2 Western University of Health Sciences
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
The 2010-11 fiscal year was another landmark period for
Western University of Health Sciences, as our four newest
colleges – Dental Medicine, Optometry, Podiatric Medicine,
and the Graduate College of Biomedical Sciences – solidified
their foothold at the University and throughout health
professions education, welcoming their second year of
classes and embarking on new endeavors.
The end of fiscal 2010-11 also put the finishing touches on
COMP-Northwest, which held its Convocation and white
coat ceremonies in July 2011, ushering in a new era for
WesternU by establishing a presence in the Northwest
through an osteopathic medical campus in Lebanon,
Oregon.
During the year, the University also deepened and broadened its research commitments, and completed
the first full year of operation for the Patient Care Center, which represents an innovative opportunity
for WesternU to realize educational, community health, and fiscal returns from patient care.
Throughout this growth and change – which is a constant at our University – our financial operations
and outlook have remained consistently solid, thanks to the outstanding foresight and operational
execution of our Provost/COO, our CFO, and by administration and staff throughout our institution.
Our net assets once again grew during the year, increasing a robust 4.6% in an economic climate that has
challenged any growth at all. This ability, year in and year out, to sustain ourselves financially has
allowed WesternU the flexibility to innovate educationally and operationally, and as a legacy of our
institution is as critical as the health-care professionals we produce and the culture we have created.
Our supporters, sponsors and friends are part of that legacy, as well, and are essential not only to
achieving great things today, but also to planning for tomorrow. I thank you for your partnership with
WesternU in this grand adventure, and look forward to the adventures to come.
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
The 2010-11 year has been a period of consolidation,
bringing together five years of intense growth. During this
period, refinements and adjustments have been studied and
applied to enhance the value and reputation of Western
University of Health Sciences.
Though the year was full of economic, political and cultural
challenges, our institutional stability has more than
survived. It has, indeed, succeeded in enhancing its
position locally, regionally and nationally.
In the process, an amazingly talented team of stakeholders
has invested its dedication and passion in an institution
headed for a position of historic significance in health care
education.
This time also has been one of reflection on my own contributions to the effort, after 35 years of
association with WesternU. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to participate by offering my
experience and what I have learned in a long career in osteopathic association management. It has been
valuable to focus on polishing every aspect of methodology, practices and planning needed to create a
platform from which to launch our next period of growth and improvement.
MESSAGE FROM THE PROVOST
AND CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER
Western University of Health Sciences’ financial soundness
has never been in better evidence than it was in 2010-11, as
the agility and innovation made possible by a strong fiscal
outlook allowed the University to deepen its commitment
to research and community health initiatives that will help
WesternU diversify while remaining true to its core mission.
On the research front, the Graduate College of Biomedical
Sciences welcomed Michel Baudry, PhD, as its dean. Dr.
Baudry obtained a PhD in biochemistry at the University of
Paris VII in 1977, under the direction of professors J.C.
Schwartz and J.P. Changeux, two of France’s most
distinguished neurobiologists. He then worked with
Professor Gary Lynch at the University of California, Irvine, and in collaboration with Dr. Lynch
developed a biochemical theory for learning and memory that remains one of the most widely accepted
theories in the field.
Dr. Baudry is an internationally known neuroscientist, is one of the 100 most-cited neuroscientists in the
world, has served on numerous National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health study
sections, and is reviewing manuscripts for a wide range of journals. He is an outstanding addition to the
WesternU family and to our research efforts.
WesternU’s longstanding commitment to community health initiatives expanded in 2010-11 to include
diabetes, as the Western Diabetes Institute was established and took up residence in the Patient Care
Center. This patient-centered integrated practice unit (IPU) is dedicated to diabetes and its adverse effects,
with assessments and plans of care developed using a team approach. The center’s staff includes
specialists from all over WesternU, who collaborate on research initiatives as well as patient care.
These additions would not have been possible without the University’s sound financial performance, the
strength of our academic programs and of our faculty, who are committed to our mission and strategic
plan, and the support of our many friends and sponsors. With these resources as allies, WesternU will
continue to innovate in the health care and health education arenas, and our students’ experience will be
enhanced by these efforts.
MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF
FINANCIAL OFFICER
Western University of Health Sciences’ long-term
financial perspective is one that includes maintaining a
strong balance sheet through all types of economic
cycles, solid asset quality, sufficient capital, and
diversifying a mix of core business strengths. The
University’s perspective is not complicated; however, it
requires consistent and disciplined execution. Our longterm
perspective has taught us that change will always
come, so we prepare for it by building our institution and
its ability to thrive, no matter the circumstances.
This past year demonstrated the successful balance of
enhancing the University’s core educational operations,
the continued growth of new educational programs, and
the continued strength of our financial position. To
sustain this level of performance going forward, the University will strategically plan to appropriately
position itself to address the challenges and opportunities that will be brought about by changes to the
nation’s health care systems. The University continues to broaden its research and technology base, has
successfully accepted its charter class of medical students in Lebanon, Oregon, and is realizing returns
from its investment in the growth of its community patient care service endeavors.
During the 2011 year, total assets grew to $242,174,954, representing an increase of $4,657,513, with
consolidated revenues up $14,658,695. More important, the University’s total net assets increased by
4.6%. Consequently, the University enters 2012 with optimism about continuing its stewardship
qualities, combining vision, entrepreneurial spirit, and an unflagging attention to financial
fundamentals.
In many ways, the fiscal year ended 2011 was a year in which WesternU’s financial identity was further
solidified as a durable, sustainable growth university. A university that students, faculty, staff and
community can depend on year in and year out.
MESSAGE FROM THE
SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT
Once upon a time, Dr. Philip Pumerantz had a vision of a
university and what it could be. In reality, that time and place
were neither far away nor long ago. It was 35 years ago and
started with 36 students.
As you read this, the 35th Annual Report of Western University
of Health Sciences, I suspect you will be as awed as I am by what
has been accomplished. When you look at a university that
now has more than a million square feet of space, more than
3,300 students, 1,000 family-wage jobs, and has an economic
impact in the greater Pomona, California, area of close to half a
billion dollars, this is well beyond what Collins and Porras
called “bold, hairy, audacious goals.” And now the College of
Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific-Northwest is another chapter in a vision that knows no bounds.
The Annual Report clearly shows this past year has produced a number of victories and successes for the
Advancement team that includes awarding more than $700,000 in student scholarships.
The willingness of our friends to help us support students in each of the nine colleges cannot be overstated. With
more than 12,000 applicants for the 1,100 seats in first-year classes, the issue is not about finding students. What we
face are social and health policy questions. Students who borrow large amounts of money tend not to go into
primary care disciplines because of concern about paying back the loans. There also is the reluctance of students from
less economically advantaged environments to undertake large loans and, rather, to go into fields that require less
borrowing, regardless of ultimate economic success.
As you read the Annual Report and enjoy the successes the university has achieved, I hope you will remember that
we always have students who need assistance. Scholarship dollars help us recruit outstanding students, and reduce
the indebtedness and increase the options of students upon their graduation. Scholarship dollars are critically
important to achieving the vision of what Western University of Health Sciences can be. To paraphrase Daniel
Burnham, the architect behind the 1892 Chicago World’s Fair, “Dream no small dreams. They lack the power to stir
men’s souls.”
Hopefully, our friends and supporters will continue to “dream no small dreams” and help us continue to scale ever
higher heights. For all past and future support, we are truly grateful.
A GUARANTEED INCOME YOU CAN’T OUTLIVE
YOU CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN AT WESTERNU!
A CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY will provide you with guaranteed payments. For the rest
of your life, Western University of Health Sciences will send you a check every 90 days or
once a year. While the economy may rise or decline, your payments are GUARANTEED.
You can count on this because we back our commitment with the full assets of WesternU.
The IRS favors these arrangements and provides the donor with a
charitable deduction. The total amount of money you will receive is
determined in advance and depends on several things, including
your age, whether you want to include a second income recipient,
and the amount you give to establish the contract. For example, if
you’re 65 years old, you’ll receive more than someone 10 years
younger who gives the same amount.
For the rest of your life, you will enjoy the satisfaction that your
charitable gift annuity will enable us to educate future generations
of health care providers who will save lives and change lives.
Western University of Health Sciences’ annual gala
A Tribute to Caring in November 2011 honored
AmerisourceBergen Corporation with the
Corporate Humanitarian Award, recognizing the
company’s continuing support of the College of
Pharmacy.
AmerisourceBergen has been a great partner, said
College of Pharmacy Dean Daniel Robinson,
PharmD.
