The Amity
High
Amity has a reason to be
proud yet again. All the six
AIS schools across Delhi &
NCR have performed very well
both in terms of quantity as well
as quality.
Mr. B.N. Bajpai The performance can be attributed
to continuous classroom
Amity Group of Schools observation and change in the
method of teaching, which includes
motivation, interactive learning, and use of
educational tools such as K yan, smartboards along
with other concerned teaching aids.
A lot of emphasis has also been given to the assignments.
Students were given assignments on application
level and pertaining to HOTS (High Order
Thinking Skill). In the past one year, a lot of research
material has been developed to help teachers
and students. Standardization of curriculum of all
classes, which offers guidance on topics, activities
to be performed and projects has proved to be of
great assistance to teachers.
Amity’s brilliant results have been possible because
of the constant motivation and guidance provided
by our respected Chairperson ma’am. I hope this
progress will continue in future in both academics as
well as co-curriculars. G T
Ifeel I am at the very same position
when I was asked to sum up
my experience in just 5 minutes at
the YP grand finale. To sum up, all
I am very grateful to Chairperson
and support my urge to fight towards
harrowing issues like child mortality.
Youth Power, for me, is a platform to
create awareness on a larger scale so as
to make a difference in the society and
become agents for bringing progress and
development by being ‘the change and
The Youth Power journey was one of the
best phases of my life ; the denouement:
it has taught me to be sociably responsible,
confident, observant. It has opened a
purview that I was never aware of and
awakened my conscience to perceive the
world beyond my tinted glasses.
At the same time, this journey has not
been easy to conquer. It was astonishing
to find that in a country with 3.3 million
NGOs, hardly few were sentient about
Child Mortality. However, activities like
the ‘5th successful birthday’ proved that
a lot of students are willing to fight
against child mortality.
The most challenging aspect of my journey
were interactions with ‘Anganwadi’
workers and the inhabitants of a slum in
Okhla. Horrible sanitation facilities, unavailability
of potable water, dust and no
electricity was a common scenario there.
It was an uphill task to communicate to
the women the importance of vaccination
and delivery of children in the hospital.
But in the end, I managed to
convince most of them, making it to be
my cherished victory.
Being declared the Youth Power winner
was an epic moment for me. I was enthralled
and an ineffable feeling took
over me more so when I came to know
that I had also won a UN internship. The
past 2 weeks at UNIC (United Nations
helped me explore my own self, new
horizons and also made me aware of the
plight of the underprivileged and their
sufferings. It provided me with a platform
where I could do my bit. Teaching
and learning simultaneously was really
enlightening. All this gave me eternal contentment,
bliss and satisfaction. Not just
this, the title of ‘Youth Envoy-‘09’ and the
prize-my first trip abroad (to Singapore)
added to the ecstasy. I am really thankful to The Global Times for providing
me with such a platform.
The exposure that this internship is offering
will surely help build my media
Mission maths Olympiad
Get-set-go for olympiad as Prof. K. Kannan and R. Srikanth, Sastra University share their love
with the subject, expert views, calculation tips and much more with Pratiti Diddi, GT Network
Why do you think children fear the subject maths
Prof. Kannan: There are two philosophies for
learning any subject including maths namely-
Doing after learning and Learning by doing. The
main reason that children find the subject maths
very boring is that that they are not attuned to implementing
the philosophy of learning
by doing. The more they focus on this
approach, easier the subject becomes.
Prof. Srikanth: Maths is not something
to be afraid of. The key to develop a liking
for the subject is to learn it the right
way. Remember that lecture based maths
Prof. K. Kannan
is a complete no-no. Instead one must follow a step
by step procedure- first workable method, then thinkable
and finally implementable.
These days concepts like vedic maths and abacus
are gaining prominence. How effective are such
methodologies in generating interest
of students in the subject
Prof. Kannan: It is not necessary to
learn the details of vedic maths for very
young students from teaching point of
view. But it is important from mathematics
point of view.
To cater to the need of the advanced
mathematics per se engineering mathematics,
it is important that children are
taught the easier, logical and interesting
methodologies of vedic maths or other such
concepts from initial years itself; gradually moving
to the advanced level as the children grow up.
Prof. Srikanth: The earlier you start the better it is.
Vedic maths for instance is the base for all mathematical
calculations. It is not just a shortcut method,
but an in-depth procedure, more like an arithmetic
computation. It surely helps students perform calculations
faster, facilitating interest in the subject.
