Every child needs
security and comfort,
especially those who
have experienced a crisis,
tragedy or the hardships
of poverty. Local children
and new mothers are
finding warmth in homemade
blankets donated
by Rita Brummett and
her local Project Linus
chapter.
“It’s a really personally
rewarding situation
and you really feel like
you’re contributing to
something that’s worthwhile,”
Brummett said.
Named after the
Peanuts cartoon character
with a love for his
blanket, Project Linus is a
charitable organization
that donates blankets
nationwide to children
who experience a crisis
situation. Over 400 chapters
have donated nearly
2.5 million blankets since
1995.
Brummett’s
McDonough/Hancock
County Chapter has presented
650 blankets since
March 1, 2001.
Cinema I and II recently installed
digital projectors, making it, according
to manager Larry Jarvis, one of
the only two-screen theaters around
to be current on recent technology.
“It’s the only one I know that has
it,” he said.
Cinema I and II, owned by
Carmike Cinemas, who according to
Jarvis, is dedicated to putting digital
projectors in all their movie theaters,
moved from 35-millimeter film projectors
to digital about three weeks
The comfort of
a blanket
By Nathan Woodside
According to John
Reinert, clinical supervisor
of North Central
Behavioral Health
Systems, Macomb, a
blanket can bring feelings
of comfort and safety.
“Usually when we’re
trying to get somebody to
feel safe, we’ll ask them
to call on memories of
safety, and a lot of times,
that’s a quiet, soft, warm
place,” he said. “A blanket
could be those
things.”
Reinert said children
could associate a blanket
with the safety of home.
“Frequently when children
are removed from
their environment, like an
adoption or in a crisis situation
like Hurricane
Katrina, it’s very important
for children to have
some semblance of
home with them,” he
said. “It reminds them of
a better place, a quiet,
safe place.”
ago.
“(Carmike Cinemas is) one of the
companies leading the pack in that
technology,” Jarvis said.
The move, Jarvis added, allows
managers to spend more time on
“the floor” or helping customers
rather than being in the movie booth.
“Once you press start, you don’t
have to worry about it,” he said.
“They make running the theater
much easier.”
Also, the quality of the projection
has increased, Jarvis said. Often film
would get scratched after repeated
showings.
Rita Brummett displays just a few of the many blankets
the McDonough/Hancock County Chapter of
Project Linus has made.
donated materials.
“We don’t have any
expense involved since
we run entirely on donations,”
Brummett said. “I
have people bring in fabric
and yarn all the time,
Cinema I and II jumps on technology bandwagon
“The image looks just as good the
first time it’s played to the last time
it’s played,” Jarvis said. “The (movie)
is much sharper, it’s always in focus
and always in frame.”
Digital projectors are “the latest”
technology available.
“They’re so new, there’s no ...
directions for how to use them,”
Jarvis said.
Behind the scenes, the theater is
still ironing out the kinks.
However, the struggles are unbeknownst
to the audience.
“We haven’t missed any shows or
any show times,” Jarvis said.
Industry Village Board
continues park planning
By JENNIFER DAVIS
Eagle Correspondent
The veteran’s memorial park, which was proposed
to be named Industry Memorial Park, was first on the
agenda at the Industry Village Board meeting
Wednesday, Nov. 7.
The initial construction plans and drawing of the
memorial was presented to board members. Two or
three line bricks will be laid in the formation of an “I”
for Industry. Anyone in the surrounding community
may purchase a brick with a loved one’s name.
Each name will be researched to make sure the veteran
had an honorable discharge from the service.
Blank bricks will be used as fillers until all bricks are
purchased. They will be purchased from India and
will take four months to arrive from the time they are
ordered.
Landscaping will include two large floodlights,
which will light three flags behind the memorial. A
walkway will be built in the back for foot traffic. A
tree near the flags will need to be removed because of
sap that will damage the flags and the memorial.
Construction is set to begin in the spring with a
dedication planned on Veteran’s Day 2008.
The village board agreed to remove the tree at the
site.
