Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland Warhawks guard Deandre Snow tries to get around a Offutt Air Force Base defender during the two teams' first round
matchup in the Joe Hall Varsity Basketball Tournament Dec. 8. The Warhawks will not represent the base in the National Military Varsity Basketball
Tournament April 12-14 due to losing in the Central United States Military Basketball Conference in March.
JBSA-Lackland preps to host national
military basketball tournament
By Jose T. Garza III
Sports Editor
The Air Force and Army’s best basketball
teams arrive at Joint Base San
Antonio-Lackland to compete in the National
Military Varsity Basketball Tournament
April 12-14 at the Warhawk Fitness
Center.
Patrons will witness seven teams from
four military basketball conferences battle
in a three-day tournament to determine
the armed forces’ best basketball team.
JBSA-Lackland last hosted the national
military tournament in 2010 where the
Warhawks advanced to the finals before
losing to Keesler Air Force Base, 73-72.
The base team will not have the opportunity
to showcase its talents on its home
turf this year, as it missed a berth in the
national military tournament by losing in
the Central United States Military Basketball
Conference Tournament in March.
JBSA-Lackland Fitness and Sports Director
Dwayne Reed is disappointed that
the Warhawks will not have representation
at home, but he said people in attendance
should still expect to see high
caliber, competitive basketball games featuring
players that could be on All-Army
or All-Air Force teams this year.
Trophies will be awarded to first and
second place teams, and All-Tournament
selections will be announced after the
finals.
“It’s a good opportunity to see some
good basketball,” Reed said. “Normally,
on an Air Force base, people don’t get to
see the best Army teams.”
The National Invitational Basketball
Tournament is one of many sporting
events Reed loves to put on in support of
the military.
“I really love giving back to the military,”
Reed said. “A lot of the teams bring
their families to San Antonio to go to the
Riverwalk, so I try to give back by putting
on sporting events on base.”
