TWO <strong>CAMP</strong>USES AND TONS OF FUN!<br />

Are you looking for a summer program designed to fit the<br />

needs and interests of your child Would your child like<br />

the opportunity to select his/her own schedule of activities<br />

Then MKA’s <strong>STAR</strong> Camp is for you! Located on two ageappropriate<br />

campuses that include air-conditioned rooms,<br />

swimming pools, turf fields, playgrounds, science labs, art<br />

rooms and high quality athletic facilities, <strong>STAR</strong> Camp caters<br />

to every child’s interests.<br />

Campers create their own schedule based on their interests<br />

and skills and have the opportunity to try something new.<br />

Our programs promote the development of skills, leadership,<br />

teamwork and self-confidence in a supportive fun-filled<br />

atmosphere. MKA’s <strong>STAR</strong> Camp (Sports, Theater, Arts and<br />

Recreation) offers a wide variety of athletic, artistic and fun<br />

activities led by our highly qualified staff of professional<br />

teachers and coaches and experienced and enthusiastic<br />

camp counselors. Campers can imagine, create, play and<br />

perform in <strong>STAR</strong> Camp’s theater, arts and recreation course<br />

offerings or improve their skills in their favorite sport. Our<br />

courses are designed to appeal to all types of campers, so<br />

don’t miss this exciting opportunity for your child to<br />

experience the summer of a lifetime!<br />

Junior <strong>STAR</strong> Camp, located at MKA’s Primary School campus<br />

at 224 Orange Road in <strong>Montclair</strong>, hosts campers entering<br />

grades Pre-K-2, while campers in grades 3-8 are based<br />

at MKA’s Upper School Campus at 6 Lloyd Road, <strong>Montclair</strong>.


MEET THE DIRECTORS<br />

Ralph and Amy Pacifico are<br />

returning as this year’s codirectors.<br />

Together, they have<br />

over 40 years of teaching and<br />

camp experience.<br />

Ralph Pacifico has been<br />

teaching and coaching at<br />

<strong>Montclair</strong> <strong>Kimberley</strong> <strong>Academy</strong><br />

for 21 years. He is the Director<br />

of Children’s Athletic and<br />

Sports Programming and is<br />

the Head Varsity Baseball coach. Over the course of his tenure at<br />

MKA, Ralph is noted for starting the “Bitty” basketball and baseball<br />

programs in which all children feel confidence and success in the<br />

area of athletics. Every child feels special when they spend time<br />

with “Coach P.”<br />

Amy Pacifico is currently an elementary teacher in the West Orange<br />

Public School System. She has been teaching for 22 years. Amy is<br />

dedicated to makings each camper’s and parent’s experience with<br />

<strong>STAR</strong> Camp exceptional.<br />

<strong>STAR</strong> STAFF<br />

<strong>STAR</strong> Camp takes pride in hiring an excellent staff. Our instructors<br />

and coaches are mature professionals with years of teaching/<br />

coaching experience. They supervise highly energetic college and<br />

high school counselors who are dedicated to making your child’s<br />

summer a memorable experience.<br />

<strong>STAR</strong> <strong>CAMP</strong> SCHEDULE:<br />

Six one-week sessions from June 25 – August 3<br />

8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.<br />

Camp will be closed on Wednesday, July 4, and fees will be<br />

pro-rated for that week.<br />

EXTENDED CARE:<br />

Early morning supervision available from 7:30 – 8:30 a.m.<br />

Late afternoon supervision available from 3:00 – 6:00.p.m. at $10<br />

per hour per camper.<br />

LUNCH<br />

Lunch and snack will be provided by <strong>STAR</strong> Camp and is included<br />

in the camp tuition. Each day there will be a hot lunch, grilled<br />

cheese, or buttered roll option. All offerings are peanut-free!<br />

Beverage choices will include water, lemonade, and iced tea or<br />

apple juice. Ice pops are provided daily! Water is always available<br />

during the day, and coolers are located on every athletic field.<br />

FEES AND ENROLLMENT INFORMATION<br />

Since enrollment for each course is limited, early application is<br />

encouraged.<br />

1. The fee is $550 per week, $440 for the week of July 2 (closed<br />

July 4) is due with registration.<br />

2. In order to hold a space for your camper(s), payment must be<br />

in full plus a $50 non-refundable registration per child.<br />

3. All money is refundable until May 1, 2012 less the $50<br />

registration fee.<br />

4. There are no refunds or credits due to illness, absence or<br />

suspension.<br />

5. Enrolling for additional weeks is subject to availability.<br />

6. All campers must submit a completed Registration Form with<br />

Medical Information (see enclosed). No camper will be<br />

permitted to attend camp without this form, and no credits or<br />

refunds will be issued.<br />

7. The camp reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to suspend<br />

or dismiss any camper if his or her conduct is detrimental to<br />

the well-being of the camp or of any other camper(s), and no<br />

refunds or credits will be issued.<br />

8. Please note: Course offerings are subject to minimum<br />

enrollment and staff availability.

