particular situation, urging us to behave in a particular<br />
way, is that in the long run it made the genes coding for<br />
it being passed on at a higher rate than any alternative<br />
genes; in other words, because it helped us survive and<br />
reproduce. The biological mechanisms making us into<br />
loving and generous human beings have been perfected<br />
over enormous lengths of time. I find it comforting that<br />

I would like to conclude with another anecdote<br />
where I clearly felt driven by these strong biological<br />
mechanisms. I was walking over the Christmas market<br />
with three colleagues. Suddenly an older lady<br />
approached us…, she seemed to want to ask<br />
something. It turned out that she needed some<br />
help with closing the heavy shutters of her<br />
wooden stall. Naturally the four of us helped her.<br />
While we were doing this I felt overwhelmed<br />
by the warm glow of love, togetherness and<br />
gratefulness; I was grateful that this stranger was<br />
giving us the opportunity to cooperate and help.<br />
It felt as if she had given me something rather<br />
than the other way round. I realised that this<br />
glow was no more and no less than the effect of<br />
hormones and neurotransmitters; this is how it<br />
feels, I thought, when these particular hormones<br />
and neurotransmitters are released in my body<br />
and brain; this is how it feels to be the subject<br />
experiencing this physiological state of affairs.<br />

physiological state of affairs being triggered in a<br />
