Thomas Adès
The New York
Philharmonic: New
Music by Thomas Adès
Premiered by the New World
Symphony for the opening of Miami’s
Frank Gehry Hall in 2010, Adès’
Polaris was a co-commissioned with
the New York Philharmonic, Los
Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco
Symphony, the Gulbenkian Orchestra,
and London’s Barbican Centre. The
British-born composer has said
that Miami drew him to a “marine
theme,” since he associates that city
with the sea. “There is no program
as such, but the central idea of the
piece refers to the role of the North
Star as a navigational device that
guided sailors from time immemorial.”
Alan Gilbert conducts the New York
Philharmonic’s first performance.
