Quality
Integrity
Dignity
Community
Stewardship
We are a nonprofit, Christian organization of people who are driven by our
mission to enrich the lives of others, and in turn, enrich our own lives.
We believe in the power of the spirit — both human and divine. It is our
job to support that spirit and inspire others to lead healthier, happier lives.

WesleyLife’s Mission
Guided by Christian compassion, we support the independence, health and well-being of older adults
wherever they call home.
WesleyLife’s Core Values
At WesleyLife, we live our values in every decision we make. They guide our mission and help
illuminate our purpose:
• Quality — To provide superior service and high standards, which have always defined Wesley’s
distinctive reputation. To be the best we can; WesleyLife encourages new ideas, the freedom to
be creative and openly express thoughts.
• Integrity — To value and demonstrate honesty, ethics and fairness in everything we say and do.
• Dignity — To make a difference in lives by comforting, listening and treating everyone with
sincerity and admiration. We promote independence, provide choices and work to make every day
a special day for our residents.
• Community — To continually strive to create a home in the truest sense, where the spirit of
friendship, support and genuine respect among residents, families and staff runs deep.
We value the contributions of all individuals and do everything possible to help each other
grow and contribute.
• Stewardship — To have a faithful responsibility to our residents, families, staff and community,
and diligently use the resources with which we have been entrusted.

Wesleylife –
transforming
the idea of healthy aging
O
ver the past few years our organization has undergone an exciting transformation. Under
the careful guidance of our leadership and volunteer board members and with the valued input
of residents, clients and employees, we’ve made fundamental changes that will better position us
for the future.
One of the most outward changes is the evolution of our name from Wesley Retirement Services
to WesleyLife. We made the change to better reflect our customized services and commitment to helping
older adults live a fuller life no matter where they reside — in their lifelong home, or in one of our
residential communities.
This transformation is not about a name change or new sign on the door. It’s a philosophy of
how we operate, what partners we choose and which services we provide. This new philosophy allows
us to communicate the WesleyLife promise in a distinctive way — which in turn helps us to remain
financially-stable, expand our healthy aging services, recruit and retain experienced staff members, and
attract residents and clients who bring value to our organization through faith and friendship.
It’s a testament to our leadership’s fiscally responsible approach that WesleyLife weathered the
economic storm. Even during these challenging times, our organization had the ability to expand
our mission to serve older adults. This responsible growth is due to our focus on building a
strong foundation and truly understanding the needs of older adults in a community to
ensure our service offerings support their independence and health.
“ Our dedication to wellness and
innovative services ensures continued
success and expanded growth for
years to come.”
— Rob Kretzinger, President/CEO

• Transforming the way people view retirement communities, Edgewater — Iowa’s first active life
community opened in August to positive praise from new residents, West Des Moines city leaders and
local media. Our vision to create a community that offers older adults active lifestyle choices with
hospitality-driven amenities has become a reality. WesleyLife applied 60 years of learning and in-depth
understanding of the needs and interests of older adults to create an environment where people are
empowered to live an active retirement lifestyle that suits them. As of December 2009, 70 residents
now call Edgewater home — a number well ahead of forecasts.
• To strengthen our Iowa roots, WesleyLife engaged in discussions with Pella Regional Health Center
about adoption of three communities — Fair Haven East, Pella Manor and Jefferson Place. The leadership
team carefully analyzed the situation to determine if it was a good fit for our organization’s mission
and goals. It was also critically important to keep in mind the feelings of their current employees as well
as the individuals they serve. Positive dialogue continued throughout the fall and official ownership
transfer occurred on January 1, 2010.
• To continually evolve our services to meet the needs of older Iowans, Park Centre in Newton now
offers a state-of-the-art rehabilitation center. We recognized an unmet need in the community and
renovated our residential care area to create an energizing and comfortable place to regain strength
and recover. The on-site clinical specialists develop individualized plans to guide patients on the
path to recovery. Featuring private rooms, whirlpool baths and an on-site beauty shop and library —
patients can enjoy the comforts of home, while on the road to a speedy recovery.
There is no doubt that 2009 was a transformational year. Yet our core Christian mission —
to enhance lives with a focus on choice — remains a strong foundation for the future. Our special
emphasis on active lifestyles and innovative health and wellness programs ensures continued success
and expanded growth for years to come.
It’s a privilege to be part of an organization that embraces and promotes the concept of successful
aging. I’m confident that our work at WesleyLife will truly transform the idea of aging and define a new
standard for care and services throughout our industry.
Providing support and enriching lives
B
ecky Carter remembers the spring day in 2009 when she first met Jim
Butler — an assisted living resident at Halcyon House in Washington.
“He seemed a bit down,” said Becky, Wellness Director for Halcyon House.
“He was quiet and a little shy. He’d just moved in and wanted information
about our wellness program.”
Jim was struggling with the loss of his wife six years earlier. Becky visited
with him about an upcoming group exercise class. As they talked, Jim opened
up and told her about his other interests. He admitted that he really missed
working outdoors and gardening, and that he used to be an artist and created
beautiful handmade paper.
Becky made a mental note, and then invited Jim to try out a group class.
Soon, Becky started thinking about ways to get Jim involved with other
residents. She approached Jim about teaching a paper-making class for residents.
He reluctantly agreed to teach a class. He also started attending group exercise classes. Becky continued
to encourage him, and Jim became more involved in the community life. In December, Becky and other
staff members convinced him to exhibit his artwork at the annual Christmas and Craft Festival.
“He sold some of his pieces at the show and got rave reviews from everyone,” Becky said.
“He was just beaming.”
Rediscovering Life’s Pleasures
Now Jim’s playing cards on Wednesdays. He takes care of the flower gardens. He attends the loss
and grief support group, and the monthly book club. And he’s agreed to teach another paper-making
class. Although it may have started with Becky reaching out to support Jim, in the end it was Jim
reaching back to enrich the lives of all those around him. That’s how a WesleyLife community works.
“In the case of Jim, we all saw a person who needed a little extra support. So we gave it to him.
We’re always communicating with each other about our residents’ needs, and we’re always looking for
ways to bring purpose to their lives,” Becky said.
That aspect of her job is just as important as Becky’s official duties as Wellness Director. On
any given day, she may be teaching cardio fitness classes to residents, staff members or community
members. You can also find her driving a busload of shoppers to Coral Ridge Mall or organizing a
prayer ministry session. She started the Bookworms book club, three support groups and all kinds of
social activities, including a karaoke night. Becky is one of the amazing people who have committed
themselves to enriching the lives of others and enhancing the spirit for living. In turn, she knows that
her life is equally enriched.
“I love working with our residents — not just because of what I can do for them, but what they
do for me,” Becky said. “They’re so appreciative. I just have a lot of fun working with them.”