Each camper will be able to select five different activities from the<br />

<strong>STAR</strong> Camp Course Offerings for each week of registration, and<br />

will participate in those five activities each day:<br />

Junior <strong>STAR</strong> Camp Course Offerings<br />

Junior <strong>STAR</strong> Camp provides an opportunity for young children<br />

entering grades Pre-K-2 to be supervised in a core group of sameaged<br />

campers during most of the day AS WELL AS allowing them<br />

to make some choices for classes they want to take. Every<br />

camper’s schedule will include daily swim instruction and gym.<br />

Our 4-year-olds will also have “Activity Time” at the end of their<br />

day. The remainder of the day will be filled with different activities<br />

of their choice from the following:<br />

Bitty Basketball<br />

An MKA school tradition is coming to Junior <strong>STAR</strong> Camp! Players<br />

will learn the basics of shooting, dribbling and passing the ball in<br />

this popular sport.<br />

Build-A-Mania<br />

This class is a little builder’s dream! Have fun creating structures<br />

with Legos ® , blocks and lots of fun accessories!<br />

Dancing with the Junior <strong>STAR</strong>s<br />

Learn fun dance routines to today’s latest music! Campers will<br />

develop their rhythm, coordination and motor skills while having fun!<br />

Edible Art<br />

Little campers will have fun mixing, rolling, measuring and creating<br />

edible projects. Yummy and entertaining!<br />

Jr. Art Adventures<br />

Campers will create artwork using an assortment of media such<br />

as paints, markers, paper bags, cardboard and more. Campers<br />

will be cutting, painting, gluing, drawing and creating magnificent<br />

artwork for everyone to enjoy. Please note: Campers should bring<br />

in an old T-shirt to wear for painting.


Jr. <strong>STAR</strong>’s Got Talent<br />

At our young campers request, this year Junior <strong>STAR</strong> will have its<br />

own weekly show. Campers will work with counselors throughout<br />

the week to prepare singing, dancing or other acts to be performed<br />

each Friday. Broadway—here we come!<br />

Kiddie Computer Genius<br />

Keyboarding skills, basic Photoshop and video creation are just<br />

part of this tech class created especially for our littlest campers!<br />

Lil’ Campers Crafts<br />

Have fun making fuse beads, bracelets, key chains, lanyards and<br />

crafty stuff while hanging with your favorite counselors in this<br />

class.<br />

Little Kickers Soccer<br />

Learn the basics of dribbling, passing, and scoring with our Junior<br />

<strong>STAR</strong> coaches. Skills, drills, fun and games will keep your little<br />

kicker active!<br />

Science and Nature<br />

Build a rocket, study live species, have fun with experiments and<br />

science in a real science lab. Hands-on experiences are at the<br />

heart of this program.<br />

Zip Bounce and Slide<br />

Yes, you can believe it! Junior <strong>STAR</strong>s has its own zip line complete<br />

with mats and safety equipment for your daring young campers!<br />

Our gigantic bounce house and water slides will also keep energetic<br />

campers jumping and playing. This is sure to be a summer<br />

highlight!


<strong>STAR</strong> Camp Course Offerings<br />

<strong>STAR</strong> Camp Sports<br />

“Teams are made during the season.<br />

Players are made during the off-season.”<br />

The <strong>STAR</strong> Camp Sports programs are ideal for young players to<br />

begin working on their skills at an early and impressionable age.<br />

Older campers will have the opportunity to improve their skills.<br />

All camp athletes will be grouped by age and ability. Teamwork<br />

and good sportsmanship are the core of <strong>STAR</strong> Camp’s sports<br />

programs. All of our sports offerings are taught by experienced<br />

coaches.<br />

All-<strong>STAR</strong> Baseball<br />

Each day will consist of skill work including throwing, catching,<br />

infield and outfield play, hitting, bunting and base running<br />

fundamentals.<br />

All-<strong>STAR</strong> Basketball<br />

<strong>STAR</strong> Camp’s coaching staff will work on passing techniques,<br />

defensive positions, communication, rebounding and ball handling<br />

and basketball philosophies.<br />

Cheerleading<br />

If you love to dance and cheer, then you’re just the camper for this<br />

class. You’ll learn dances, cheers, chants, stunts, jumps and other<br />

fun cheering activities! Learn <strong>STAR</strong> Camp cheers to perform in the<br />

show on Fridays.<br />

Exercise with the <strong>STAR</strong>S (New this year!)<br />

Yoga, aerobics, pilates, zumba and basic gymnastics are all part of<br />

this high energy class. A great way to get fit and have fun!


