A Success Story For The College Of Forest Resources<br />
The $2.5 million raised during fiscal year 2008 helped ensure excellence in our College, allowing us to support<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>and</strong> intellectual growth for the educators, researchers, <strong>and</strong> students in all <strong>of</strong> our programs. It helped<br />
make possible our continued <strong>and</strong> growing engagement with the public we serve <strong>and</strong> enhanced collaboration across<br />
the University <strong>of</strong> Washington campuses <strong>and</strong> with our cooperating partners in institutions, organizations, <strong>and</strong><br />
communities across the state, the nation, <strong>and</strong> the globe. We deeply appreciate your contributions <strong>and</strong> generous<br />
support during this remarkable campaign.<br />
Surpassing our $17.7 million campaign goal, the College raised $21<br />
million during Campaign UW: Creating Futures, a testimony to our more<br />
than 100-year legacy <strong>of</strong> philanthropy. Just as important as this monetary<br />
achievement is the growing awareness <strong>and</strong> support <strong>of</strong> the College’s role in<br />
sustaining our Northwest world <strong>and</strong> beyond. The outcomes we most value<br />
are an increased underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> the ecological, social, <strong>and</strong> economic<br />
bases for the sustainability <strong>of</strong> our planet’s resources <strong>and</strong> the work <strong>of</strong><br />
discovery <strong>and</strong> exploration to sustain these resources for future generations.<br />

Carbon Flux Measurement: Helping to Underst<strong>and</strong> the Global Carbon Cycle<br />
Generous gifts during fiscal year 2008 from the Brainerd,<br />
Kongsgaard-Goldman, Lazar, 444S, <strong>and</strong> Wilburforce<br />
Foundations, from Douglas <strong>and</strong> Margaret Walker, <strong>and</strong> from<br />
anonymous donors helped the Wind River Canopy Crane<br />
Facility (WRCCRF) update its carbon flux measurement<br />
instruments. These measurements play an important role in<br />
underst<strong>and</strong>ing the global carbon cycle <strong>and</strong> the role that oldgrowth<br />
forests play in climate change.<br />
Says WRCCRF manager Ken Bible, “Our current instruments<br />
are at the end <strong>of</strong> their lifespan. Given the importance <strong>of</strong><br />
underst<strong>and</strong>ing the role that natural forests play in the uptake<br />
<strong>and</strong> sequestration <strong>of</strong> carbon dioxide <strong>and</strong> how this relates to<br />
the global carbon cycle, we were grateful for donor funding<br />
to help us design <strong>and</strong> purchase new instruments.” The<br />
instruments planned for installation in spring 2009, continue<br />
the Eddy Covariance technique for continuous measurement<br />
<strong>of</strong> the carbon flux between a 500-year-old Douglas-firwestern<br />
hemlock old-growth forest <strong>and</strong> the atmosphere<br />
that has been in use at the crane for 12 years. The new<br />
system, however, will be one <strong>of</strong> the first installations <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Campbell Scientific Inc. (CSI) closed–path system, which<br />
continuously monitors its own health <strong>and</strong> calculates carbon<br />
dioxide exchange in near real time. This new system will allow<br />
researchers to focus on specific components <strong>of</strong> the carbon<br />
cycle like soil, woody debris, <strong>and</strong> leaves, resulting in a more<br />
accurate underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> forest ecosystem carbon dynamics.<br />
Says Bible, “We’d like to help answer an important question:<br />
Are old-growth forests in the Pacific Northwest continuing<br />
to accumulate carbon as a result <strong>of</strong> photosynthesis or are<br />
they net sources <strong>of</strong> atmospheric carbon dioxide as a result<br />
<strong>of</strong> tree death <strong>and</strong> decomposition processes The carbon flux<br />
data from Wind River will help identify the direction <strong>and</strong><br />
magnitude <strong>of</strong> changes associated with climatic warming.”<br />
Adds WRCCRF Director Jerry Franklin, “Our carbon flux<br />
measurements are widely available to scientists, policy<br />
makers, <strong>and</strong> citizens who are involved in developing climate<br />
change policies. This information is being used in developing<br />
<strong>and</strong> evaluating alternative roles for forests in national <strong>and</strong><br />
global carbon policies.”<br />
Located in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in southwest<br />
Washington, the Wind River Crane was erected in 1995 as a<br />
cooperative venture <strong>of</strong> the USDA Forest Service <strong>and</strong> the UW<br />
College <strong>of</strong> Forest Resources.

Taking Care <strong>of</strong> the Washington Park Arboretum<br />
Ruth Mary <strong>and</strong> Don Close’s generous gift <strong>of</strong> $200,000 to<br />
UW Botanic Gardens for support <strong>of</strong> maintenance in the<br />
Washington Park Arboretum continues a long-st<strong>and</strong>ing<br />
family tradition. Years ago, Ruth Mary’s parents, Clarence <strong>and</strong><br />
Marian Larsen, established an endowment to provide funding<br />
for the same purpose. In honor <strong>and</strong> memory <strong>of</strong> the Larsens,<br />
this gift will be added to her parents’ endowment. The Closes<br />
had been very active in the Arboretum Foundation — she<br />
was a long-time member <strong>of</strong> the editorial board <strong>and</strong> Don<br />
served as president. When asked why she chose to fund<br />
Arboretum maintenance, Ruth Mary said, “We were both<br />
avid gardeners, so we know how important proper care is.”<br />
The Arboretum’s nearly 4,600 kinds <strong>of</strong> plants, one <strong>of</strong> the<br />
premier woody plant collections in the U.S., are a tall order to<br />
take care <strong>of</strong>. Their maintenance <strong>and</strong> care is closely tied to the<br />
Arboretum’s mission <strong>of</strong> education, conservation, <strong>and</strong> display.<br />
Conservation includes management for insect <strong>and</strong> disease<br />
pests, weak <strong>and</strong> dead plant removal, hazard reduction,<br />
plant replacement, <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong>scape restoration. Employing<br />
a holistic approach to managing plant health, Arboretum<br />
gardeners <strong>and</strong> arborists combine the use <strong>of</strong> carefully timed,<br />
least toxic control applications, cultural practices to improve<br />
plant vigor, <strong>and</strong> the removal <strong>of</strong> severely affected plants. The<br />
challenges run the gamut from spruce aphid infestations to<br />
root rot diseases <strong>of</strong> large trees, <strong>and</strong> monitoring <strong>and</strong> follow-up<br />
evaluations are important management tools.<br />
In addition to managing plant health, UW Botanic Gardens<br />
grounds crews also install new trees in the Arboretum,<br />
from rare exotic species to beautiful local favorites. Some<br />
highlights from the 2007-2008 planting season included: two<br />
specimens <strong>of</strong> Keteleeria evelyniana, a rare evergreen from<br />
the mountains <strong>and</strong> river basins <strong>of</strong> southwest China; Malus<br />
‘Whitney’ (Whitney crabapple), developed by Seattle Mayor<br />
Greg Nickel’s great-great-great gr<strong>and</strong>father; Cedrus deodara<br />
‘Curly Locks,’a Deodar Cedar with distinctive curling branches;<br />
<strong>and</strong> Ilex aquifolium ‘Ferox Argentea’ (hedgehog English holly),<br />
an old cultivar that was first reported in Engl<strong>and</strong> in 1662.<br />
Gifts like the Larsen Endowment, which was established in<br />
1980 <strong>and</strong> strengthened by the generosity <strong>of</strong> Ruth Mary Close<br />
in 2008, will help ensure healthy <strong>and</strong> inspiring Arboretum<br />
plant collections well into the future.