In other business:
• Abandoned properties in Industry were briefly
discussed. Village Clerk Ruth Harrison said one suggestion
is to sign such properties over to the village to
be sold.
• Semi-truck parking on private property was also
discussed. The weight of a large rig sinks sidewalks
over time and can cause water damage to yards.
Permission has been granted to park on private
property because there is a city ordinance against
parking rigs on the street but current sidewalk damage
must be resolved by the board.
Get ready for the holiday
season as the
Macomb Community
Theatre (MCT) presents
its take on “A Christmas
Story.” Based on the timeless
holiday film, this
comedy will bring laughter
and smiles to every
audience member. All
will reminisce the good
old times of Ralphie and
his quest for the perfect
Christmas present.
Of course, everyone
seems to love the film
and how can you miss
the its 24-hour marathon
on television during
Christmas Eve.
Travis Gage is the
adult Ralph Parker and
provides the main narration
about a Christmas in
1940. He observes himself
as 9-year-old Ralphie,
portrayed by Brady
Smith.
In Homan, Ind., all
Ralphie wants for
Christmas is a Red Ryder
BB gun. His parents,
Santa and even his
teacher band together and
Ralphie’s dreams are
instantly shot down when
he consistently hears the
most commonly-used
phrase, “You’ll shoot your
eye out.”
Rachel Smith as
“mother” and Brian Clark
as “the old man” are
included in the cast.
Debuting at MCT, Smith
should do a magnificent
job while Clark will
undoubtedly give a stellar
performance that
makes your funny bone
tickle.
JoEllen Pensinger also
serves up a delicious take
on the stern schoolteacher,
Miss Shields, creating
a character reminiscent
of The Wicked Witch
of the West.
Silliness and laughter
round out a perfect night.
Aspects from the film are
around every corner,
including Easter bunny
pajamas and the repulsive
fishnet stocking leg lamp.
One of the most
famous scenes, the risky
dare in which Flick’s
tongue gets stuck to a
pole, is also included.
This classic moment is
unforgettable and should
provide some giggles.
The film’s narration by
Jean Shepard is transposed
into the thoughts
of the adult Ralph, which
is the appealing aspect of
th play.
The narrating character
is similar to the stage
manager in “Our Town.”
Director Lori Botts has
chosen to divide the
parts, adding more people
into the casting mix
and allotting for various
in-depth characterizations.
The other characters
in the play do not
actually see the narrator
but he breaks the wall to
help set up the stories for
the audience.
acting.
New British sitcom
added to WMEC-
TV/PBS lineup
WMEC-TV, Macomb’s PBS station, carries a
number of British sitcoms, including “My Hero”
and “Last of the Summer Wine,” the world’s
longest running sitcom. With the latest addition,
“May to December,” British sitcoms can now be
seen Monday through Thursday and Saturdays.
“May to December” is a gentle situation comedy
concerning a relationship that crosses the generation
gap. It tells the story of Alec Callender, a widowed
solicitor in his 50s and Zoe Angell, a teacher
some 27 years his junior.
Alec has a typically suburban legal practice but
privately he wishes he were more like his hero,
Perry Mason. One day, into his life walks an angel,
Zoe, who has come to consult him about a divorce.
On the face of it, an aging widower and a 27-yearold
physical education teacher should have nothing
in common. But a mutual love of old musicals
and a whimsical sense of humor spark a romance
which surprises not just Alec and Zoe but also the
entire office staff, his two grown-up children and
the rest of their families and friends.
Alec and Zoe fall deeply in love despite seemingly
endless pitfalls. Can Perry offer Alec any
advice on how to handle an independent career
woman of the ‘90s If not, there is plenty of conflicting
advice from everyone else. “May to
December” is a charming character-driven series
that also happens to be funny.
“May to December” can be seen Saturdays at
9:30 p.m. and Mondays at 11:30 p.m., on WMEC-
TV/PBS in Macomb.