Fencing<br />

Learn the footwork fundamentals to all three weapons of fencing.<br />

Campers will develop self-discipline, coordination and sportsmanship<br />

and participate in a Tournament Friday where they can test<br />

out their new skills!<br />

Golf Clinic<br />

Learn swing mechanics, set up and grip techniques from a<br />

licensed PGA professional. Equipment will be provided.<br />

Old School PE<br />

Games like Dodge Ball, Floor Hockey, Team Handball, Capture the<br />

Flag, Whiffle Ball and Newcomb will get campers up and moving.<br />

Team building and sportsmanship are at the heart of this traditional<br />

program.<br />

Rock Climbing<br />

Work with skilled instructors to build rock-climbing expertise!<br />

MKA’s facilities provide challenges for all levels of climber, from the<br />

first timer to the skilled veteran.<br />

All-<strong>STAR</strong> Football<br />

Instruction will be given in throwing, catching, and blocking and<br />

other offensive and defensive skills. Fun games and skill<br />

competitions ensure a great time for all!<br />

All-<strong>STAR</strong> Lacrosse<br />

Grab your sticks and get ready for fun on MKA’s beautiful turf field.<br />

No prior experience necessary! The skills and drills for cradling,<br />

shooting, passing and basic defensive concepts taught in this<br />

course guarantee improvement in all players.


All-<strong>STAR</strong> Soccer<br />

An experienced coach and collegiate players will be on hand to<br />

teach you key soccer techniques through challenging drills and fun<br />

competitions appropriate to your level of play. World Cup Day will<br />

be a highlight!<br />

Strength and Fitness Training<br />

Take advantage of MKA’s newly designed weight room and<br />

equipment. Instruction will focus on total body fitness for a strong<br />

and healthy lifestyle while also improving camper’s speed and agility.<br />

Swimming<br />

Divided into 6 levels for beginning to advanced swimmers, students<br />

are taught by top-notch instructors. Levels are: introduction to<br />

water skills, fundamental aquatic skills, stroke development, stroke<br />

improvement, stroke refinement and swimming skill proficiency.<br />

<strong>STAR</strong> Camp Theater, Arts and Recreation<br />

Imagine, create, play and perform in <strong>STAR</strong> Camp’s theater, arts<br />

and recreation course offerings. Please note that, if your child is<br />

enrolled in “Dancing with the <strong>STAR</strong>S” or “<strong>STAR</strong> Camp’s Got<br />

Talent,” there will be a 2:00 p.m. show every Friday. Come and<br />

watch your <strong>STAR</strong> performer.<br />

Archery<br />

Take aim at a real camp challenge as <strong>STAR</strong> Camp looks back to<br />

the days of Robin Hood! During the course of the week, campers<br />

will learn the basics of archery, gain accuracy and compete in daily<br />

and weekly challenges.


Art Adventures<br />

Create artwork using an assortment of media such as paints,<br />

markers, paper bags, cardboard and more. Campers will be cutting,<br />

painting, gluing, drawing and creating magnificent artwork for<br />

everyone to enjoy. Please note: Campers should bring in an old<br />

T-shirt to wear for painting.<br />

Boys Rule!<br />

Hang with the guys—homemade tattoos, string friendship bracelets,<br />

arm wrestling, secret handshakes and more are part of this<br />

course created by request of the <strong>STAR</strong> Camp boy campers!<br />

Chess and Board Games<br />

Take a break, relax, sit back and enjoy the classic games like<br />

chess, checkers and more. Gaming tournaments are part of the<br />

fun!<br />

Computer Genius I<br />

Explore the Mac system in this fun-filled cyber class! Campers will<br />

have fun with Basic Photoshop and Photo Booth programs experimenting<br />

with special effects, distance and object distortion. Make<br />

individual and group movies with iMovie and create your own web<br />

page with the iWeb program.<br />

Computer Genius II<br />

This course is designed for the older or more advanced computer<br />

fan. Campers will explore advanced Photoshop and iMovie options,<br />

animation using the Flash program, vocal recording and<br />

digital music mixing using GarageBand.<br />

Creative Cartooning<br />

If you love to draw, then this course is for you. With the guidance<br />

of a professional cartoonist, campers will develop and create their<br />

own cartoons and comic books.