How does this maths olympiad workshop benefit
students
Prof. Kannan: The level of Olympiads
is extremely high. It takes perseverance,
hard work and right training to
make the mark. We aim to inculcate
such skills in students. Just learning
maths as a subject is not enough. It
aims to stimulate students’ interest and
enthusiasm for problem solving and to
develop their mathematical intuition
and logical thinking.
Prof. Srikanth: We have been conducting
such workshops for a while now
with Amity. Our main aim is that the students can
develop understanding of underlying mathematical
concepts and can make all of us proud by bringing
a gold at the Olympiad. There are many hidden Ramanujans
in the country which we need to spot and
train, equipping them with skills that are pre requisites
for cracking Olympiad.
Prof. R. Srikanth
How are teachers benefited from such
workshops
Prof. Kannan: If you wish the students
to crack Olympiads, it is essential to
have a different approach of teaching.
It is important to mould their thought
process towards the subject so that they can cater
to the high standards that Olympiad demands.
Prof. Srikanth: Training the teachers means training
the students indirectly. More the teachers open
up to new approach of mathematics, more effectively
Amity embarks
on an odyssey
Amity International School does India proud for being the first Indian School ever to make the cut
to the international stage of ‘Odyssey of the mind’ at University of Maryland, Virginia, USA
Sunita Srivastva, Faculty AIS Vas 6
Odyssey of the mind is a prestigious
international educational
competitive program that provides
creative problem-solving opportunities
for students from kindergarten
through college. (For more info log on
www.odysseyofthemind.com).
Amongst the 17 Amity teams that qualified
for the world finals, 16 students represented
India in the University of
Maryland between May 27-30, 2011.
Ecstatic with the success at Gurgaon finals,
super charged and upbeat with the
aim of proving their scientific mettle at
the international stage, our young scientists
embarked on the last leg of their
odyssey towards victory. Excitement
reigned supreme when the children went
to seek Chairperson Ma’am’s blessings.
The joy and enthusiasm to represent
Amity at an international arena spurred
Teacher Coordinators & finalists of Odyssey of the mind seeking
Chairperson Ma’m’s blessings (L): Finalists at University of Virginia, USA
further despite a trip spanning almost 24
hours and involving car, plane, bus, train
and a chartered bus ride. After all the
competition for which children had
burnt the midnight oil, dedicated months
working on projects and skit presentations
and racking their brain for the
spontaneous round, had finally arrived.
University of Maryland, USA was nothing
less than a creative extravaganza
where more than 800 teams from all
across the world participated, shared
their ideas and work for the World Finals
2011. When the beaming, traditionally
clad Indian team walked into the arena
for the inaugural function, a loud applause
welcomed them. The boys in
white dhoti, safaa and kurta with the
tricolor dupatta and the girls in white
brocade lehenga choli and ethnic jewelry
won everyone’s heart.
The three day event provided an electric
setting of camaraderie and was a
huge learning experience for these 16
gems of Amity and us teachers as well.
The highlight of the event was the encouragement
and applause that Amity
received, courtesy the first ever participation
of an Indian team. Our joy knew
no bounds when our two teams Division
I and II received a standing ovation
from judges. That was truly a
humbling feeling. The bonhomie of the
Indian families there offered a warm
feeling, making it an exhilarating experience,
which children shall cherish for
enable us to excel and bring laurels for
Vision & Mission
The project, a vision of the Quality Assurance
University was to be designed in a manner
that would enable the user to evaluate
the performance of individuals,
batches, courses and even the institutes
over a set of given criteria and measures.
It aimed to generate automated summaries
specified by the user
We developed it as a web application
that summarises the general trend of results
of the desired institute, course and
with previous batches and
helps recognise the pattern of growth of
Tasting Success
After 3 months of rigorous research, development
and testing, we finally installed
and deployed the project in the
QAE Cell on August 7, 2010. The software
will take over the manual system
technical requirements met by the software,
it also reduces human efforts and
minimizes the chances of errors.
Learning experience
Working on the project was like short
how such large scale projects are implemented,
what are the shortcomings and
most importantly how to deal with reliability,
testing and security issues. G T
Who does not love treats And more so if the treat
is by far the most unique thing you have ever
experienced. My treat was a scientific one, and
being an ardent science lover, it thrilled me beyond
bounds.
It happened as my favourite science teacher Namita
Ma’am announced that the students who score full
marks in science would get a special invitation to
spend the whole day with her, doing exciting experiments.
