Description of the Line
The Derwent Valley Line between Derby and Matlock
passes through an historic and picturesque landscape. A
new hourly service from Nottingham and Derby provides
access to many great attractions and scenic walks.
Things to see and do along the way
A panoramic description of your journey along the
line is featured in the leaflet ‘Scenes from the
Carriage Window’. At Belper take a tour of Strutt’s
historic North Mill or relax in the tranquil river
gardens. Arkwright’s Cromford Mill was the world’s
first successful water powered cotton spinning mill
and situated nearby is Masson Mill Working Textile
Museum and Shopping Village.
Matlock Bath or ‘Little Switzerland’ is a popular
destination set in an impressive gorge. Visit the
Heights of Abraham by cable car, experience life as a Lead
Miner at The Peak Mining Museum or enjoy over 35 children’s rides
at Gulliver’s Kingdom. Crich Tramway Village (a 20-minute bus
journey from Matlock Bath)
provides scenic trips on the
country’s largest collection of
vintage, electric, horsedrawn
and steam trams. Matlock, in
the heart of the beautiful
Derbyshire countryside, boasts
the splendid Hall Leys Park, with
fine views of Riber Castle. Peak
Rail’s heritage railway is just a
short walk from Matlock station.

outward and return journeys.
Derbyshire Wayfarer is a Day
Rover Ticket valid on buses and
trains throughout the county.

Walks from the Derwent Valley Line
From all the stations along the line you
can join the Derwent Valley Heritage Way
or one of the 12 Derwent Valley Station to
Station Walks. The Cromford Canal can be
joined at Cromford, Whatstandwell or
Ambergate and links to the High Peak
Trail. The Limestone Way to Castleton
begins in Matlock. Local maps are
situated at Derwent Valley Line Stations
showing local walks, tourist
Nottingham attractions and bus information.
