Nailsworth folk: - Norman Phillips
by Mike Brinkworth
Because of his deep-rooted
association with
Nailsworth, Norman has
become one of the town’s
most recognisable
personalities. He keeps
himself extremely well
informed on all town and
local issues by regularly
attending Town Council
Meetings, devoting much
of his time to reading in the
library, and assisting in the Nailsworth Archives. ‘I like to
know what’s happening’, he said. He takes a special interest
in environmental and conservation issues and is wellknown
for his enthusiasm for recycling steel and aluminium
cans. He is also a member of the team that regularly
delivers the Nailsworth News.
Norman came to live in Glendower, Watledge in 1949; his
mother had bought the property from her Aunt Helen,
widow of the poet, W.H. Davies, who had occupied the
house until his death in 1940. In those early days he
remembers a very different Nailsworth with family-run
stores, a busy railway station yard, a clock on stilts and a
garage in Fountain Street, six town pubs, and two-way
traffic passing through Market Street (much of Old Market
was still in private use). Since then, he has witnessed all its
many changes, but happily admits that he wouldn’t want to
live anywhere else.
As a great nephew of W. H.
Davies, he has often been
consulted about the poet’s life
and has contributed a number
of items to the town archive
collection. He especially
remembers being a guest of
honour at the unveiling of the
W. H. Davies sculpture in
Newport, Monmouthshire in
1990 commemorating the 50 th
anniversary of his death.
Each week he takes part in
three distinctly different kinds of church meeting. At the
Friends’ Meeting House he experiences quiet meditation
and silent worship, whilst at Christ Church he shares in
readings and discussions with the Bible Study Group. In
complete contrast to these gentle, contemplative activities,
he greatly enjoys the Stroud Christian Fellowship meetings
with their joyous and exuberant music making and song. He
quietly boasts that, ‘By attending more than one church, I
meet a wider range of fellow -christians’.
Sadly, Glendower Cottage now awaits essential repairs and
Norman is housed in temporary accommodation. He looks
forward to returning home when the work has been
completed.
Nailsworth Library displays the town’s only permanent
memorial to W.H.Davies. This beautiful tinted
limewood relief panel was especially carved by
sculptor David John for the W. H. Davies Evening
held in September 1990 to commemorate the 50 th
anniversary of the poet’s death. During that very
special evening celebration of poetry, music and
narration, David presented the panel to Nailsworth
Civic Society, who received it on behalf of the people
of Nailsworth. The question then arose ‘where could it
be safely housed for the maximum number of local
residents to see it’
The library, a literary resource and a central location
and meeting place, became the obvious choice,
particularly when the idea was so warmly welcomed
by the staff there.
It has proved to be the ideal site.
