Carlisle Station Festival<br />

On Saturday we will be holding a station festival at<br />
Carlisle station from 10.00 – 16.00 <strong>the</strong>re will be various<br />
events taking place on <strong>the</strong> station.<br />
• A display of locomotives and diesel trains<br />
• A model railway display<br />
• Stands from <strong>the</strong> modern railway companies<br />
• Tours of <strong>the</strong> undercroft of <strong>the</strong> station –<br />
what is down <strong>the</strong>re<br />
• Stands from our local rail user groups who<br />
support <strong>the</strong>ir local railways<br />
• Stands telling <strong>the</strong> rich railway history of<br />
Cumbria<br />
• Entertainment<br />
• The regular hustle and bustle of Cumbria’s<br />
busiest station<br />
• A display of Community <strong>Rail</strong>way<br />
activities across <strong>the</strong> UK RAILWAY<br />
FESTIVAL WALK<br />

2009 represents a huge<br />
a fully guided walk around<br />
effort by many people in <strong>the</strong> Armathwaite. From <strong>the</strong> 1151<br />
railway industry to make this Carlisle-Armathwaite train,<br />
event a success. The<br />

record <strong>the</strong>ir thanks to all <strong>the</strong>se Carlisle on <strong>the</strong><br />
1311 train.<br />

THE COMMUNITY RAIL AWARDS are an annual event<br />
celebrating <strong>the</strong> very best of Community <strong>Rail</strong>. This event is<br />
run by <strong>the</strong> Association of Community <strong>Rail</strong> Partnerships<br />
(ACoRP) and will be held this year on <strong>the</strong> evening of<br />
25 September. To support this<br />
prestigious national event local people<br />
and visitors are invited to take part in<br />
a Festival celebrating our great scenic<br />
railways.<br />
THE SCENIC RAILWAYS OF CUMBRIA<br />
will be available throughout <strong>the</strong><br />
weekend to explore via our<br />
specially produced ticket - <strong>the</strong><br />
Cumbria Day Ranger which will be<br />
available for all points between<br />
Dumfries – Lockerbie –<br />
Haltwhistle – Skipton – Preston -<br />
Barrow. This great ticket,<br />
available for this weekend only<br />
at <strong>the</strong> bargain price of £24.00<br />
(normally £32.00), permits<br />
unlimited travel for one day<br />
within <strong>the</strong> area.<br />
OTHER RANGER FARES exist for<br />
shorter options and you may<br />
find that regular fares are<br />
not as expensive as you<br />
might think – particularly<br />
when offers such as Duo<br />
are available where two<br />
people travelling toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />
get on ticket at half price!<br />
Routes included:<br />
Carlisle - Dumfries – The route to South West Scotland from<br />
Cumbria rounding <strong>the</strong> head of <strong>the</strong> Solway at Gretna passing<br />
through Annan and on to Dumfries "Queen of <strong>the</strong> South".<br />
Tyne Valley / Hadrians Wall Country Line –<br />
to Haltwhistle where you can connect with <strong>the</strong> AD122<br />
Hadrians Wall bus service to<br />
access The Wall.<br />
Settle and Carlisle railway –<br />
<strong>the</strong> world renowned line<br />
across <strong>the</strong> “Roof of England”<br />
The West Coast Main Line –<br />
<strong>the</strong> most dramatic parts of <strong>the</strong><br />
journey from London to Glasgow<br />
over <strong>the</strong> once notorious Shap Fell<br />
and through <strong>the</strong> Lune Gorge.<br />
The Lakes Line from Oxenholme to<br />
Windermere – for Bowness and Lake<br />
Windermere itself. Forget <strong>the</strong> car and<br />
visit those tourist hot spots by rail and<br />
boat.<br />
The Cumbrian Coast <strong>Rail</strong>way – unknown to many<br />
but almost certainly <strong>the</strong> most spectacular Coastal railway<br />
in England – not forgetting “Ratty” our celebrated narrow<br />
gauge steam railway, just a few paces from <strong>the</strong> main line<br />
station.<br />
A Sunday service will operate for <strong>the</strong> first time<br />
for many years on this line on 27 September<br />
2009.<br />
The Furness Line – a spectacular ride along and<br />
across <strong>the</strong> fringes of Morecambe Bay taking you where<br />
cars can’t go!<br />
Not a Cumbrian railway but <strong>the</strong><br />
Leeds – Morecambe Line skirts <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn fringes<br />
of <strong>the</strong> county.<br />
Five of <strong>the</strong>se lines have active rail partnerships with results<br />
for all to see.
