<strong>Nailsworth</strong> folk: - Norman Phillips<br />

Because of his deep-rooted<br />
association with<br />
<strong>Nailsworth</strong>, Norman has<br />
become one of the town’s<br />
most recognisable<br />
personalities. He keeps<br />
himself extremely well<br />
informed on all town and<br />
local issues by regularly<br />
attending Town Council<br />
Meetings, devoting much<br />
of his time to reading in the<br />
library, and assisting in the <strong>Nailsworth</strong> Archives. ‘I like to<br />
know what’s happening’, he said. He takes a special interest<br />
in environmental and conservation issues and is wellknown<br />
for his enthusiasm for recycling steel and aluminium<br />
cans. He is also a member of the team that regularly<br />
delivers the <strong>Nailsworth</strong> <strong>News</strong>.<br />
Norman came to live in Glendower, Watledge in 1949; his<br />
mother had bought the property from her Aunt Helen,<br />
widow of the poet, W.H. Davies, who had occupied the<br />
house until his death in 1940. In those early days he<br />
remembers a very different <strong>Nailsworth</strong> with family-run<br />
stores, a busy railway station yard, a clock on stilts and a<br />
garage in Fountain Street, six town pubs, and two-way<br />
traffic passing through Market Street (much of Old Market<br />
was still in private use). Since then, he has witnessed all its<br />
many changes, but happily admits that he wouldn’t want to<br />
live anywhere else.<br />
As a great nephew of W. H.<br />
Davies, he has often been<br />
consulted about the poet’s life<br />
and has contributed a number<br />
of items to the town archive<br />
collection. He especially<br />
remembers being a guest of<br />
honour at the unveiling of the<br />
W. H. Davies sculpture in<br />
Newport, Monmouthshire in<br />
1990 commemorating the 50 th<br />
anniversary of his death.<br />
Each week he takes part in<br />
three distinctly different kinds of church meeting. At the<br />
Friends’ Meeting House he experiences quiet meditation<br />
and silent worship, whilst at Christ Church he shares in<br />
readings and discussions with the Bible Study Group. In<br />
complete contrast to these gentle, contemplative activities,<br />
he greatly enjoys the Stroud Christian Fellowship meetings<br />
with their joyous and exuberant music making and song. He<br />
quietly boasts that, ‘By attending more than one church, I<br />
meet a wider range of fellow -christians’.<br />
Sadly, Glendower Cottage now awaits essential repairs and<br />
Norman is housed in temporary accommodation. He looks<br />
forward to returning home when the work has been<br />
completed.<br />

<strong>Nailsworth</strong> Library displays the town’s only permanent<br />
memorial to W.H.Davies. This beautiful tinted<br />
limewood relief panel was especially carved by<br />
sculptor David John for the W. H. Davies Evening<br />
held in September 1990 to commemorate the 50 th<br />
anniversary of the poet’s death. During that very<br />
special evening celebration of poetry, music and<br />
narration, David presented the panel to <strong>Nailsworth</strong><br />
Civic Society, who received it on behalf of the people<br />
of <strong>Nailsworth</strong>. The question then arose ‘where could it<br />
be safely housed for the maximum number of local<br />
residents to see it’<br />
The library, a literary resource and a central location<br />
and meeting place, became the obvious choice,<br />
particularly when the idea was so warmly welcomed<br />
by the staff there.<br />
It has proved to be the ideal site.<br />
