oethe’s enigmatic drama, Faust,<br />
might be described as a symbolic allegory<br />
of humanity’s way of evolution from<br />
primeval beginnings through all the<br />
earthly and unearthly forms of life’s<br />
experiences, toward Cosmic Unity, the ultimate purpose<br />
of Creation. Viewing Goethe’s works from the vantage<br />
point of a mystic, we find that his presentation of the<br />
medieval story of Dr. Faust is similar to the literature of<br />
the Quest: mankind’s search for a lost treasure which,<br />
when found, will endow us with a sacred power to cope<br />
with all adversities and attain the mastery of life. It is a<br />
search for guidance along the cosmic path which, as we<br />
know, demands the unceasing effort of expanding our<br />
consciousness of the world around us in many forms, both<br />
tangible and intangible.<br />
The same theme appears in ancient mythologies<br />
of Egypt and Greece; for instance, in the legends of Isis<br />
and Osiris, Orpheus and Eurydice, and especially in the<br />
Eleusinian Mysteries where Demeter, Mother of Earth, is<br />
