Nailsworth Mills Bowling Club
As part of Nailsworth Festival, the Bowls Club had a
‘Taster Day’ when non-members who would like to
try out the game could come along without any
obligation and satisfy their curiosity with bowls and
instruction freely available. It was a cold, wet,
miserable day but still 5 people turned up to have a go
and 3 of them applied to join the club – so something
was right!
We are holding 3 more taster days – Wed. 26 th May
from 1pm-5pm, and from 10am to 5pm on Sunday 6 th
June and Saturday 12 th June. We hope to see you
there!
Cricket
Photographs by Martin Stone
I visited the Commoners’ Nympsfield ground on
Sunday 16 th May with your intrepid photographer and
witnessed a most entertaining game of cricket. In
scoring 178 by tea, with 71
from Nailsworth’s Simon
Elmer, I was fairly
confident that the home
team would enjoy an easy
victory. Not so! North
Cerney overcame their total
in 11 fewer overs to
comfortably win the match.
bowling for Commoners.
Of course winning and
losing are only secondary to
the “occasion” in village
cricket. Tea was exceptional by any standards.
(Particularly the egg sandwiches and the green olives
– yes olives!) The view of the countryside from the
pavilion is stunning and the bumpy outfield provides
endless entertainment, except if you happen to be one
of the unfortunate fielders! The Commoners youngest
player, India born Nareen Kumar, works for
Williams Kitchen and, much to the delight of the
team, has recently had his visa extended by one year
enabling him to complete the 2004 season. He has a
whippy bowling action and if he can achieve more
Nailsworth Tennis Club
has started a very busy summer season of matches
competing at various levels with other clubs throughout the
county. Despite all the uncertainty about its venue, the
members still enjoy a
friendly competitive
and social
atmosphere.
The club run six
teams in the summer
leagues, 3 Men's and
3 Ladies and can offer
team tennis for the
majority of members.
Since the formation in
1989 the club has
gone from strength to strength with the Ladies A team
competing in the Premier division for a second season.
Three qualified LTA coaches offer coaching to all standards
from the beginner to the team players. Adult membership is
up to maximum so this year we are concentrating on and
encouraging junior membership. Phil Sims takes control of
the juniors and has been progressively building up his
'squads'. The teaching sessions make the youngsters work
but are also good fun.