Neighbor Pharmacy/Institute for Community
Pharmacy Scholarship Golf Classic, which will
celebrate its 10th year on June 13, 2012, and has
raised more than $500,000 in scholarships over
that decade. AmerisourceBergen is also establishing
a $25,000 endowed scholarship at WesternU, and
provided funding for WesternU’s Patient Care
Center Pharmacy, which is part of the Good
Neighbor Pharmacy Network.
Good Neighbor Pharmacy is a network of more
than 3,700 independently owned and operated
community pharmacies across the United States
and Puerto Rico. Good Neighbor Pharmacy is part
of a program offered by AmerisourceBergen, one of
the world's largest pharmaceutical services
companies serving the United States, Canada and
selected global markets.
Mike Quick, National Vice President, Good
Neighbor Pharmacy Development, was introduced
to WesternU about a dozen years ago, and he
continues to support the College of Pharmacy, its
students and the university as a whole. He joined
the WesternU Board of Trustees in 2004.
“We’re very grateful for the long-lasting
relationship, and students have benefitted
tremendously,” he said. “The scholarships that our
students receive help those that want to focus on
independent community pharmacy.
AmerisourceBergen has been very focused on
helping us achieve success for that group of
pharmacists.”
Amerisource Bergen sponsors the annual Good
“I believe for the future of independent pharmacy,
we need young people to come out and take over
independent pharmacies so they’re not sold to a
chain,” Quick said. “I have true love and passion
for WesternU - what they do, how they do it, the
quality of their deans, and the quality of the young
pharmacists graduating.”
Good Neighbor Pharmacy wants to ensure that
students graduate from pharmacy school with
knowledge of how to run a business and an interest
in owning their own pharmacy.
“It was a big priority of our company to make sure
14 Western University of Health Sciences
that we were getting education in the pharmacy
schools about independent pharmacy ownership,”
Quick said.
AmerisourceBergen provides $10,000 scholarships
to College of Pharmacy students, totaling more
than $500,000 to date.
“We always felt if we made the scholarships big and
important, we would be putting emphasis on the
importance of independence,” Quick said.
Interest in independent pharmacy ownership has
increased in recent years, said Jesse Martinez,
PharmD, College of Pharmacy Vice Dean,
Academic Diversity and Development. He started
an entrepreneurial business ownership elective
course seven years ago with eight students, and
now interest exceeds the class cap of about 30
students.
This 16-week advanced elective course requires as
the main project that each student develop a
business plan for a start-up pharmacy or a
pharmacy that is acquired. All of the recipients of
the Good Neighbor Pharmacy and Institute for
Community Pharmacy Scholarship have taken
Martinez’s elective course.
“I’ve had students take the program, then go out
and start their own pharmacy,” Martinez said.
“Now they’re guest speakers coming back to talk to
my students, so they’ve done the full cycle. The
students attending the class see the results.”
The students also receive training and certification
in non-sterile compounding. The elective is offered
in the last semester before they graduate, so the
class is made up of students who are very interested
in starting their own business.
“Community pharmacy is alive and well, and in
fact it’s growing again,” Martinez said. “Clinical
work is back in the community pharmacy. It’s a
great forum for a health professional like a
pharmacist to disseminate health information
through advice, consultation, disease management,
vaccines, travel service and travel clinics. There’s a
whole variety of different health care modules that
a community pharmacist can participate in.”
The Fletcher Jones Foundation
Endowed Chair for Nursing
Quality and Safety
“Safety and quality are front and center in national
health care reform, and is a leadership requirement for
all nurses,” she said. “I tell all of our incoming
students that no matter what program they’re entering
into, it’s their role to be a leader and their
responsibility to assure patient quality and safety.”
The endowed chair will put Dr. Boller in the national
limelight, Hanford said. She will have the resources to
travel and network nationally, write publications, seek
grant funding and help recruit other faculty with
expertise in quality and safety.
The College of Graduate Nursing is poised to become a
leader in quality and safety education as the result of a
$500,000 grant from The Fletcher Jones Foundation.
The grant is funding The Fletcher Jones Foundation
Endowed Chair for Nursing Quality and Safety, held by
Jan Boller, PhD, RN, College of Graduate Nursing
(CGN) Director, DNP Program, Health Systems
Leadership, Associate Professor.
An endowed chair is a prestigious honor that is highly
regarded in the nursing community, said College of
Graduate Nursing Dean Karen Hanford, EdD, MSN,
FNP.
