Overview<br />

As a <strong>Resident</strong> <strong>Advisor</strong> (RA), you are directly responsible for being a professional YoungArts<br />

Ambassador, communicating with and mentoring the YoungArts finalists pre-YoungArts Week, and<br />

for supervising and guiding the YoungArts Week participants through their week’s activities while<br />

monitoring their behavior and whereabouts at all times. YoungArts Week participants are selected<br />

from over 8,000 applicants that have applied to the program. Approximately 20 young artists from<br />

each discipline (Dance, Music, Jazz, Photography, Theatre, Visual Arts, Voice, Writing, and Cinematic<br />

Arts) are invited to Miami to participate in a week-long series of events which include live auditions,<br />

master classes, and enrichment and interdisciplinary activities. The Head <strong>Resident</strong> <strong>Advisor</strong> and<br />

his/her assistant will lead and coordinate all <strong>Resident</strong> <strong>Advisor</strong> activities.<br />

<strong>Job</strong> <strong>Description</strong><br />

• You are directly responsible for supervising and guiding the YoungArts Winners through<br />

designated activities<br />

• Your duties include monitoring Finalists’ behavior and whereabouts at all times<br />

• You must maintain a role of authority throughout the event. Staff depends on you to be able<br />

to handle situations that may arise and work together with staff on solutions<br />

• You will work with the YoungArts Artistic Programs Staff on any requests needed to create a<br />

positive environment for the attendees<br />

• You may assist with any load-in, installation, strike, or deinstallation needed for the program<br />

including workshop spaces, rehearsals, and master classes as needed<br />

• You will perform nightly bed checks for Finalists at curfew<br />

• You must attend a resident advisor meeting at the end of each night<br />

• You are required to be present and ready to work 15 minutes before any transfer<br />

• The Head <strong>Resident</strong> <strong>Advisor</strong> Team will lead and coordinate all <strong>Resident</strong> <strong>Advisor</strong> activities<br />

Professional Service and Conduct<br />

Confidentiality<br />

Please be aware that at all times you represent YoungArts and its programs. You must conduct<br />

yourself with utmost professionalism in your demeanor. As an RA you will be working with a diverse<br />

group of artists at various professional stages of their careers. Your role may bring you within close<br />

proximity of a local politician, a dignitary, patron, board member, or internationally acclaimed artist.<br />

This role requires patience and the ability to work with many different personalities under tight<br />

deadlines. Always remember to move forward with professionalism and respect for all.<br />

It is imperative that you are vigilant as to the safety of the young artists and report any suspicious<br />

activity to YoungArts Staff. Please keep your dialogue with the young artists at a professional level<br />

at all times. Never discuss any rankings or the opinion of the judges with the Finalists at any time.<br />

You are a liaison between YoungArts, the Panelists, the Discipline Coordinators, and the young<br />

artists. You should be impartial and professional with respect to this role at all times.


You will have access to information about teaching artists, panelists, finalists, and other important<br />

guests. You are not to share this information with anyone. You are not to give out any contact<br />

information without explicit consent. If anyone is asking for direct contact information you should<br />

direct them to call the YoungArts Headquarters.<br />

Alcohol<br />

There will be times and events during YoungArts Week when alcoholic beverages will be served.<br />

<strong>Resident</strong> <strong>Advisor</strong>s are not allowed to drink while on duty or in the presence of the young artists at<br />

any time. Remember that all the young artists are below the legal age to drink alcoholic beverages.<br />

Do not provide alcoholic beverages or any illegal substance to young artists.<br />

Attire<br />

While at YoungArts Week <strong>Resident</strong> <strong>Advisor</strong>s are allowed to dress casually except for evening events<br />

and the gala. All attendees should bring appropriate attire to attend all exhibitions/performances<br />

and our annual Gala.<br />

During YoungArts Week, <strong>Resident</strong> <strong>Advisor</strong>s should wear clothing that is comfortable and practical for<br />

work, but not distracting or offensive to others. Any clothing that has words, terms, or pictures that<br />

may be offensive to other attendees is unacceptable. Clothing that has the company logo is<br />

encouraged. Sports team, university, and fashion brand names on clothing are generally acceptable.<br />

Clothing that works well for the beach, yard work, dance clubs, exercise sessions, and sports contests<br />

are not appropriate for a YoungArts Week. Clothing that reveals too much cleavage, your back, your<br />

chest, your stomach or your underwear is not appropriate for YoungArts Week. Torn, dirty, or frayed<br />

clothing is unacceptable.<br />

Semi-formal and formal attire is acceptable for the Gala. For men, a dark suit is appropriate in the<br />

absence of a tuxedo. Women can wear a nice dress or pant suit if you do not own formal attire.<br />

Cell Phone Use<br />

You will need to have access and use a cell phone during YoungArts Week. If you do not have a cell<br />

phone, please advise YoungArts as soon as possible. If you do not already have an unlimited text plan<br />

it is the preference of YoungArts that you switch your plan to unlimited texting for the employment<br />

period. YoungArts will pay the difference in your bill if you do not usually subscribe to an unlimited<br />

plan.