Dancing with the <strong>STAR</strong>’s<br />

Learn the latest moves and choreograph dance routines to the<br />

latest popular songs, then perform them at <strong>STAR</strong> Camp’s Friday<br />

Show!<br />

Duct Tape Designs (New this year!)<br />

Join the new craze! Create fashions and accessories with colorful<br />

duct tape!<br />

Girls Rule!<br />

Chill out with your friends, listen to music and make beaded<br />

jewelry and string friendship bracelets. <strong>STAR</strong> girls will also make<br />

lanyard and fuse beads creations. Spend time at the manicure<br />

counter for some cool nail art.<br />

Legomania<br />

Put your architectural skills to work while creating a variety of<br />

planes, cars, trucks, spaceships, boats and buildings using<br />

Legos ® . Campers use their imaginations to build, play with and<br />

share their structures.<br />

Mad Science<br />

Icky, gooey, slimy and exploding projects are all part of the science<br />

fun in this new <strong>STAR</strong> Camp course. Learn science while having<br />

fun!<br />

Origami Master (New this year!)<br />

Learn Japanese paper folding techniques and create three-dimensional<br />

paper objects such as cranes, stars, airplanes, boats, frogs<br />

and more!<br />

Pinewood Derby Car Racing<br />

Campers design, build, decorate and then race their cars on <strong>STAR</strong><br />

Camp’s Pinewood Derby racetrack. All campers will bring home<br />

their cars at the end of the week. Please note: There will be an<br />

additional charge of $50 that will be billed separately.


Robotics<br />

Build your own robot to take home! Learn the fundamentals of<br />

gear drives, basic electronics, and schematics to build a robot.<br />

<strong>STAR</strong> Cake Decorating<br />

Kids love to bake! The <strong>STAR</strong> Camp decorating instructor will walk<br />

campers through basic techniques and assist them as they plan<br />

and perfect designs on their own cupcakes, small cakes or<br />

cookies. There will be an additional charge of $10 for this class<br />

that will be billed separately.<br />

<strong>STAR</strong> Camp Idol<br />

Get ready for the best show in NJ! SPECIAL GUEST <strong>STAR</strong><br />

CELEBRITY actor/singer DOMINIC SCAGLIONE – now playing<br />

Frankie Valli in the Broadway smash hit Jersey Boys will be on<br />

hand once a week to give insights and advice to help hone your<br />

performance! Work with counselors to perfect your talents and<br />

then perform in the weekly show!<br />

<strong>STAR</strong> Camp Journalists<br />

Learn what it takes to be a reporter. Find out about the who, what,<br />

where and why of S.T.A.R. Camp as we put together a weekly newsletter.<br />

Effective interview techniques as well as photojournalism will<br />

be explored.<br />

<strong>STAR</strong> Movie Making (New this year!)<br />

Learn the ins and outs of video making. Create a screenplay,<br />

shoot and direct your own short film, starring YOU! Our experienced<br />

staff will also teach you how to cut, edit and add a<br />

soundtrack to your movies!<br />

Top-<strong>STAR</strong> Chefs<br />

Make kid-friendly recipes that are fun and tasty! Create menus<br />

and take home recipes. Please note: There will be an additional<br />

charge of $10 that will be billed separately.<br />

FOR OUR OLDER <strong>CAMP</strong>ERS…<br />

<strong>STAR</strong> Camp’s Counselor-in-Training Program<br />

This program is specifically designed for the older campers. 7th<br />

and 8th grade campers can create a schedule where they can<br />

participate as campers in several courses and help assist counselors<br />

with younger campers in other periods. CIT’s will gain the<br />

confidence and training needed to work with and engage young<br />

campers.<br />

Groove and Move Dance Class<br />

Learn how to move to the Locations<br />

beat of music, how to put together<br />

dance moves into individual and group routines and how to assemble<br />

your own choreographed group dance.<br />

Legomania<br />

Papier-Mâché Paradise<br />

Campers will learn about the ancient Papier-Mâché techniques<br />

and create their own creative, decorative sculptures ranging from<br />

animals, people and buildings to dinosaurs.<br />

Pinewood Derby Car Racing<br />

Campers Junior design, <strong>STAR</strong> build, Camp decorate and then race their cars on <strong>STAR</strong><br />

Camp’s new MKA Pinewood Primary School Derby Campus Racetrack. All campers will bring<br />

home their 224 cars Orange at the Road end of the week. Please note: There will be<br />

an additional <strong>Montclair</strong>, charge NJ of 07042 $50 for this class that will be billed separately.<br />

Quick on the Draw!<br />

Study the art of cartooning and acquire skills to improve your<br />

drawing styles. Campers will create their own unique cartoon<br />

characters, with personalities and special abilities while working<br />

together to make a mural that tells a story about their character.<br />

Rocketry<br />

3,2,1… Campers design, build and launch their very own model<br />

rockets, enter two rocket decorating contests, compete in speed<br />

H<br />

building contests and attempt to track the height of their rockets.<br />

class that will be billed separately.<br />

<strong>STAR</strong> Camp Idol<br />

Participants will have the opportunity to practice popular songs of<br />

their choice. <strong>STAR</strong> Microphone Camp technique in live performance and stage<br />

presence MKA will be Upper covered School as Campus campers memorize and perform their<br />

chosen pieces, 6 Lloyd culminating Road in a performance for all campers.<br />
