PS Note
Stuck!
“Stuck!” That is what Mila, my granddaughter, proclaims when she is
precariously between here and there. She is getting out of her booster
chair and not quite with her feet on the floor … “Stuck!” You are helping
Mila take her coat off and her arm is bent in a weird way half out of the
cumbersome sleeve … “Stuck!” Everyone else is out of the car and you
fumble trying to get her out of her tight car seat … “Stuck!”
Between here and there. That uncomfortable no-man's land. Will you get
there Is anybody going to help me Am I stuck here indefinitely Lord
My friend, Don, entered University Hospital in Cleveland on Wednesday.
He is going to undergo a stem cell transplant as treatment for his cancer.
He will be in total isolation (the “bubble” he calls it) for many weeks. Stuck!
My friend, Matt, has been out of work for six months now. Some good
leads but they dry up quickly. He is looking forward to the day he is
gainfully employed again. In the meantime … Stuck!
Emma's spiritual journey has hit a dry patch. The Lord, who had seemed
so near and intimate, now seems distant and quiet. The joy that was so
profound for so long is gone and in its place worry and frustration and
doubt. Lord, where are you Where am I Stuck!
God's people have regularly experienced “stuck.” Enslaved in Egypt, the
Israelites were told they would be leaving the land of their oppressors and
headed to a beautiful place “flowing with milk and honey.” Great! Instead
God's people found themselves in the wilderness—for quite some time.
Stuck! Nothing to do but complain, panic and fear that this is forever.
What do you do if you are Mila or Don or Emma When she is stuck, Mila
tells someone. And so should we. When King David felt stuck, he told
God how he felt. “How long, O Lord” he asked. When I feel stuck in the
wilderness, as difficult as it may be, I have to cry out to my God and in
doing so I remember his love and presence even in the midst of “stuck.”
“But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.
I will sing to the Lord, for he has been good to me” (Psalm 13). The
Apostle Peter who had his share of “stuck” and wildernesses writes these
words: “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” Don't
forget little stuck one, God cares for you more than you will ever know.
Even when it doesn't seem so. His eye is on you; he has you in the palm
of his hand; his plans for you are good and redeeming. Believe it.
Eventually Israel made it out of the wilderness and into the Promised
Land. And yet we walk by faith. We are not always certain where the other
side of “stuck” will be. But we are certain that we have a loving God who
cares for us and is ever-present and who is “finishing the good work” that
he began in us when he first claimed us as his own in Christ.
Worship
seek | focus | praise God
Worship is the submission of all our nature to God. It is the quickening of
conscience by His holiness; the nourishment of mind with His truth; the
purifying of imagination by His Beauty; the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of will to His purpose—and all of this gathered up in adoration,
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable and therefore the
chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the
source of all actual sin. --William Temple