WMEC in Macomb, WQEC in Quincy and WSEC
in Springfield and Jacksonville are all part of
Network Knowledge, which provides quality public
television and educational services through a
DVD Review
Watch ‘SiCKO’ and
call me in the morning
By EVERETT CRAVEN
Eagle Staff
Controversial director Michael Moore’s latest documentary
“SiCKO” is a film everyone should watch,
especially if you ever plan on voting.
The health care system in America is already and
will continue to be a central issue of the 2008 presidential
campaign. “SiCKO” may be responsible in no
small part for the renewed interest in this issue that
affects all Americans.
America has a broken health care system. Anyone
who looks at the data can see it. We are spending more
than anyone on health care but we are not seeing the
returns one would expect from such an expenditure of
treasure. But just looking at the data - our lousy infant
mortality rate, life expectancy and cancer survival
rates - will not typically move you. The facts can reach
the analytical side of your brain but it takes a real talent
like Moore to find a presentation that can stir your
soul.
“SiCKO” is, by far, the single best film I’ve seen this
year.
Moore, untrue to form, avoids the strictly polemical
aspects of his previous blockbusters (“Fahrenheit
9/11,” “Bowling For Columbine”) and focuses on the
human, the slice of life and the anecdotal. “SiCKO” is
comprised mostly of testimonials of personal experience.
Much of them are experiences with our system
but the most compelling aspects of this movie are the
stories of people’s experiences with other health care
systems abroad.
In the film we visit Canada, Great Britain, France
and, finally, Cuba to see how those countries have
managed to guarantee universal health care despite
their “apparent” economic inferiority to the United
States. The most revealing scenes show the faces of
foreigners responding to Moore’s questions of “and
how much does a patient have to pay for that” with
smiles, laughter and responses that amount to basically
the same thing: “Are you kidding It’s free.”
Of course their health care isn’t free. It’s paid for
with higher taxes. But who wouldn’t gladly pay a
higher tax rate for guaranteed coverage I most certainly
would. I essentially do already. It’s called a premium.
This film is incredibly moving. When I wasn’t infuriated
at the greed and lack of compassion inherent in
the American health care model, I was occasionally, I
might add, moved to tears - movies make me cry more
than real life. There is a particularly wrenching scene
of solidarity between a firefighting squad in Havana,
Cuba and a few people who developed severe health
conditions from working at Ground Zero.
If you have heard over and over about the supposed
evils of socialized medicine - “red meat” at GOP
debates - you are gently encouraged to rent this DVD.
If you are familiar with Moore’s previous movies or
his reputation, don’t assume you know what this
movie will be like. It is unlike his other movies in very
good ways.
I whole-heartedly recommend this movie to everyone.
DVD Recommendations
By LE ALEXANDER
Eagle Correspondent
Top Recommendation:
In the ultimate numbers game, 13 versus one is a
reoccurring theme in “Ocean’s Thirteen.” This fastpaced
action film puts audience members at the edge
of their seats in anticipation of Danny Ocean’s next
move.
The third installment of Steven Soderbergh’s super
slick heist brings the return of Ocean (George
Clooney) and his entourage to pull off yet another celebrated
caper. One of the original 11, Reuben Tishkoff
(Elliott Gould), is in a coma and his fantasy of becoming
one of the biggest businessmen on the Vegas
strip is interrupted when Willie Bank (Al Pacino) takes
all of Reuben’s money in order to conquer the area.
The crew comes together to take down Bank and triumph.
Although the storyline becomes more complicated,
this version is better than the sequel but not as good
as the original. While it has the heart-racing and hairrising
action, there are moments where a lack of tension
is created, though the momentum continues to
accelerate at an exciting pace.
Clooney and Brad Pitt maintain their usual chemistry
and highlight a majority of the film. Perhaps one
of the downfalls, though, is without a powerful actress
like Julia Roberts, the film is male-heavy.
Also starring Matt Damon, Al Pacino, Casey Affleck
and Bernie Mac; PG-13.
Other releases:
• “Shrek The Third,” starring the voices of Mike
Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy; PG.
