From the Chairman
Thank you for your interest in Clarksville-Montgomery County. I hope you find the Chamber Community Guide and Directory
helpful whether you are a new resident, long-time resident, or are considering relocating to this area.
Each year, the Chamber issues the Community Guide and Directory to serve as a useful tool for you and your business. We
hope that, as in the years past, you find this to be the go to guide for local information.
For those new to the community, our mission is to fill the pages with information that will make your relocation to this
community easier. Clarksville-Montgomery County continues to grow in every sector and the Chamber is here to give you the
information you need.
Part of what we do every day is promote local business and encourage all members of the community to shop local. The
Chamber initiated a Live Local campaign several years ago to help spread the word about keeping dollars here in Clarksville-
Montgomery County. Each time money is spent locally, revenue is put back into the community to help in growth that directly
affects your business.
We also want to thank the members who advertised with us this year. Thousands of copies of the directory are mailed and
given out each year and with that comes exposure for your business. We hope that your investment proves to have a positive
return.
The Chamber’s success lies in the involvement from our members. Because of the support of the member businesses and
individuals, we are able to offer several networking opportunities on a regular basis. The monthly Business After Hours series
allows local professionals to come together and network on the third Thursday of every month. We also schedule Women in
Business, Lunch & Learn and Power Breakfast seminars on a rotating basis to promote professional development within the
community.
Along with the monthly Chamber functions, we also have annual events that are a way for the Chamber and its members to
come together and thank the leaders of the community. Each year, the Chamber hosts a Golf Scramble, Annual Dinner and
Gala and the economic Growth Summit. I encourage each of you to make time to attend any of the scheduled events and take
advantage of all the Chamber has to offer.
Sincerely,
Steve Kemmer
Chairman
History
In 1784, after years of exploring and hunting on the land that would eventually become what we know as Clarksville-
Montgomery County, Tennessee, John Montgomery decided that this was a lucrative area to settle. Being a man of vision and
an excellent promoter, he saw the need for a town downstream from Nashville. Together with Martin Armstrong, Montgomery
chose 640 acres just south of the junction of the Cumberland and Red Rivers.
In planning the town, Armstrong began at the river bank and laid off 12 squares of four acres each and then four more
squares, each with two acres. The north and south streets beginning at the river were named Water (now Riverside Drive),
Spring, First, Second, and Third. The east and west streets beginning at the south side were named Commerce, Franklin,
Main, Washington (now College Street), and Jefferson.
Named for George Rogers Clark, the Revolutionary War leader and colleague of John Montgomery, Clarksville was the second
town established in Middle Tennessee, Nashville being the first. A board of commissioners was appointed for the new town.
At this time the area of the Cumberland around what is now Clarksville was called Davidson County, North Carolina. But, by
1778, as more settlers pushed westward the northwestern portion of this county was cut off forming Tennessee County, North
Carolina. In 1796, Tennessee was founded as a state and the area around Clarksville and to the east was named Tennessee
County. Eventually, Tennessee County would be broken up into what we know in the modern day as Montgomery and
Robertson Counties.
School System
The Clarksville-Montgomery County School System has a
focused effort on improving student achievement for almost
30,000 pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade students it
serves. CMCSS continues to be recognized nationally for
its academic and professional achievements as well as its
progressive methods for helping students succeed.
School system employees are focused on personalization –
meaning that they work to understand the individual needs
of each student and try to accommodate those needs. There
is a shared belief throughout the school system that every
child can learn and succeed.
CMCSS continues to develop and strengthen a variety
of programs for ensuring student success. After-school
programs, innovative approaches in programs like virtual
high school and credit recovery, as well as other intervention
and transition programs for children in elementary, middle
and high school give students greater learning advantages
and provide them with opportunities to stay on track with
their peers. With increased rigor in academic areas, students
on all learning levels can benefit. CMCSS schools often are
visited by educational organizations from across the country
because of its continued innovative practices with students.
Thinking outside of the box, the school system started
freshmen academies in each of the high schools, a Middle
College High School on the campus of Austin Peay State
University and beginning this year an academy for Science
Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) that will be
housed within an existing high school.
As the seventh largest school district in Tennessee and
the second fastest growing city of its size in the nation,
CMCSS has worked to keep up with growth by overseeing
the construction of new schools and remodeling of existing
Since its inception in August of 1942, Fort Campbell has become home to the 101st Airborne Division, the only Air Assault
Division in the world. They are also home to two prestigious Operations Command units; the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne)
they earned during the Second World War, Fort Campbell and the 101st continue to be one of the Army’s most deployed
