This building once housed the Jewish Daily Forward,<br />
the Yiddish-language newspaper, founded in 1897.<br />
The paper brought a wider vision of American life to<br />
the as-yet unassimilated Jewish population and had a<br />
circulation of 250,000 readers at its peak.<br />

This non-profit educational organization enters historic,<br />
landmarked synagogues on public & private customized<br />
walking tours for groups of all backgrounds &<br />
ages. The LESJC is dedicated to preserving, sharing &<br />
celebrating the Jewish heritage of the LES. The Visitor’s<br />

Museum tells the story of<br />
immigrant families. Visitors view<br />
restored apartments of past residents from different<br />
time periods of 97 Orchard Street, which was home to<br />
7000 people from 1863–1935. Shop Life, our first new<br />
tour since ’08, opened in Dec 2012.