• “Amazing Grace,” starring Ioan Gruffudd, Albert
Finney and Michael Gambon; PG.
• “Urban Justice,” starring Steven Seagal and
Eddie Griffin; R.
Nationally-known
musicians Bob Bovee and
Gail Heil will bring their
wide repertoire of old
time country music to the
Hickory Ridge
Coffeehouse Concert
Series on Saturday, Nov.
17 at 7:30 p.m.
Performing on guitar,
banjo, harmonica and fiddle,
this award-winning
duo combines square
dance tunes, cowboy
songs, blues, ragtime,
novelty numbers and
yodels into an engaging
evening of old time fun.
Since 1980 Bovee and
Heil have traveled the
country together, taking
old time music to audiences
of all ages at festivals,
fairs, concerts,
dances, schools, libraries,
music camps and radio
and TV programs. This is
rural music as played in
homes, at dances and for
earlier entertainments,
such as minstrel shows
and country radio.
Originally from
Nebraska, Bovee has
been performing since
1970. Heil was born in St.
Louis and has been playing
since 1976 but they
make their home in
southeastern Minnesota.
They are as much musical
historians as performers,
presenting the early
development of country
music from the 1850s to
the 1940s in a lively toetapping
show.
The Dickson Mounds
gift shop will be open
before the performance
begins and during the
break.
Top Nine Reasons (and one challenge)
to SHOP LOCAL FIRST:
“Every time you spend money, you're casting a vote for the kind of world you want.”
- Anna Lappe, O Magazine, June 2003
1. Local Decision-Making -
Shopping locally gives you, the
consumer, the opportunity to
shape our community and its
growth.
2. Keeping Dollars in the
Local Economy - Shopping locally
recycles a much larger share of
money back into the local economy,
enriching the whole community.
3. Community Well-Being -
Shopping locally builds strong
communities by sustaining a
vibrant business climate, linking
neighbors in a web of economic
and social relationships, and contributing
to local causes.
4. Job Creation - Shopping
locally creates more jobs in the
community.
5. Charitable Organizations
Receive Greater Local Support –
7. Reduced Environmental
Impact – Shopping locally helps
sustain vibrant, walkable shopping
more money spent locally, the
more that businesses can reinvest
9. Sales Tax regeneration –
The more times your dollars can
the greater impact it will have on
our community’s sales-tax base.
Sales tax that is generated within
our community creates a
“New Tools for a New
the Wednesday, Nov. 14
Geography Awareness
Week presentation on computer-based
tools.
Richard Klosterman,
professor emeritus of planning,
geography and urban
studies at the University of
Akron, will deliver the
presentation at 7:30 p.m. in
McDonough County This Week, Macomb, Illinois
Monday, November 12, 2007
Every year more
and more people
have volunteered
their time and financial
resources to the
Project Santa
Program and every
year we need every
bit of these expressions
of generosity,”
WIRC Executive
Director Suzan Nash.
Morgan Hall 109.
Klosterman will discuss
the evolution of planners’
conceptions of their professional
roles over the last 20
years and the role GISbased
planning support
systems (PSS) can play in
new conceptions of community-based
planning.
Klosterman, who is also
the president and CEO of
“It’s all in the magic
and you made it for
us,” read the thank you
card from a mother
whose family participated
in the Project
Santa Program.
After 24 years, the
Project Santa Program
continues to bring a
happy holiday to families
in Hancock,
Henderson,
McDonough and
Warren counties.
“Every year more
and more people have
volunteered their time
and financial resources
to the Project Santa
Program and every year we need
every bit of these expressions of generosity,”
said WIRC Executive
Director Suzan Nash.
Last year the program served a
record 165 households and 404 children
and distributed over 2,000 gifts,
including winter coats, mittens and
hats and food baskets. In the recent
past, an increase in the need for food
by the elderly necessitated the program
expansion to
include food baskets
for the homebound.