Science being my favourite subject I was sure
to score well but the thrill of spending a fun
filled science day, made me work even
harder. When the results were announced,
I was overjoyed to learn that I was one
of the five lucky ones selected for the
treat.
Namita Ma’am’s house was full of exciting
and interesting things. To begin
with, we were amazed to see her collection
of books and encyclopedias. The
book on ‘Amazing Facts’ caught my attention.
There were many books on
plants too. I love plant life and her garden
was indeed full of a large variety
of plants. I marveled to see how the
Venus Fly trap and Pitcher plant trap
insects.
There was an aquarium too. It housed a
variety of fishes from all over the world.
There were cat fishes, tiger fishes, sea anemones and lots
others. There were six carnivorous fishes too! But it was
strange that they were swimming only on the top of the tank.
Before we knew it, it was lunch time. Namita ma’am pampered
us with a host of tasty delicacies. We were awestruck
to see robots serving food. I even tried talking to them using
a special code which she revealed to us.
After the delicious lunch, I was even more thrilled when the
robots brought out many small pieces to make a remote controlled
airplane. When it was finally assembled, I had an exciting
time flying it in the garden. I realized I could do many
amazing things with it. I could change it’s direction, speed
and even it’s colour.
As all good things come to an end. So did our dream treat.
Soon, it was and time for us to go home. As we thanked our
teacher and prepared to leave she placed a beautifully decorated
box in each one’s hand, asking us not to open it till we
reached home. When I opened my box I could not believe
my eyes and jumped out in glee to see a baby turtle in it. It
even contained the aeroplane that I had so patiently assembled.
But alas! as I woke up I realized it was only a dream.
I hope my dream turns true one day. G T
Inside the crowded corridors of ‘Every Other Day’
(EOD) you can hear the fall of the pins every
minute and see people enjoying a game which is
becoming quite a rage with old and young alike.
Thanks to the likes of the National tenpin bowling
champion Harsh Vardhan Sarda, who is an old hand at
the sport. You can see him almost everyday tutoring
people who aspire to follow his footsteps. He already
has a lot of students learning under him, and many pour
everyday. An eminent member of Delhi Bowling team,
Mr. Sharda has had the privilege of representing India
at various international events. He has won the National
level competition thrice and his sheer passion for
the sport has made him dedicate a lot of time training
his students and organizing tournaments. In an interview
with Global Times Mr Sharda shares how he is
trying to popularize bowling in a nation which eats,
drinks and sleeps cricket.
My Sport, my passion: I began playing almost 30
years ago. But as I kept playing, I began to develop an
interest for this game which later turned into passion.
Bowling is a popular game world over. The best part
about the game is that it makes the player mentally
strong and improves hand and eye coordination. It also
needs lot of stamina and skill. You can play it anytime,
any day, you don’t have to worry about the rain or the
sun outside. Even people who are 60 or 70 years old
can play this game happily.
It’s all in the family: My son, Dhruv also likes to
bowl. He is one of the finest players. He is ranked 20th
internationally. He performed brilliantly at the Asian
Bowling Championship and finished 11th among 51
teams. This was the country’s best performance so far.
Incidentally, even my wife is also a National champion.
Bowling v/s other sports: The news that bowling has
emerged as the most popular sport leaving football, tennis
and cricket way behind can startle anyone in this
cricket crazy nation. But it is true that bowling, the
world’s oldest and greatest sport has immense potential
to involve people in large numbers as it requires very
little physical effort unlike other sports. It mainly requires
mastering the technique and acquiring mental
strength. The best part about the game is that it generates
same excitement as hitting a six does. You can see
people jumping with joy every time they score a strike.
Promoting the Game: My primary objective is to popularize
the game in North India. And gradually take it
across the length and breadth of the country. It is important
to take one step at a time. Creating awareness
about this sport is my top priority. And the credit for
this game making major inroads in Delhi and NCR
goes to EOD.We plan to hold “Exciting Team League”
every Saturday and Sunday where each player has to
beat his own previous score to win a point for his team.
