Overview <strong>of</strong> geologic <strong>and</strong> tectonic history<br />

The oldest rocks in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Asia</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Pacific</strong> region are >2.5 billion-year-old Archean<br />

metamorphic rocks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Yilgarn <strong>and</strong> Wiluna cratons in Australia, <strong>the</strong> Indian craton, <strong>and</strong> parts <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> north <strong>and</strong> south China cratons (fig. 3). These Archean rocks mainly are metamorphic gneiss<br />

<strong>and</strong> granite, <strong>and</strong> make up <strong>the</strong> continental cores <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Indio-Australian <strong>and</strong> Eurasian tectonic plates,<br />

<strong>and</strong> are partially covered by