Many of the families
enrolled in the program
live below the
poverty level and
struggle to provide the
basic necessities for
their families much less
provide a happy holiday
for their children -
thus, many families go
without. The program
strives to help these
families during the holiday
season.
Individuals, organizations,
community
groups, churches and
businesses have stepped forward with
monetary donations, sponsored a
child or family, donated wrapping
paper and the time to wrap some of
the thousands of gifts distributed each
year or made donations on behalf of a
friend or loved one. This year the
need for donations such as these is no
less important and just as urgent.
Blankets
so we hardly ever have to
buy anything.”
The chapter receives
many of their materials
from private donors and
yarn drives held by the
Boy Scouts, church youth
groups and other organizations.
The McDonough
County State’s Attorney’s
office is just one of the
several local blanket distributors.
“Here at the state’s
attorney’s office, we have
the Child Advocacy
Program,” Sarah Baca
said. “Whenever a child
has been physically
abused, we have an interview
process. After the
interview is all done, the
kid can go in and get a
special blanket that Rita
made. That kind of makes
them feel better after the
stressful interview they
went through.”
Baca, a professional
child advocate, said she
could see a positive
change in a child immediately
upon receiving a
blanket.
“They’re excited about
using it and taking it
home,” she said. “All the
kids that have been over
there that I’ve seen have
appreciated it. It’s just a
comfort thing, I think. It’s
something they can take
home and just have.”
Linda Oprian,
Birthright of Macomb codirector,
has also seen the
impact a new warm blanket
can have on a child.
“We are very grateful
for the blankets they make
for us and we put them to
good use,” she said.
Birthright wraps baby
necessities in the blankets
“stork-style” and takes
them to the hospital for
new mothers.
“The babies get
attached to blankets very
easily, just like Linus in
the cartoon,” Oprian said.
“You know that that blanket
is going to be a
favorite of that child as he
grows. It’s a very worthwhile
project and we are
very pleased that they’ve
chosen us as one of the
organizations that they
give to. We’re glad that
we can be a part of passing
on their good word.”
Birthright also distributes
blankets out of the
office to needy moms.
“The mothers are just
thrilled,” she said.
In addition to her local
contributions, Brummett
does what she can to
reach out beyond
McDonough and Hancock
counties.
Last April when a
house fire took the lives of
five children in Quincy,
Brummett personally took
50 blankets to the victims’
elementary school.
“I knew that there wasn’t
a Project Linus group
in Quincy, so I contacted
the school counselors and
asked them if I could
bring the blankets down,”
she said.
Brummett got the
opportunity to personally
present the blankets to the
students. Because most of
her blankets are distributed
by local child advocacy
facilities, being there
in person was a fulfilling
emotion she rarely gets to
experience.
“It was really awesome,”
Brummett said.
“When I went in, they
said ‘Oh, we’ve been waiting
for you.’ They just
Continued from Page 1
welcomed me with open
arms.”
The Blanketeers have
also sent blankets to victims
of Hurricane Katrina
and refugees of the recent
California wildfires.
Brummett is always
looking for more volunteers
to help make blankets.
“One of the good
things about it is that you
can do it out of the comfort
of your home,” she
said. “You’re not required
to attend meetings, pay
dues or meet a certain
quota.”
In her search for volunteers,
Brummett has
found help in some unexpected
places. A women’s
sewing class at the Mt.
Pleasant, Iowa
Correctional Facility made
and donated 60 blankets
toward her cause.
“I took them a lot of
the yarn that we had
donated and some fabric,”
she said. “What was really
Newspapers sue IHSA
for free press rights
The Illinois Press Association (IPA) recently filed a
lawsuit against the Illinois High School Association
(IHSA) in an effort to overturn a rule that limits access
to school sporting events and the use of photos taken
at those events.
According to the lawsuit, the IHSA has contracted
with Visual Image Photography Inc. for “exclusive and
unlimited access to IHSA tournament locations and
photo opportunities.” At the same time, as a condition
of receiving a media pass, newspapers are required to
sign an agreement limiting their own access and the
“secondary use” of photos not printed in the traditional
newspaper.
