tHE aspire gala Each year, the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation hosts a one-of-a-kind annual gala. The event honors leaders from the fields of sports, entertainment, and business. This year’s Aspire Gala will continue a tradition of honoring those who are truly making a difference in the lives of others. The evening includes a lively cocktail reception, silent auction, dinner, and program. The 2013 Aspire Gala Co-Chairs are R. Todd Ruppert, John Ryan, and Haywood Talcove. FOUNDATION The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, working throughout the country with Boys & Girls Clubs, P.A.L. centers, schools, and other youth serving organizations to serve at-risk children in America’s most distressed communities. Founded in 2001, the Foundation is led by former Major League Baseball greats, Cal Ripken, Jr. and Bill Ripken, and was named in memory of their father. The Foundation honors Cal, Sr.’s legacy and his philosophy that “everything you do in baseball you do in life, and everything you do in life you do in baseball.” Quite simply, the life lessons of leadership, teamwork, sportsmanship, and a strong work ethic are keys to success for all young people, especially those living in disadvantaged circumstances. The Foundation partners with community based organizations and law enforcement to provide resources, training, equipment, a character education curriculum, and on-site program support to help kids learn these life lessons and reach their potential.
MUHAMMAD AND LONNIE ALI 2013 honorees As one of the most iconic athletes of our time, world-class boxer Muhammad Ali leverages his fame in the most generous of ways. Muhammad Ali became the first person in history to win the heavyweight champion title three times. Most recently, Muhammad lent his name in support of the Hope for Haiti Now telethon, raising millions of dollars for desperate victims of that disaster. As testament to his work in developing nations, the United Nations named him a Messenger of Peace, and he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, as well as Amnesty International’s Lifetime Achievement Award. He is devoted to helping charities at home including soup kitchens, hospitals, the Make-A-Wish-Foundation, and the Special Olympics. Each year, he hosts Celebrity Fight Night, an auction and gala which has generated more than $60 million for charity. In 1997, he established the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center and Movement Disorders Clinic at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix to bring hope, comfort, and treatments to patients and their families. Upon marrying Muhammad in November 1986, Lonnie began to assume responsibility for the coordination and eventual management of his business affairs. In September of 1992 she formally incorporated G.O.A.T., Inc. to centralize and license her husband’s intellectual properties for commercial purposes. She served as Vice President of G.O.A.T. from 1992 until the sale of the company in April 2006. Lonnie currently serves as Vice-Chair on the Board of Directors at the Muhammad Ali Center, a tribute to Muhammad’s accomplishments and the values that guide his life. The Center functions as a cultural attraction and international education center, infusing future generations from around the world. She and is a member of the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues. They have contributed substantially to the awareness and research efforts for Parkinson’s disease. She served on the Board of Directors of the Michael J. Fox Foundation and recently partnered with a major pharmaceutical company to launch a national campaign in support of Parkinson’s caregivers. She remains actively involved in various charitable and educational causes including being an advocate for children’s rights and Parkinson’s disease research.
