Scholars Program in Philadelphia has prepared
more than 300 underserved fifth-grade students for
acceptance and success in the
sixth grade at top independent
schools in the Philadelphia area.
In 2009, nearly 300 Scholars in
grades five through 12 were served.
The Steppingstone Academy
Hartford, which graduated its
first class in 2008, prepares
underserved seventh-graders for
admission at Connecticut boarding
schools in the ninth grade.
In 2009, the program served nearly 80 Scholars in
grades seven through 10.
Launched in 2007, the National Partnership
for Educational Access (NPEA) is a membership
association for programs committed to increasing
educational opportunities for motivated underserved
students across the United States. NPEA currently
has over 169 members, representing 30 states and
collectively serving over 30,000 under-represented
students across the country. NPEA is dedicated to
promoting quality, success, and growth among member
organizations, partner schools, and communities
committed to educational access. Members include
school and non-school based programs, charter schools,
independent schools, higher education institutions,
and other nonprofit programs.

When Yesenia Herrera’s fifth-grade teacher urged her parents to apply to The Steppingstone Academy, José
and Gladys Herrera attended a family information meeting to learn more about the program. Although they
were unfamiliar with the concept of independent schools, they recognized the opportunities a program like
Steppingstone offered their children.
When it came time to apply to schools, the Herreras relied on Steppingstone throughout the process.
“Steppingstone held our hands and guided us through everything, from filling in applications to preparing for
interviews,” said José. Yesenia was admitted to Dana Hall School, where she is currently a senior. Benji and
Abigail are ninth graders at Boston Latin Academy. “Steppingstone has supported them in their daily lives at
their new schools. With Steppingstone by our side, it wasn’t so intimidating.”
The Herreras take advantage of SMASH (Saturday Mentoring and Study Hall) during the school year.
“All four kids have used SMASH to help them with homework, projects, papers, and to ask questions about
school in general,” said José. “It’s an invaluable service to us because my wife and I work opposite shifts, so
quality time together as a family can be challenging, let alone sitting down to do homework with them.”
This past summer, Yesenia was selected to be a Teaching Assistant during the six-week summer session.
She was thrilled to have the opportunity to work with younger Scholars: “I’ve been in their shoes, going to school
during the summer. It’s not always easy, but if I can inspire them even a little bit, I’ve done my job.” Yesenia,
who was elected co-president of her senior class at Dana Hall this year, is getting ready for the college application
process and is planning on attending Steppingstone-sponsored college tours. “I am ready to grow and become
stronger, smarter, and more independent. I’ve been given the opportunity to do great things with my life, and
I won’t settle for anything less.”

Summer Opportunities Fund
There are many summer programs
that provide students with
experience or academic skills that
will help them stand out from the
college applicant pool. In 2006,
The Steppingstone Foundation
created the Summer Opportunities
Fund to provide Scholars in
high school with the financial
assistance they need to participate
in summer programs that will
strengthen their candidacy as
applicants to four-year colleges.
In 2009, Scholars took part in
the following programs:
Boston Latin Academy freshman
Yvesha Bellevue ’06 participated
in The National Youth Leadership
Forum on Medicine (NYLF/
MED), which introduces
outstanding high school students
to the world of medicine. The
10-day program connects students
with professionals from some of
the nation’s top medical centers
and faculty from renowned institutions
of learning.
Megumi Milla ’06 participated
in the SEARCH Program at
Mount Holyoke College the
summer after her freshman year at
Brimmer and May School.
The program is designed for
young women who have done
well in high school mathematics.
CJ Masdea ’07 spent the summer
before his sophomore year at
Boston University Academy at
Project Identity Summer Institute
on the campus of Morehouse
College. The program gives rising
academically gifted sophomore
and junior African-American and
other minority male students a
glimpse into academic college
life. The three-week residential
program replicates the college
experience with an intense
curriculum and enrichment
activities to assist in developing
their academic, social, and leadership
skills.
Noble and Greenough junior
Cassandra Desrosier ’04 spent
the summer on the campus of
American University in Washington,
D.C., taking courses at the
School of Communication (SOC).
Students explore the world of
communication through hands-on
noncredit courses taught by SOC
faculty as well as working
professionals including journalists,
filmmakers, and web writers and
designers.
Aliyah Harris ’06 of Boston
Trinity Academy spent the summer
before her freshman year at the
Emerson Young Writers Program.
The program gives high school
writers the opportunity to hone
their writing skills as well as meet
other young writers. The program
features classes designed to help
students focus on fiction or poetry,
as well as other genres including
screenwriting and memoir writing.

Founded in 1990, The Steppingstone Foundation ® is a non-profit organization that develops and
implements programs which prepare urban schoolchildren for educational opportunities that lead to
