Charmed - Spartina 449

Inspiration for Spartina 449 products begins at our seaside cottage on Daufuskie Island, South
Carolina. Rich in natural beauty and steeped in history, it is here our lives slow down. The windows
of our home studio are framed by the towering branches of ancient live oaks and look out upon the
calm waters of the Calibogue Sound. Playful dolphins, majestic shrimp boats, and soaring sailboats
pass by daily on their mysterious maritime journeys. Spartina, the inspiration for our name, is the
native marsh grass that graces our shores and protects our pristine beaches. Thank you for your interest in our island and in
Spartina 449 products. We are proud to contribute a portion of our proceeds to the Daufuskie Island Historical Foundation,
a non-profit organization created to preserve and protect the island’s invaluable historical and cultural heritage.

The luxurious linen fabric that graces
every Spartina 449 handbag begins in
the lush fields of Holland and France.
Here the luminous, blue-flowering flax
plant is nurtured until it is ready to
be harvested. Then, following the rich
tradition of ancient Egyptians who
used flax for the production of linen
over 30,000 years ago, today’s skilled
artisans spin the flax into speciallycommissioned
intricate weaves of linen
that are Spartina 449’s signature. As
the raw flax is processed, it is blended
into a heavy-weight, natural linen
fabric that has added strength, quality,
and beauty.
More durable than cotton, which is
commonly used for handbags, the
exterior linen on Spartina’s handbags
is additionally protected with a water
and stain resistant coating. Combine
that with the fact that Spartina 449
uses only eco-friendly, water-based
inks in its designs, and the result is a
faithfully crafted and luxurious line of
stylish linen handbags and accessories

to over 200 animals including
chickens, pigs, cows, bees,
and calves like Gracie, island
residents pitch in to feed the
animals, gather eggs, collect
milk, water the community
gardens, and do whatever it
takes to maintain and grow the
island’s first sustainable farm.

Maggie's
Spirit

Maggie, a legendary Daufuskie
spirit, was the daughter of the
first keeper of the Haig Point
lighthouse. She fell in love with a
tradesman hired to do restoration
work on the 1873 structure, and
when he never returned, Maggie
was heartbroken. Some claim the
figure that is sometimes seen in
the lighthouse tower window at
night is Maggie, still waiting.

two wood boxes, logo sign and consumer booklets. Four large hooks are available to put on each side of
the unit. Lower cabinet doors can easily be removed to showcase more product or keep them on for extra