Road Ahead: The game is bound to pick up and I can
ensure you that player who chooses to take it as a career
has a very bright future ahead. We have just appointed
an extremely talented Malaysian coach for our team,
Mr. Chia, who is striving very hard to bring out the best
in each player. With discovery of young talent everyday
from across the nation I can say that the day is not
far when bowling will win India maximum gold. EOD
is planning to hold a special league in July to promote
the game and the participants who excel in it would
enjoy an all paid trip abroad to prepare them for CWG
and Asian Games. With utmost commitment and determination,
we are bound to make a difference. G T
also Amitians earned laurels for their alma mater
However, in life, we should not weigh success in
The fruits of success cannot be savoured until
we have tasted failure. Failures are the stepping
“3 Idiots” highlighted the despair and
frustration prevalent amongst students
because of the old education model
practiced in our country. Do we need
to revamp our education system and
make it stress free for the students Or
will this move make students lax
The Global Times spoke to some students
and Department heads and this
is what we found. According to Maj
Gen A K Jain, Additional Director
ASET, “An engineering student should
have strong fundamentals and mastery
over subjects. This can only be acquired
if theoretical knowledge is supported
by practical training. If a
student opts for higher studies, he
should be prepared for extensive studies
as once he steps out of college, he
has to struggle a lot to prove his
worth.”
“The focus should be on imparting
more practical knowledge. Independent
projects give students the much
needed confidence essential to survive
in the corporate world. The education
system should leave room for participation
in sports and other extracurricular
activities. The pressure of studies
should not nip their talent,” believes
Prof Kaiser Singh, HoD, Computer
Avantika Tahim, a second year student
feels, “The education model
Reign of
of knowledge. It is the experience
gained during internship
which counts the most while looking
out for jobs. I am not against holding
examinations to assess and evaluate
student’s knowledge. But most students
evil masters. What thoughts cross their mind when
they set out to give their evil designs concrete shape
Do they ever ponder about the fate that awaits them
Do they realize that it would take years for individuals,
families and nations to recover from such jolts
Do they ever realize the pain, anguish and humiliation
their families have to suffer after they lay their
Pain is universal. It does not understand the divide of
culture, religion and language. It does not differentiate
between Muslim, Christian, Hindu or Sikh. It is
high time we realize that God has sent us with a mission
to make this planet more beautiful and not get
waylaid by blindly following a frenzied man who
thinks he can play God’s chosen one
Well, we can all rejoice and celebrate the end of terror
sagacity of pursuing a policy of nuclear
proliferation at the
Short Story
It’s Me
Godzilla ate
my homework
Danishta Kaul, VI F, AIS Noida
Once there was a boy named Jake. He always
wanted a guinea pig as his pet but
his parents didn’t allow him to have a pet.
But one day Jake forced his parents to buy him a
guinea pig and at last they bought him one. Jake
named the guinea pig Godzilla. Jake liked
Godzilla a lot and she was more of a
friend for him. But Godzilla had a
bad habit, she used to eat anything
and everything- especially paper.
Illustration: Ravinder Gusain
For instance one day she chewed Martha’s (Jake’s
elder sister) phone message which Jake had written
on a piece of paper. Also Godzilla always ate
Jake’s home work and thus Jake always used to
get scoldings from his teachers. One day Jake’s
teacher Mr. Parker called up his dad and told him
that Jake had not been submitting his homework
since a week. When Jake’s father asked him why
he wasn’t submitting his homework, Jake told his
dad that Godzilla always ate his homework. So,
one day Jake’s dad took Godzilla back to the store
from where they had bought him. Jake became
very upset when he came to know that Godzilla
was gone. But soon Jake forgot about Godzilla
and was a nice boy once again. Mr. Parker was
also very happy with Jake’s performance as he
stood first in his class.
any relationship be it with friends, parents or
admire, love, adore and respect.Inspite of being
an extrovert by basic nature, there is lack of confidence
Why should boys have
all the fun
Well, they can if the boy
in question is Rannvijay!
Ranvijay with
Surabhi
Surabhi Dogra, XII, AIS Saket
Why should boys have all the
fun this cricket season (barring
Rannvijay, of course)
Pond’s organized the first of of its kind
‘Pond’s fun in the sun’ initiative in Select
City Walk, Saket on May 28. This
unique concept was targeted towards
girls, encouraging them to leave their
skin worries and enjoy having fun in the
sun. The initiative was held to commemorate
the launch of Pond’s White
Beauty Blemish Protection UV Cream.
Delhi girls competed in adventure
sports like rock climbing and the highly
popular paintball. Foot spas and free facials
helped them cool off after the tiresome
afternoon. But hair braiding,
tattoo making and nail art turned out to
be the rage among them.
The event kicked off with the grand entrance
of VJ and actor Rannvijay. Playing
the role of a perfect host, he kept the
girls entertained and made them hyperventilate!
And when you grab a slice of
conversation with him…the adrenaline
just goes higher. Sample this!
