About <strong>Hobart</strong> <strong>and</strong> William Smith Colleges<br />
obart <strong>and</strong> William Smith<br />
are prestigious liberal<br />
arts colleges <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
an array <strong>of</strong> imag<strong>in</strong>ative, largely<br />
<strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary degree programs<br />
to approximately 1,900<br />
undergraduate students.<br />
Like most small, residential,<br />
liberal arts colleges,<br />
<strong>Hobart</strong> <strong>and</strong> William Smith<br />
afford opportunities for rich<br />
one-to-one <strong>in</strong>teraction with<br />
teach<strong>in</strong>g faculty <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>struction<br />
<strong>in</strong> small classes, as well as for<br />
robust academic choices. The<br />
Colleges’ emphasis on <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary<br />
study imbues not<br />
only degree choices, but <strong>the</strong><br />
construction <strong>of</strong> most <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />
classes.<br />
In addition, <strong>Hobart</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />
William Smith enjoy particular<br />
dist<strong>in</strong>ction <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> areas <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternationalism<br />
<strong>and</strong> public service.<br />
They <strong>of</strong>fer a rich array <strong>of</strong> studyabroad<br />
programs <strong>and</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><br />

work<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> faculty, creates<br />
opportunities for co-curricular<br />
volunteerism <strong>and</strong> helps<br />

<strong>the</strong> curriculum.<br />
<strong>Hobart</strong> <strong>and</strong> William Smith<br />
are located <strong>in</strong> Geneva, N.Y., a<br />
community (population roughly<br />
17,000) located <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> heart <strong>of</strong><br />
New York state’s picturesque<br />
<strong>and</strong> historic F<strong>in</strong>ger Lakes<br />
Region. The Colleges <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />
sit on a spectacular<br />
188-acre campus along <strong>the</strong><br />
western shore <strong>of</strong> Seneca Lake.<br />
The William F. Sc<strong>and</strong>l<strong>in</strong>g, one<br />
<strong>of</strong> only two research vessels<br />
owned <strong>and</strong> used by undergraduate<br />
<strong>in</strong>stitutions, allows<br />
students to use <strong>the</strong> lake as an<br />
area <strong>of</strong> study.<br />
The dual identity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Colleges — <strong>Hobart</strong> <strong>and</strong> William<br />
Smith — is a product <strong>of</strong><br />
history. <strong>Hobart</strong> College was<br />
founded <strong>in</strong> 1822 by an Episcopal<br />
bishop as a college for<br />
men. (One notable exception<br />
was Elizabeth Blackwell, <strong>the</strong><br />
nation’s first female physician,<br />
who graduated <strong>in</strong> 1849 from<br />
<strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ce-departed medical<br />
school.) In 1908 nurseryman<br />
William Smith established <strong>the</strong><br />
women’s college affiliated with<br />
<strong>Hobart</strong>. Today, <strong>the</strong> Colleges<br />
share facilities, faculty, <strong>and</strong><br />
curriculum, while ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

• For <strong>the</strong> first time <strong>in</strong> its history, a William Smith student was awarded a Rhodes<br />