“We have voiced our opposition to the IHSA but
they have declined to accommodate the press in a free
and fair manner,” said David L. Bennett, IPA executive
director. “We can no longer sit on the bench on this.”
The IPA is seeking a temporary restraining order
against implementing the IHSA rules and other relief.
The Northwest Herald, Crystal Lake, and The State
Journal-Register, Springfield, joined the IPA in the lawsuit.
Sue Schmitt, The State Journal-Register publisher,
noted her staff frequently uses photos not published in
the newspaper on the SJ-R’s Web site and makes photos
available to the public.
“Our readers want copies of these photos and presentations
because they want to hold onto the memory
of their sons, their daughters, nieces, nephews, grandchildren,
friends or teammates in action, Schmitt said.
“The idea that access could be denied to our photographers
if we refuse to seek the sanction of a quasi-governmental
body to use our own work is unacceptable.”
The IHSA rules limit Internet broadcast of games to
“regularly scheduled” newscasts not to exceed 30 seconds
per clip nor two minutes of total game time within
any one-hour period without the consent of the
IHSA. Highlights cannot be used for any purpose two
days following the event. Photos published in the traditional
newspaper apparently aren’t subject to restriction.
All unused photos are subject to IHSA control,
according to the terms of the media pass agreement for
state tournaments.
According to the lawsuit, using photos is considered
“secondary use” which IHSA Executive Director
Martin Hickman has said is any use other than in a
traditional newspaper story. Such requirements
amount to prior restraint of the media’s free press
rights, the lawsuit claims. Allowing a private party to
have unfettered access while limiting the press is
another example of prior restraint. It also violates the
state’s “equal protection” clause of the Illinois
Constitution, according to the lawsuit.
“After a century of supporting and promoting local
school sports, newspapers have helped develop a market
that the IHSA now wants for itself,” Bennett said.
“We believe what they’re doing is unlawful.”
While membership in the IHSA is voluntary, public
schools provide 85 percent of its membership. The IPA
asserts in its lawsuit that “the overwhelming public
character of IHSA membership is sufficient to confer
state action for the application of constitutional protections
of a free press and equal protection.”
“The commercial interest in school sports is small
for individual newspapers,” Schmitt said. “But collectively,
the commercial interest could be very large for
the IHSA. This is about money for the IHSA.”
Blood drive to honor Emma Bozarth
Emma Bozarth and
her family invite the
community to donate
blood at a special drive
in her honor. She has
common variable
immunodeficiency, an
inherited condition
whereby the immune
system does not function
correctly.
“Not only do we
want to raise awareness
about primary immune
deficiency but we also
want to encourage
blood donation among
our community members,”
Bozarth’s mother
said.
The drive is hosted
by the Mississippi
Valley Regional Blood
Center and will be held
from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.,
Saturday, Nov. 17 at the
Macomb Donor Center,
1520 W. Jackson St.
Primary immune
deficiency is a group of
genetic, lifelong
immune system disorders
that make the body
unable to protect itself
from germs and
includes common variable
immunodeficiency,
which Bozarth has. The
condition makes her
vulnerable to serious
and potentially lifethreatening
infections.
By the time she was a
toddler, Bozarth logged
more time in hospitals
than many people do in
a lifetime. She tries to
live as normal a life as
possible as she faces
frustrations and fears of
ongoing medical conditions.
At 11, she has written
her second book. “The
ABCs of Kids Like Me”
provides a positive outlook
for other children
with chronic diseases.
Advances in medicine
can help immune deficiency
patients with regular
infusions of intravenous
immunoglobulin,
which is made with
plasma. These treatments
allow most
patients to lead more
normal lives because of
a reduced risk of infections.
Bozarth’s mom
also has the same disease
as well as her
grandmother.
Mississippi Valley
Regional Blood Center
regularly provides
immunoglobulin to
requesting system hospitals
in support of
immune deficiency
patients.
Blood donation is a
safe, simple procedure
that only takes about an
hour.
