CAMPFIRE
of the
CENTURY
Girl Scouts of Rhode Island
celebrated 100 years of Girl Scouting
at WaterFire on September 29th
Photo of the Luminarias at WaterFire
Greetings from the CEO
It’s difficult to believe, but when you receive this edition
of S’More News, 2012 will be drawing to a close. And what
a year it was! Governor Chafee and the RI state legislators
took the Year of the Girl pledge at the statehouse. Baby girls
born in March received tiny sashes and became members
of “Troop 2012”. Articles about the accomplishments
of the girls in our council were splashed across TV and
newspapers, including incredible coverage of our 100 Year
Anniversary in The Providence Journal. Busloads of girls
and alumnae joined their sister Girl Scouts in Washington,
DC for a huge centennial celebration. Girl Scout Gold
Award recipients were cheered on by previous generations,
including a Golden Eaglet recipient, at an inspiring
ceremony in June. We reconnected with more than 1,000
alumnae. And, finally, hundreds of proud and happy Girl
Scouts – past and present -- came together on a glorious
evening in late September to tell the world assembled at
WaterFire that Girl Scouts is here to stay as we begin a
second century of building girls of courage, confidence
and character. Somewhere in there, I also marked one year
of being the CEO of GSRI. From the bottom of my heart, I
thank you for your warm welcome. It’s clear we have lots of
work to do, lots of great ideas to implement! All to build a
new generation of girl leaders. So let’s get ready for the next
100 years of Girl Scouting.

I felt proud to celebrate a hundred years of
Girl Scouts at the WaterFire. My troop made
a conga line – we were singing songs and
everyone joined in singing and clapping for us.
- Bianca Iafrate, Troop 439
CAMPFIRE
of the
CENTURY
The WaterFire event brought long lost
friends together. Witnessing many of the old
traditions reminded me that "old" is not always
bad. - Lillian Wante Gervais (Pictured with
Alice Furtado (at left) who has been involved
in Girl Scouting for 45 years)
To me, Girl Scouts is my happy place.
No matter what stresses I face I always
know that I can count on my troop for
"Girl Scout Therapy". - Melissa Barbato,
Leader, Troop 498 (pictured)
Girl Scout means being a sister to
everyone. The WaterFire celebration was
a great way to celebrate the 100 years of
Girl Scouts. Watching all the flames light
up was such a beautiful sight and I think
Juliette Low was smiling down on us! It
was an honor to be part of Girl Scouts' 100
years! - Tia-Rose Earnest
As a co-leader, I have had the
opportunity to experience Girl
Scouting to the fullest as an
adult. My daughter and I were
proud to be part of the torch
lighting ceremony and to belong
to a great organization here in
Rhode Island! - Mirrah Feleciano,
Co-Leader, and Leilani Feleciano,
Ambassador, Providence Troop 47

For the WaterFire
celebration, the girls in
my troop dressed in
vintage GS uniforms
and roamed the streets
greeting people. We
passed out "I Love GS"
buttons. I am a better
person for being involved in
Scouting! - Tatum D., Troop 56
Rehoboth)
As a Lifetime Girl Scout, I cherish the time I
have spent in the Girl Scouts and as a counselor
at Camp Hoffman. I celebrated the 100th
at WaterFire with hopes for the future for
Girl Scouting. We lit a torch honoring Camp
Hoffman counselors, campers, and lasting
friendships. It was truly magical! - Lee-Ann
Hurtubise (Pictured: Lee-Ann Hurtubise
Girl Scouts has become a way of life
for our family. I was introduced to
Girl Scouts as a child. I volunteered
as my daughters' Brownie Leader –
we made it all the way to Gold Award!
Thirty years later, I still have a troop!
My husband, Bob, is an honorary Girl
Scout, he even sells cookies for the
troop. WaterFire was breathtaking,
what a way to go into the next
century! - Joanne & Bob Toppa
Frankenstorm, otherwise known as Hurricane Sandy, blew
through Camp Hoffman taking down and uprooting over 30
pine and oak trees. Luckily none of the buildings sustained
damage. It took GSRI Team Paul Bunyan (Dan, Kenny & Ernie)
an entire week to clear the roads to Wellville, the Log Cabin/
Ridge area and the paths to the dining hall. A few more weeks
with saws and axes and all will be good as new. Thank you guys!
Troop 852
heading to
Puerto Rico!
Troop 852 of North Kingstown/Jamestown has been together since Brownies. We are now a Senior/
Ambassador troop that continues to camp, participate in the community, and have fun. Over the
years, we’ve earned try-its, badges, and done interest projects, studio 2B charms, and Journeys.
We’ve earned both our Bronze and Silver Awards and expect to earn our Gold Award as well. When
we aren’t working on a project or badge, we like to hang out with each other by having Halloween
parties and going shopping around the holidays. We also participated in TREC, the 100th anniversary
of Girl Scouts and WaterFire. In 2009, we traveled to Washington D.C. and toured the area. There we
met Senator Jack Reed and went to many museums and monuments. We did lots of fundraising like
car washes, bake sales, and yard sales. We are continuing to do the same in preparation for our trip to
Puerto Rico. We decided to go to Puerto Rico because many of us are learning Spanish in school. We
wanted to go somewhere that was educational, but also fun. We also wanted to stay within the United
States because there was no passport necessary for many of our first time travelers. Puerto Rico will
allow us to exercise our knowledge of Spanish, learn about the different ecological features of the
area, and also let us relax on the beach. My troop consists of sophomores and juniors in high school.
In just a few more years we will be ending our role as scouts and beginning our role as adults in our
community. We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate but with a “BIG TRIP”!
What Can a Girl Do
The 2013 Girl Scouts of
> Rhode Island Cookie Sale Program
Girls can do anything when they put their minds to it, and the Girl Scout Cookie Sale can
teach them how! The Cookie Sale puts girls in control of their success and shows them
that they have the power to be a leader.
By being a part of the Cookie Sale, girls learn the 5 Key Skills—goal setting, decision
making, money management, people skills, and business ethics. These are all skills
they’ll use to sell cookies and in their future as a working adult.
When they open a business of their own someday, they’ll have the confidence to
succeed. When they take on an important job at a company, they’ll be prepared. And
when they manage their personal finances, they’ll know how to do it. After all, they’re
already part of the world’s largest girl-led business!
The Cookie Program has helped millions of girls develop the financial literacy skills
they need to grow into financially independent adults.
2013 Service Project: The Gabrielle
Dinsmore Heart and Hope Fund
Each year, the Girl Scouts of Rhode Island selects a local
organization to be the recipient of our council-wide service project. Girls/troops can
choose to donate a portion of their cookie sale proceeds to the organization. This is a
way for girls to give back to their community. The 2013 service project is the Gabrielle
Dinsmore Heart and Hope Fund, whose mission is to provide an environment where
kids with heart disease and congenital heart defects can have fun while learning life skills
that will help them navigate the challenges of living with cardiac conditions.