The Fletcher Jones Foundation was established in 1969
by Fletcher Jones, co-founder of Computer Sciences
Corporation, a global business technology company.
Upon the untimely death of Fletcher Jones, the
Foundation was endowed from his personal estate and
is now governed by an independent Board of Trustees.
The Foundation’s primary mission is support for
private colleges and universities in California.
This funding comes at a good time to assist the College
of Graduate Nursing in advancing the
recommendations of the Institute of Medicine. The
1999 Institute of Medicine report, “To Err is Human,”
estimated as many as 98,000 people die in hospitals as
a result of medical errors that could have been
prevented. This includes adverse drug effects, improper
transfusions, wrong-site surgery and mistaken patient
identities.
In 2010, the Institute of Medicine issued a report, “The
Future of Nursing,” with recommendations calling for
nurses to be full partners in advancing health
16 Western University of Health Sciences
outcomes in the U.S. by providing leadership in the
area of quality and safety.
“The Fletcher Jones Foundation recognized nursing
because nurses are at the center of care, in the perfect
position to conduct education and research around
safety and quality,” Dr. Boller said. “The work of
quality and safety is done at the bedside of patients, at
the point of care, where it needs to happen. We see
nurses as leaders providing a safety net for patients in
their care.
“The safety net involves interprofessional
collaboration, as well,” Dr. Boller stated. “WesternU is
uniquely positioned to receive grants in the area of
quality and safety leadership because of our
university’s culture and commitment to
interprofessional education and practice.”
An important early step in utilizing this funding is to
talk to the community and find out how WesternU
can support their priorities, Dr. Boller said. She will be
reaching out to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical
Center, San Antonio Community Hospital, the
Pomona Unified School District and other local
partners.
The College of Graduate Nursing plans to hold a
Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN)
conference later this year, inviting quality and safety
experts to speak. Community partners will then use
this information to train their staff and measure
patient outcomes, determining whether the training
results in a reduction of errors.
“This endowment lends itself to measurable outcomes
in the community,” Dr. Boller said.
Quality and safety are a priority not only in Dr. Boller’s
work, but across the College of Graduate Nursing.
Several CGN students in the Doctor of Nursing
Practice program are doing their dissertation on how
to bring safety and quality into the curriculum using
simulation.
The college uses high-tech, high fidelity mannequins
that enable students to develop critical thinking
abilities and demonstrate skills mastery while receiving
faculty feedback in a controlled environment.
The seed for this comprehensive simulation skills lab
was planted by The Fletcher Jones Foundation when it
contributed grant funding for a high-fidelity
mannequin. That initial grant led to donations from
other organizations and the development of the skills
lab.
College of Graduate Nursing students are also placed
in clinical experiences, and as part of their assignment
are asked if they saw something unsafe while at work,
and if they spoke up.
“Part of their clinical expectations is not just to deliver
the clinical care needs of the patient, but to look at the
system needs, and identify threats to safety in that care
delivery day and what might we do,” said CGN
Professor Rodney Hicks, PhD, APRN, FAANP, FAAN.
The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses’
1995 study, “Silence Kills,” reported that more than 60
percent of medication errors are caused by mistakes in
interpersonal communication.
“The number one reason why we have medication
errors in health care is poor communication,” Dr.
Boller said. “It’s about communicating well in highrisk
situations with strong emotions. We’ve been so
impressed with how the students have learned how to
speak up in those situations to keep patients safe.”
As a result, CGN graduates are viewed differently by
employers.
“They’re not only clinically competent, but they also
move into leadership positions without leaving the
bedside, which is really important,” Dr. Boller said.
“The clinical nurse leader preparation that is part of
our curriculum is all about focusing on safety and
quality at the point of care.” -- Rodney Tanaka
In 2011, Western University of
Health Sciences revived a
fundraising golf tournament
tradition that was idle for 13
years, raising more than
$16,000 to benefit the
University Scholarship
Fund thanks to the
generosity of sponsor T.F.
Chen, DDS, who underwrote
the entire golf fundraiser.
Dr. Chen is back for another
round of the Towne and Gown
Golf Classic, to be held on June 18,
2012.
