The Autumn issue of Torque is an exciting one. We’re celebrating
our 60th birthday, the first round of the Carrera Cup is set for
the Australian Grand Prix and the 911 GT3 RS has claimed
Australia’s top performance car prize.
Porsche Centre Melbourne – formerly
Hamiltons – has been a part of the
Australian car culture for 60 years
now, so we have plenty to celebrate.
This issue features a fascinating
story which explores PCM’s history.
From our early days in Collins Street
Melbourne, where demonstrators were
parked kerb side and parking officers
were bribed to overlook them (no such
luck on Victoria Parade!), we take
a journey through the past 60 years
reflecting on our loyal clientele and
some well-known customers.
Anticipation surrounding the arrival
of the Carrera Cup cars has been high,
and now they’re here. 22 Porsche GT3
Cup cars, five of which are now being
looked after by PCM’s Motorsport Team,
in preparation for this year’s Australian
Grand Prix. What better place to watch
this year’s race than from our exclusive
Porsche Chicane Skybox, see our story
on page 7 for more details.
Confirming what we already knew,
Porsche’s 911 GT3 RS was voted
MOTOR magazine’s Performance
Car of The Year, and it was a clear
winner, scoring 1st placing from
all six expert judges.

As if the excitement of the Carrera Cup returning to Albert

Melbourne is celebrating 60
years’ unbroken history with
Porsche, making it one of the
world’s oldest dealerships
outside of Germany.
Australian pump manufacturer
Norman Hamilton brought Porsche
to Australia in 1951 along with the
world’s first two right hand drive
356 models – a Burgundy Coupe
and a Fish Silver Cabriolet.

The first Porsche dealership was
in the Southern Cross Chambers
at 315 Collins Street Melbourne,
while the ‘showroom’ was the kerb
below, where parking officers were
encouraged to turn a blind eye to the
two stunning new Porsches!
The Spare Parts Department was
a wooden car crate in the backyard
of Hamilton’s home, while the Service
Department was a service station
in Mt. Alexander Road, Flemington.
Since then, Porsche has had a number
of inner Melbourne ‘homes’ and name
changes. However the passion, and
many members of the sales, service
and parts team, have remained a
constant and familiar thread.
During this time Porsches have found
a place in the heart of many wellknown
Victorians. Australia’s 16th
Governor-General, Lord Casey, owned

two 911s in the 1960s – a cream
1967 model and then a mustard
yellow 911L. Melbourne Lord Mayor,
the late Irvin Rockman and former
Myer CEO Peter Bartels were other
notable customers.
Today PCM is still ‘home’ to many
owners, whose association with the
dealership dates back as far as the
late 1950s and early ’60s.
And PCM proudly wears the ‘No. 13’
tag in all its correspondence with
the Porsche factory in Stuttgart,
underscoring its special place in the
worldwide Porsche family.

In March 1965, ALAN HAMILToN
took delivery of the world’s – and
Australia’s – first right hand drive
911 while working at the Porsche
factory in Stuttgart.
He is pictured pushing a left hand
drive ‘901’ model into the Melbourne
Exhibition Building where it was
a highlight of the Porsche stand at the
1964 Melbourne Motor Show.
In 1972, Alan took control of Porsche in
Australia before it became a wholly owned
subsidiary of Porsche AG in 1992.
Alan remains a passionate Porsche
enthusiast, with a 1954 model 356
Coupe, a 1962 356B, a 1968 912 and
a 993-series 911 in the family garage.
The favourite is his new Boxster Spyder,
purchased last year from Porsche Centre
Melbourne. “It’s a fantastic car,” he
enthused. “A return to core Porsche
values. It talks to you all the time!”

JoHN CoX has been a Porsche
Melbourne customer since 1967
when he purchased a 1962 twin-grill
356B and took it in for a service.
“The Service Department was in
a garage in St Kilda,” he said.
“It wasn’t exactly state-of-the-art,
but Service Manager Eddie Hackel
did a great job.”
In 1974 he traded the 356 in on a
four-year old Signal Orange 911S 2.2.
Since then he has purchased two
further Porsches – a new Boxster
in 2001 and a 2000 model Carrera
4S in 2007 – both from PCM Sales
Consultant Michael Barker.
“People work here because they love
the cars,” said John. “It’s not just a job
and that enthusiasm is infectious.”