life well-lived
“ After 50+ years leading different lives and being 2,500 miles
apart, my brother Bob and I can now share longtime memories
and enjoy our future years together, not only with one another,
but with our loved ones as well. Life is good!”
Jeannie Hamilton, resident of The Village

life Well-lived in The Village
I
f you’re walking the trails around The Village at dusk, you’re likely to run into Jeannie Hamilton
and her bichon, Taco, out for their evening walk. Jeannie is active in many of the programs and
social events at The Village as well as in Indianola.
When you first meet Jeannie, you can tell she’s got something special. She’s outgoing, sassy and
full of personality. Before retiring, she and her husband Paul owned a family business.
They traveled all over the United States and Canada — playing golf whenever they had the chance.
They even fished for swordfish at Cabo San Lucas when it was the playground of the Rat Pack. So, how
did this woman end up in Indianola, Iowa
After her husband passed away, Jeannie wanted to move someplace close to her family. She wanted
an active, easy retirement allowing plenty of time for golf, community involvement and fun with
family and friends.
The Village offered her the freedom to be active and engaged with the larger community, while
allowing her to feel secure. Jeannie selected a townhome that gave her the independence she wanted
without all the work. She was attracted to the wellness philosophy as much as anything at The Village,
and the fact that the country club was only a couple of blocks away was a nice perk, too.
Sharing Experiences
Two years later, Jeannie is involved with the on-campus Living Well programs. She loves walking
Taco and visiting with neighbors. She also does a lot of volunteering.
She began working with hospice after moving into The Village — sharing her life experiences with
others. And, in a very short time, Jeannie had an unexpected second career as a hospice volunteer.
Recently, she became the head of the advisory council for WesleyLife’s hospice program. This
involvement has led to a richness of relationships and experiences that has made Jeannie’s life
even fuller.
The icing on the cake came when she found out she was getting new neighbors in April — her
brother Bob and his wife Millie decided to move into The Village.
“After 50+ years of leading different lives and being 2,500 miles apart, my brother Bob and I can
now share longtime memories and enjoy our future years together, not only with one another, but with
our loved ones as well. Life is good!” Jeannie said.
This summer there will be lots of bike rides with Bob. Walks with Taco along the
walking trails. Numerous rounds of golf at the country club. And time spent enjoying
a vibrant, yet easy lifestyle. After traveling the world over, Jeannie is at home and
happy in The Village.

