Amazing Travel of Loggerhead turtle: Thailand-Australia
One female loggerhead turtle was caught incidentally by the fishing
gill net in 1992 around the coast of Mannai Island Sea turtle
Conservation Station, Rayong, Thailand. She was kept in captivity
about 10 years, her body weight increased from 80 kg to 104 kg.
She was released and tracked by satellite transmitter model kiwisat-
101 on 1 July 2002. Genetic study on her population was investigated
before releasing. DNA analysis could prove that her population
should come from Australian water.
The result showed that she traveled southeastward across the Gulf
of Thailand and reached to Malaysian water in 15 days. She
continued journey with steady swimming speed to the ocean passing
tip peninsula Malaysia and Borneo Island to Indonesian water. She
arrived Bali sea of Indonesia in 78 days and crossed to Australian
water, the last signal revealed her location end at the coast of
Western Australia near Derby city. Her travel ended in 135 days of
releasing with the movement distance of about 4,000 km.
Foraging Habitat of Sea Turtle
Distributions of sea turtle are recognized in warm and temperate
sea throughout the world. Adults of most species are found in coral
reef, seagrass bed, lagoon and estuary. Some also venture into the
open sea. Most marine turtle species spend much of their lives in
continental shelves, except the Leatherback tend to inhabit the open sea.
Male turtles do not leave the sea and females only come ashore to
lay their eggs on sandy beaches. During the nesting season, mature males
and females migrate from feeding grounds and mate near the nesting
beach.
Open Sea
Seagrass bed
Sea turtles are not generally considered social animals, however some species do
congregate offshore. Sea turtles can be carnivorous (meat eating), herbivorous (plant
eating), or omnivorous (eat both meat and plant).
Seagrass bed performs a variety of functions within ecosystem. As a habitat,
seagrasses offer food, shelter and essential nursery area for commercial and
recreational fishery species. Sea turtles are as grazers and browsers, and important
consumers at the end of food chain.
Home to more than 25 percent of all marine lives, coral reefs are among the most
fragile ecosystems in the world. Six of the seven species of sea turtles in the world are
found on the reef: Green, Hawksbill, Loggerhead, Flatback, Olive Ridley and Kemp’s
Ridley.
Only Leatherback turtles are normally recognized foraging in the open sea.
Sperm(Semems) Collection Technique for Sea Turtle
The sea turtle has been recognized as one of endangered
species in the world by IUCN (International Union of Conservation
Nature). But now population of marine turtle in Thailand have been
rapidly. The challenges that sea turtle now face form human activities
every stage of their life cycle, from loss of nesting beach, mortalities by
fishing practices ,eaten by local fisherman and the seawater as critical
habitats for sea turtle.
Sperm Collection Technique for Sea Turtle was based on
knowledge for studies on reproduction in sea turtle (Hawsbill and Green
turtle). This project supported research teams by Phuket Marine Biology
Center, faculty of Veterinary Medicine Kasetsart university and Marine
and Coastal Resource Research Center, the east gulf of Thailand. The
research has been conducted an artificial insemination for protection and
conservative of sea turtles in Thailand.
Threats facing Sea Turtle and the way to conserve
In nature, sea turtle reproduction is recommenced that there
are a small number of recruitments for each individual due to high
mortality of the off springs. Eggs and hatchlings always face to
many predators alone, the survival rate of hatchling then may be
lower than one of a hundred. In addition, now there are many
threats from human activities affecting to the number of sea turtle
population around the world.
In summary threats facing sea turtle are divided into two
reasons: threats or limits by natural condition and human threats.
Natural threats or limits
- Low survival rate, only 0.1%
due to various natural
predators
- Slow reproductive maturity,
need up to 25-30 years to
reach sexual reproduction
- Sickness
- Natural disasters such as
Tsunami.
Human threats
- Loss of suitable nesting habitat
due to unsustainable coastal and
tourism development
- Unsustainable consumption and
trading in turtle meat, eggs and
shell
- Accidental drowning in fishing
operations such as trawl net,
drift net, long line hook.
Conservation Measures
- Protect and conserve nesting
beaches.
- Educate and aware responsibility
for the conservation and
management of sea turtles
- Develop and use of "Turtle
Excluder Device" to work with
fishing trawl net.
Nowadays, all species of sea turtle are classified
as endangered animals in announcement of
Because many sea turtles disperse
and migrate over thousands of
kilometers and take 30 to 50 years to
mature, they are important
indicators of the health of coastal
local and global scales.
In a word: sea turtles are
"ambassadors of the oceans", for
conserving these animals means