PHIL SCHUDMAK has the distinction
of being the owner of Australia’s first
356 Cabriolet and was Australia’s
first Boxster owner.
Phil purchased his first Porsche
in 1958 and has owned two further
new Porsches and another five
or so 356s since.
However his most treasured Porsche
is the 1951 Fish Silver split-screen
356 Cabriolet that he discovered
in Tasmania in the late 1980s, and
restored it to its current glory over
the next five years.
Fourteen years ago he added another
‘first’ to his stable when he took delivery
of Australia’s first Boxster – a silver
2.5 Tiptronic – just after midnight
on the Saturday of the Australia Day
weekend in January 1997.

Four years ago in 1997 he replaced
it with another new Boxster, again
purchased from Porsche Centre
Melbourne.
“Porsches were in a different league
in terms of their quality and simplicity,”
he said. “I see the Boxster the same
way today. It is a standout sports car.”

MAX ERRINGToN is a long-standing
Porsche Melbourne customer noted
for his fastidious maintenance
of his Porsches.
He bought his original red 1962 356B
when it was just 15 months old, and
when he traded it in six years later on
a new blue 911T it was immaculate.
Max treated the 911T similarly and
it was like new when he traded it on
his 930 Turbo through Austin King in
1979. The 930 has covered 107,000
kilometres and still looks like new,
with its original seats plastic-wrapped
under Max’s billiard table at home.
Max has always felt “part of the
family” through his 46 years
of Porsche ownership.
“At Porsche Melbourne you can always
talk to the person working on your car.
It’s a special place with a lot
of Porsche history.”

MAX WARWICK has owned an eclectic
series of Porsches over the years since
purchasing his 1971 model 911 2.4 E
Sportomatic from Hamiltons in 1974.
“The cars have always been exciting and
impressive,” he said, “however it’s the
people I have dealt with that have made
the whole ownership experience even
more memorable.”
Max and his wife Cheryl own a replica
1973 911 RS 2.7, a Cayenne S, a 997
Carrera S Cabriolet PDK, a 997 GT2
and a second generation 997 GT3.
He and his daughter Georgia finished
sixth outright in the 2005 Targa
Tasmania and he was 12 th outright in
this year’s Targa Wrest Point in his new
GT3. “Michael Winkler said PCM was
proud to support us because we were
the only father and daughter team up
there in this type of motorsport.”

so i can see myself as a Porsche
driver for another 15 years
I have been a Porsche owner for
47 years. My passion for Porsche
began with a white 1960 model 356B,
purchased from Norman Hamilton.
I was married in 1966 and drove my
‘B’ 2500 kilometres to Mackay and
Brampton Island in Queensland.
Upon my return I upgraded to a 356C.
I’ve travelled more than 1,000,000
kilometres in my Porsches. These trips
have including many happy family
camping holidays with my 356C towing
my boat to the beaches of East Gippsland
and beyond. A 2.7 litre 911 Targa
Tiptronic, was the first new Porsche
I bought and since that time, with the
help of Austin King I’ve owned four
more. In my 75th year I am driving
the best car of all, a 997 Cabriolet.
Working in the golfing industry I was
fortunate to spend a lot of time with
Greg Norman. Driving him to a photo
shoot in my new ’89 Carrera Cab he
commented on how much he liked the
car – I was pretty chuffed considering
his garage is full of Ferraris.
I can see myself as a Porsche driver
for many years to come – they’re just
made to be driven.

Practical Porsche pointers
Are you the only one who drives your Porsche?
If not, it can be annoying having to
re-adjust your seat and mirror settings
when you come to drive the car, just
because someone else has used it or
the settings have changed.
For cars equipped with Memory
Systems, a few minutes resetting the
systems is time well spent.
For example: On a 997 series 911
follow the steps below to reset your
Memory System.
– Adjust the drivers seat using all the
buttons including lumbar support
– Adjust both door mirrors for forward
driving. Leave the mirror switch
pointing towards the RH mirror.
– The car should be in Park or Neutral.
Turn on the ignition but do not start

apply Park brake. Press “M” and
“1” together. Now turn the mirror
selector to the left mirror and engage
Reverse gear. The left mirror will

– Finally, you must lock the car and
wait 20 seconds. Then unlock the