In 1982, WesternU Founding President Philip
Pumerantz, PhD, and his wife, Harriet, helped
establish COMPatriots, an organization of Pomona
business and professional people who came
together to “foster good relations between town
and gown, help educate the community about the
College and the osteopathic medical profession,
and sponsor various fund raising activities,”
according to information from the University
Archives.
A 1982 COMPletter says COMPatriots sponsored
the inaugural COMPatriots Golf Classic
Towne & Gown Golf
Classic sponsor T.F. Chen
Tournament, held on Nov. 18,
1982. After a 17-year run, the
tournament was cancelled in
2000.
After helping revive the
event in 2011, Dr. Chen is
again underwriting the
2012 tournament, which
will be held at the Glendora
Country Club, a short drive
north of WesternU’s Pomona
campus. Dr. Chen said he will
continue to sponsor the event for
as long as he can.
“Last year’s tournament went very smoothly,” he
said. “This year we are going to rise to a higher
level by getting more sponsorships and by
attracting more people to come and play. We will
have more prizes and more giveaways, so
hopefully this year we can get more fundraising
in.”
He says his goal is to more than double the
amount raised last year.
This year’s tournament will cost $175 per golfer, or
$700 per foursome, and will include a golf shirt for
each participant. Similar to last year, it will be a
18 Western University of Health Sciences
scramble-format tournament with a shotgun start
at noon.
Last year, more than 90 golfers participated, and
the event is expected to sell out this year, which
would mean 128 golfers or more, said WesternU
Senior Vice President Thomas Fox, PhD.
“This is fun and what a tournament should be,” he
said. “We could raise more money by raising the
price, but then we change the nature of the event.
We are trying to give people a chance to
participate that can’t afford other high-priced golf
outings.”
The tourney will include a new contest, the golf
ball drop, where golfers can buy balls -- one ball
for $10, three for $25,
or 10 for $75 – for a
chance to win a 50-
50 raffle. Prior to the
shotgun start, a
helicopter will drop
numbered golf balls
at a designated flag
on the driving range
from about 80 feet
up; the owner of the
ball closest to the pin
will split the money raised.
Symes Cadillac of Pasadena also is sponsoring the
hole-in-one competition for a chance to win a
2012 Cadillac.
Like last year, golfers can also purchase five feet of
string, mulligans, and free tosses that give them
special advantages to improve scores, all helping
raise money for student scholarships.
Following a dinner reception, golfers will be
awarded trophies for straightest drive and longest
drive for men and women; reverse Stableford
scoring for the four teams that scored the highest
gross scores; and four winning teams that had the
lowest gross scores.
Player packages are as follows:
• Platinum sponsor ($2,000) includes a
foursome, four tee sponsorships, four mulligan
packages, and a full-page ad in the tournament
program.
• Gold sponsor ($1,500) includes a foursome,
three tee sponsorships, two mulligan packages,
and a half-page ad in the program.
• A silver sponsor package also is available.
Dr. Pumerantz and WesternU Board of Trustees
member John T. McGwire, DDS, look forward to
driving a beverage
cart around the golf
course, meeting and
talking with everyone
for a second year.
Dr. Pumerantz
reminisced about the
inaugural tournament
in 1982, when he
won a gold-toned golf
club that is hanging
on his wall in his WesternU office. He said with a
smile, “I have to be honest with you, I won it in a
raffle.”
Last year he also brought back some hardware
from the tournament, “a shiny trophy for driving
around the beverage cart,” he said.
Dr. Pumerantz said he likes this revival of old
efforts.
“Dr. Chen’s support is very significant, because
with his help, we are able to raise money for
scholarships for students and to spread the word
about our university,” he said. -- Jeff Malet
*In Memoriam
Recognizing Our Circle of Family and Friends
Philanthropy has been an integral part of
Western University of Health
Sciences since the creation of its
founding college, the College of
Osteopathic Medicine of the
Pacific (COMP), in 1977.
Charitable gifts from a
small group of friends,
committed to sustaining the
availability of high-quality
osteopathic education, helped to
attract other visionary supporters
who have provided the resources to help the
University grow into the outstanding
comprehensive health sciences graduate
institution that it is today.
WesternU wishes to recognize
these generous donors, to
whom we attribute our
success in perpetuity,
through the President’s
Circle. This society of
supporters is linked through
their commitment to highquality
education and to
ensuring the future of medical
science and health care professionals for the
benefit of human and animal kind.
The amounts below represent the donor’s total giving over a lifetime.
