Stela, a revolutionary
success at your doorstep
Stela is at the forefront of LED technology in public lighting.
Already numerous cities and villages have benefited from Indal’s
integral LED luminaire design approach REVOLED. Their large
scale confidence in Stela has made it a proven standard in
efficient LED public lighting.
Stela, its own identity for a new era
Take one glance at Stela and it becomes clear that it is something totally different from what we have been used to in
public lighting up to till now. Using LEDs for functional outdoor lighting provides luminaire designers with new opportunities
in design to beautify public spaces. The luminaire has become less the “packaging” of the lamp: light source and housing
are much better integrated in one clear design concept. The benefits of Stela are evident.
The cooling and light distribution concept REVOLED enables enormous energy savings and reduction of carbon footprints,
while meeting current lighting standards. The perfect cooling also gives an extended life time of the LEDs of more than 20
years (or 100,000 operating hours) and virtually eliminates maintenance. The resulting Total Cost of Ownership becomes
very attractive. Stela has its own unique identity designed for a new era in lighting. The range especially covers the
residential street and area applications and consists of the post top types Square and Wide, the post top / side entry Long
and the symmetrical round post top Round.
“After having evaluated
many luminaires, Stela
is the best and most
advanced LED lighting
solution in the market.”
Graham Scragg
Amey Constructing Company, United Kingdom
Case Study:
Birmingham and its successful
transition towards quality and
sustainable lighting
In five years, approximately 50% of the street
lighting in the city of Birmingham will be replaced
and all the residential areas will incorporate Stela
LED lighting totally remotely controlled. Management
and maintenance of their street lighting will be
done by means of a PFI (Private Financial Initiative)
assigned by the Town Hall to Amey, a UK public
service company in infrastructure and maintenance,
for the next 25 years.
Approximately 23,000 Stela’s will be installed in all
residential areas with traffic routes to follow.
“We deliberately took the challenge to start
with LED for residential street and area lighting,
as this is the biggest application area in public
lighting with the biggest savings potential for
public authorities.”
Wim Visser
Product Manager Road Lighting / Application Manager Infrastructure
According to Amey, the advantages of Stela are
numerous. Stela will reduce energy consumption
and carbon emissions significantly. The long life and
minimal maintenance requirements will cut operating
costs immediately. The fully dimmable Stela street
lights will provide good optical control, which
allows for both the reduction of light pollution and
obtrusive light. The city also expects a reduction
in the fear of crime as a result of the improved
illumination and excellent colour rendering.
Stela was specifically designed to utilise LEDs as
a light source, and there have been no failures in
the first few thousands luminaires installed by Amey
to date.
Advanced REVOLED
technology
LED Quality
Concerns aspects like lumen packages,
light colours, power consumption, life
time expectancy and lumen depreciation.
Thermal Management
Concerns aspects like thermal resistance
of the LEDs, inter distance of the LEDs in
the luminaire and heat dissipation from
the LEDs.
Optical Management
Concerns aspects like light output ratio,
light distributions and tilt options as well
as distribution reliability after incidental
individual LED failure.
Design Approach
Concerns the design of the luminaire for
optimal use of technical LED characteristics
in a dedicated new design concept
(REVOLED) or by backward engineering
where LED engines are installed in
existing luminaires (RETROLED).
In today’s LED application for residential street and area lighting the
aim is to light a certain area to the relevant lighting standard, at the
lowest possible energy consumption and operation costs, with an
acceptable lighting comfort and appearance. The LED choice itself,
the thermal integration into the luminaire, the optical system and the
overall design will define the outcome. REVOLED is an integral
design approach to come to the optimal balance between those
corner stones for each luminaire.
Indal | Stela 7

Advanced REVOLED technology
As luminaire functions vary, the weighing of those characteristics can be different per
luminaire concept. For Stela the REVOLED technology consists of the innovative and
efficient COO-LED cooling principle and the very effective DIRECTA lens technology,
in order to respond to the high social priority attached to energy saving and CO 2
reduction.
LED Quality
COO-LED
thermal management
For Stela high
performance High-
Power quality LEDs *
are used, realising up
to 140 “hot” lumens
@ 350mA per LED
in Cool White light
colour. Warmer light
colours at lower lumen output are also available:
Neutral White (up to 125 lumen) and Warm White
(up to 110 lumen).
By selecting (binning) LEDs with low power
consumption, combined with high efficiency
drivers, the total luminaire “system” power
consumption @ 350mA reaches 118 lumen/Watt.
Next to the high quality of the LEDs themselves,
the “hot” flux of the LEDs in Stela is high as a
result of the carefully chosen inter distance of
the LEDs and the efficient COO-LED cooling
technique.
* Selection of LEDs is under continuous development, please ask
your local Indal contact for the latest updates.
The performance of LEDs depends to a high degree on
the operating tempera ture. Therefore, optimum
cooling of the LEDs is necessary. COO-LED delivers
superior temperature control by combining low
current LEDs with a large cooling surface that is an
integral part of the luminaire housing. LEDs are
bonded directly to the outer skin of the luminaire,
eliminating any insulation in the heat dissipation
path. As a result the thermal loss of the original flux of the LEDs is around 2.5%
only, which ensures a high LED efficiency. The luminaire body is also designed to
ensure optimal drainage and cleaning of the luminaire.
By keeping the operating temperatures of the LEDs (T-junction) low, and driving
the LEDs at low currents, the expected life time of the LEDs is considerably
extended. In this way the light source will last for as long as the entire service
life time of the luminaire (normally 20-25 years, 100,000 operating hours), so there
is no need for any future lamp replacements.
The ambient temperature of the LED luminaires also has an effect on the operating
temperature of the LEDs (the lower the Tamb the higher the LED flux). Therefore, in
Stela the optimal Tamb-flux rate is selected at normal average (night) temperatures
for outdoor lighting.
DIRECTA
optical management
integral new
Design approach
The COO-LED method allows the LEDs to
produce the maximum amount of light.
An optical device is required subsequently
to direct the light. In Stela this is the
DIRECTA lens technology.
Conventional light sources use reflectors,
refractors or indirect optics to direct the
light. In addition a bowl is traditionally used to cover this optical system.
DIRECTA clear lenses are directly integrated into the luminaire housing, IP 66
protected, with no additional cover required. The result is high luminaire
efficiency (Light Output Ratio) of up to 92% (depending on the lens type).
That’s 10-25% more efficient than conventional lighting solutions.
LEDs are very small light sources, allowing the light to be directed very
accurately by means of lenses. In this way light spill (both upward light and
obtrusive light to the sides of the street/area) can be avoided. Thus even further
increasing the efficiency of the lighting installation and preventing light
pollution and glare at the same time.
Various lens types are available for different project geometries and functions.
Every indivi dual lens gives the same light distribution and unifor mity (overlay
method). Multiplication of LEDs increases the lighting levels. Because of this,
even in case of individual LED failure the light distribution will remain
unaffected and therefore conformity to standards is secured.
The Indal design team
opted for a clearly
individual character for
Stela: it is immediately
clear that it involved
something new.
The modern shapes,
from the rectangular
Square and Wide to the longitude Long and round
symmetrical Round, have serene, recognisable lines
and will therefore be at home in various environments.
This makes the Stela range extremely suitable as a
standard product for residential areas in particular,
where a certain timelessness is often essential,
especially when used on a large scale.
The slightly curved shape of the luminaire makes it
visible from a distance, without causing disturbing
glare. In this way it fulfils its orientation function.
Stela’s individual character also shows up well when
used to create more specific ambience in particular
places, such as boulevards, squares, parks, shopping
areas and around buildings.