Donors must be at
least 17 years old, or 16
with parental permission,
be in good health
and weigh 110 pounds.
Diabetics and persons
with high blood pressure
are acceptable. A blood
donor card or other
photo I.D. is required to
donate.
For more information
and to schedule a donation
appointment, call 1-
800-747-5401 or log on to
www.bloodcenter.org.
Congratulations on your new
building and business endeavor.

WIRC-CAA food pantry receives
donation from All Greek Can Drive
Approximately 1,000
pounds of canned goods
were donated to the
Western Illinois Regional
Council-Community
Action Agency (WIRC-
CAA) food pantry by
members of 29 Greek
communities at WIU.
The All Greek Can
Drive 2007 was an initiative
to fill the cupboards
of people in need and to
show the Greek community’s
commitment to
Macomb.
“It is a large donation
such as this that helps
the WIRC-CAA food
pantry maintain its level
of assistance to those in
need,” said pantry coordinator
Nancy Walker.
Each month, the WIRC-
CAA pantry provides
food to several hundred
families and the elderly
in Hancock, Henderson,
McDonough and Warren
counties.
Due to a limited
budget and an increase
in demand, the food
pantry welcomes donations,
including canned
fruits and vegetables,
pasta, spaghetti sauce
and breakfast cereal.
Food is accepted at
WIRC-CAA, 223 S.
Randolph, Macomb.
Gil Belles, McDonough County Historical Society
president, (left), presents Gordana Rezab with her
award from the Community Quality of Life
Advisory Committee.
Rezab presented
CQLAC award
Gordana and the late Donald Rezab, both professors
emeritus from WIU, were among the recipients of
the 2007 awards from the Community Quality of Life
(CQLAC) Advisory Committee. They were named for
their untiring efforts to preserve the historical integrity
of the Old Macomb Cemetery.
Gordana was out of town on the day of the awards
presentation. CQLAC Chairman Al Goldfarb, WIU
president, deputized Gil Belles, McDonough County
Historical Society president, to present Gordana with
her award when she returned to Macomb.
Don and Gordana donated the land immediately
south of the cemetery to the WIU Foundation with the
stipulation the land be developed to enhance and dignify
the cemetery and at the same time protect it from
degrading commercial development.
Belles read her nomination written by Kathleen
Balderson at the ceremony held at the Western Illinois
Museum. Gordana and Belles stood in front of the former
Lark Theater billboard case and beneath decorative
terra cotta art from the Lark Theater. These artifacts
were saved by Don Rezab and were included in
the construction of the new museum in 2001.
Our water system recently violated a drinking water standard. Although this is not an emergency, as our
customers, you have a right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct this
situation.
We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants. Testing results we received on October 9,
2007 show that our system exceeds the standard, or maximum contaminant level (MCL), for total trihalomethanes
(TTHMs). The standard for TTHMs is 80 micrograms per liter (ug/L). The City’s average level of TTHMs over the
last year was 82 mircograms per liter.
What should I do
• You do not need to use an alternative (e.g., bottled) water supply. However, if you have specific
health concerns, consult your doctor.
What does this mean
This is not an immediate risk. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. However, some people who
drink water containing trihalomethanes in excess of the MCL over many years may experience problems with their liver,
kidneys, or central nervous systems, and may have an increased risk of getting cancer.
What happened What is being done
Trihalomethanes are formed when free chlorine and natural organics combine. The longer the two components
react with one another the more trihalomethanes form. The City has started a flushing program, reduced levels of
free chlorine, and made adjustments to water tower water levels as a way to reduce water age throughout the
system. We feel these measures will reduce the amount of trihalomethanes to an acceptable level. It is
anticipated that the issue will be resolved within the 4 th quarter of 2007.
For more information, please contact Jim Bessler, Utilities Manager, at 309-833-2821 or Clinton Hill the Water
Treatment Plant Supervisor, at 309-836-3916. Or by mail at 232 East Jackson, Macomb IL. 61455.
Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have
received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses).
You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.
