Dear Visitors:
We wanted to let you know about work that
may be under way during your visit to the
park today.
National Grid is rebuilding and upgrading
our electric system within, and adjacent
to, the Moreau Lake State Park. The work
being done here is a small piece of a larger,
33 mile project that runs from Rotterdam to
Spier Falls and is necessary to increase the
capacity and reliability of our power delivery
system for thousands of customers throughout
this region.
While we do not anticipate that this work
will interfere with hiking or other activities
you may have planned, we wanted to make
you aware of this necessary project.
Thank you for your patience.
Enjoy your day at the park.
Sincerely.
Questions and Answers about the Spier
Falls to Rotterdam 115kV Line Project
Q. What is the project
A. It is a new, 115 kv transmission line to run 33
miles from National Grid’s Rotterdam substation
to the Spier Falls substation, in addition to a 4.2
mile line in the town of Ballston. The new line will
be constructed adjacent to existing 115 kv lines
on National Grid’s existing right-of-way. By using
its existing right-of-way for the installation of the
new line, we have minimized the need to acquire
new property rights.
Q. Why is this project necessary
A. This project addresses the needs of the
growing upstate New York region by providing
additional electric capacity as well as improving
system reliability. It is part of our five-year plan
to improve infrastructure for customers across
upstate New York.
Q. How long will it take
A. We estimate the project will take place
between July 23rd 2012 and Spring 2013.
Q. Will the work restrict my access to any
areas of the park
A. We will be following existing rights-of-way.
Where some of the park’s hiking trails come near
to the project right-of-way, hikers may hear or see
nearby construction equipment and work activities.
Please stay on the park’s established hiking trails
and avoid coming close to construction work or
equipment.
While driving on public roads in or near the park,
please pay special attention to construction
signage or workers who may be directing traffic.
Q. Will you need to remove any trees in
the park as a part of this project
A. National Grid rights-of-way are generally
cleared to their full width consistent with legal
real estate rights and/or permits for initial
construction of the electric lines. The forested
landscape, beyond the maintained right-of-way,
may contain trees tall enough and close enough
to electric conductors to be capable of growing
or falling into the lines. We may prune or remove
these “danger trees” to reduce the risk of outages.
Q. How is National Grid ensuring
environmental compliance for this project
A. We have received the necessary permits
and approvals and are working closely with the
New York State Public Service Commission and
the US Army Corps of Engineers.
We hope this has answered your questions
about this project. For more information,