Me: Endorsing a cosmetic brand like
Ponds, wasn’t that supposed to be the
job of Bollywood actresses
Rannvijay: (Smiles) Well that is true!
But Ponds decided to rope me in because
of my love for adventure sports.
The fact that I love adventure makes me
popular among boys and girls alike.
havING fun!
All Pics: Pratiti Diddi
Also I felt that this kind of concept will
help in changing the misconception that
girls can’t take on adventure!
Me: Okay, so what is more important to
you - Girls or Adventure Sports
Rannvijay: (chuckles) Most definitely,
girls! Though, both put together is a
great combination! An adventurous
woman is always more attractive. She
may not be a pro at games but if she
wants to enjoy a sport reflects that she
wants to live life king size. One always
wants to be in such company.
(Random media guy to random media
woman: “Arrey jagah toh deejiye
shooting karne ke liye!”
my favoUritest kodak moment ever! pinch me
Rannvijay comes to the rescue!
“Dekhiye aap aise mat chillayie! Girls
you take your time!” (Awwwwww!))
Me (still aww…ing): Let us talk about
what you are best known for – VJ!
Rannvijay: A VJ talks about the videos
being played but that is not the case in
India. We have more of reality show
hosts than VJs. People like Cyrus
Broacha have been doing the job since
the dinosaur ages (laughs)! So, veejaying
in India has a long way to go!
Me: A roadie, a host and a judge…but
who is the real Rannvijay
Rannvijay: I am an absolutely fun loving
person (Me too!). I love adventure
sports
and games. Basketball has always been
my passion and I still enjoy playing
around with the ball! I also love hanging
around with my friends.
Me: How about Rannvijay, the student
I know its been a long time but still…
Rannvijay (smiles again…yay!): When
I was doing my B.Com (Hons.) from
Hansraj College, I was struggling to
pass! And if it weren’t for that I would
not have been standing in front of such
loving and adoring fans (count me in!).
So, my advice is for parents and not
students. Do not put pressure on your
kids and let them do what they love.
(Mom, are you listening).
Me: Being a Delhite essentially, what
would be your advice for your Mumbaikar
friends when they visit Delhi
Rannvijay: (counts on fingers) First,
Mumbai girls, stay away from late night
autos. The metro is cooler! Then, boost
your appetite, Delhi offers you the best
food ever. Third, if you are coming during
summers, be prepared and if you are
coming in winters, again be prepared!
Me: Okay, can we have a picture
please
Rannvijay: Yeah, sure! (My favouritest
Kodak moment ever! Pinch me) G T
Devil’s Advocate
Scams busted, controversies meddled with, dirty politics
exposed, all this and more on Karan Thapar’s ‘Devil’s Advocate.’
It may sound unusual to see an otherwise
unperturbed, well done up
Jayalalitha wipe sweat off her
brow, when asked about the Karuna-
Jaya spat. Or Farooq Abdullah declare
with candor that Tharoor’s resignation
was called for or a rather charming Fatima
Bhutto upfrontly call her aunt, the
slain Pakistani CM, a power snatcher.
Well, surprised Scams busted, controversies
meddled with (rather
cleared), dirty politics exposed and
shockingly, the truth wrenched out
from the mud slinging...all of it, only
on the DEVIL’S ADVOCATE. And all
this comes at the behest of the show’s
man – Karan Thapar.
We are regularly lectured about how
Tune into Devil’s
Advocate on
CNN-IBN every
Sunday at 8:30 pm.
appearances can be deceptive, and well,
yes they are. The seemingly polished, benign,
Oxford-Harvard product Karan
Thapar can surely give nightmares to the
strongest of leaders like Modi who
chicken out when fired with misdeeds of
the past in the middle of the interview itself!
The clean media personnel gets his
hands dirty by delving deep in all the political
scams and shovels the dirt out for
the world to see. No one wants to have a
fallout with the high and mighty except
for the intrepid Thapar, who is indeed
a devil in disguise.
Every defamed person gets his
only chance to drop the sack full of scandals
off their backs only at the mercy of
the one and only - Karan.
Squabbles that demand an answer often
take a backseat with us when a pretty Ash
dresses up for Cannes. But not for Thapar!
He makes people relive the horror by
dwelling on their turbulent and not rightly
secretive past and purges them off their
habit of burying the truth.
As CNN-IBN puts it, “Razor sharp analysis
of the truth”-Devil’s Advocate stands
by it. G T
