In 2003 we saw some exciting and innovative series introduced
with the aim of promoting and marketing racing within the
KZN region, namely the KZN Sires Series, the Gold Circle
Champions League and the Chapter Challenge Series. These
series have all been well received by owners, trainers and punters
and together with the stake increases are attracting bigger fields
and boosting turnovers, which begs the question: “Can you
afford not to race in KZN in 2004?” Don’t forget that the finals
of the third Chapter Challenge Series will be held at Clairwood
on Saturday, 20 December 2003 and will undoubtedly produce
some nail-biting racing.
The Board is currently reviewing facilities at Greyville and in
particular, the refurbishment of the members’ area which is
crucial not only to improve comfort and enhance our members’
race day experience but will add value to our business and meet
the long term vision that this area can be used for smaller type
exhibitions and as a conference facility on non-race days.
The stable employees’ scheme recently introduced whereby
trainers identify grooms who have the potential to become a
stable employee or assistant trainer is just one of the many
projects spearheading our transformation process.
With the Vodacom Durban July getting bigger and more successful
each year, we would like to remind members to get their restaurant
bookings in as early as possible. Parking and booking slips will
be sent out in February 2004. Don’t delay, get them filled in and
sent back to us because space as usual will be at a premium.
Remember that if your current subscriptions are not paid up,
your booking will not be considered. For further information

The Board would like to congratulate Mantotho Tshemese on
his great achievement of winning the KZN Groom of the Year
award. Mantotho works for trainer Dennis Drier and is the
groom for Rambo’s Jewel who recently won KZN Horse of the
Year.
Members, don’t forget our reciprocity agreement with Royal
Durban Golf Club whereby you can use Royal Durban’s facilities
and play golf at a reduced rate. In return, Royal Durban members
together with a guest have free access to all KZN
racecourses except on Vodacom Durban July and Canon
Gold Cup racedays and they may use our members’ facilities.
KZN is proud of its achievements and outstanding performances
during 2003 and the Board is fully aware that the successes of
the past could well be the Achilles heel of the future and are
therefore constantly re-adapting and re-inventing to meet the
ever-increasing challenges that lay ahead to bring even better
racing and entertainment to our province.