Creating Happy endings for Families
P
icture this — Lorraine Gowdy holding her first great-grandson. That’s the happy ending to this
story, and today that’s where we’ll begin. Today, Lorraine’s home is at Wesley Acres. She has a
small apartment in assisted living — her own place, her own bed and a little help if she needs it.
Lorraine is looking forward to spring and getting out into the gardens. She wants to feel the sun
on her face and smell the flowers. Enjoying the flowers, that is a simple joy — like savoring a shrimp
cocktail or listening to jazz music with friends. Or just being around other people. But those simple joys
add up … into a much richer, more precious life.
Tom and Michelle Gowdy understand that, and they’re thankful that Lorraine was able to join the
Wesley Acres community.
“They’re so caring at Wesley Acres. They take her on the bus to her doctor’s appointments. They
help her get ready, just the way she wants. She goes to the dining room for meals and they make sure
she always has friends to sit with,” said daughter-in-law Michelle.
Recognizing a Need
Tom and Michelle had been concerned over Lorraine’s condition for the past couple of years. She
had always been very independent, but a fall in her condo made her realize she might need a little help.
So the family started to talk about her options.
“I made some calls and we were going to visit several places, but before we could decide we got a
phone call at 5:30 a.m. from emergency response. Mom had fallen and broken her hip,” Michelle said.
Surgery was indicated. But it was complicated by an existing heart condition. The surgeon was
afraid that Lorraine might not survive. She did. But then, the next day an X-ray showed complications
and she had another surgery.
“She went downhill from there,” Michelle recalls. “Her blood pressure was weak and the doctors
recommended putting her in intensive care.”
That was when Lorraine’s incredible spirit kicked in. She wanted palliative care. She wanted to start
WesleyLife Hospice and put her life in God’s hands. So she arrived at the John Stoddard Health Center
at Wesley Acres with doctors believing she had two weeks to live.
It’s no wonder that the nurses call her Lazarus. Because Lorraine just wouldn’t give up. She recovered,
thanks to her strong will and the collaborative efforts of the Wesley Acres and WesleyLife Hospice
nursing staff. After that, the family decided to move Lorraine into Wesley Acres’ assisted living
apartments.
Lorraine was only in her apartment a short while before she had another health issue. She
underwent surgery and was back in the health center for additional rehabilitation. “The staff has given
her the confidence and all the support to keep getting well and going back to her apartment again,”
Michelle said.
Today, Lorraine is back in her apartment and enjoying time with Wesley friends. Spring is coming
and she’ll be outside enjoying the smells of summer and the sun once more. Now, that’s a happy ending.

Responsibility to Serve, Inspire and enrich
I
t could be organizing a fundraiser for a local women’s shelter. It could be teaching others about
the benefits of staying physically and mentally active and engaged. Or, it might be teaching
students — from kindergarten through college — about the value of relationships with older adults.
At WesleyLife, we’ve been called upon to provide more than superior services and lifestyle options
for older adults and their families. We have a responsibility to our friends and neighbors — to support,
to inspire and to enrich life for the entire community.
Everyone at WesleyLife embraces this calling to give back to the community. Here are a few
examples from 2009:

• 254,762 Meals on Wheels served, on average, 85
percent are subsidized. Two volunteers from each of our
12 corporate sponsors generously donate their lunch
hour five days per week/three weeks per month for a
total of 4,320 donated hours last year.
• 204 student interns received 6,111 hours of practical
learning while assisting older adults.
• 163 meetings held at no cost in WesleyLife facilities by
local nonprofit organizations, serving 2,899 people.
• 45 educational learning and leadership opportunities to
our peers in the senior health and lifestyle industry. We
also donated 104 staff hours of leadership, reaching 561 people.
• 13,869 volunteer hours provided to us by people outside of our services, as well as volunteer
hours provided by our residents to those outside of WesleyLife.
• 857 people outside of our retirement communities participated in more than 80 events through
our LivingWell series designed to educate, engage, entertain and energize.
• 2,710 people participated in WesleyLife health screenings and educational health seminars.
WesleyLife provided 8,000 flu and H1N1 vaccinations to the public.
• 71 support group sessions — from sight to Alzheimer’s to grief — held at WesleyLife for
332 residents and 447 people from the greater community.
• $1.18 million worth of assistance through donations from our Good Samaritan/Good Shepherd
program and uncompensated care for those unable to pay the full cost of service.
As part of our social responsibility efforts, we have created resources,
tools and choices for older adults who want to remain independent and
active wherever they call home, whether that’s in their own home or in
one of our communities. We believe everyone should have the option of
living a balanced, meaningful life. That’s why we introduce clients and
their families to our wellness philosophy, which stresses six different
dimensions of wellness: social, physical, intellectual, career/vocational,
emotional and spiritual.
We are WesleyLife. We celebrate life … and the spirit for living.

Exceeding Expectations for Growth
W
esleyLife not only met the challenges of a turbulent economy in 2009, but rose to the
occasion to improve the quality of our services and our financial strength as an organization.
Occupancy rates are on the rise, as are the number of adults using our services. It is clear: people
believe in our commitment to providing a quality lifestyle.
Our long-term strategic plan continues to direct us as we assess new opportunities for growth, such
as opening Edgewater in August 2009. When making growth decisions, we anticipate the future needs
and wants and consider the financial and organizational resources needed to execute those plans.
Meeting our financial targets helps ensure our long-term sustainability. We finished 2009 as one of
our strongest performing years. Our total assets increased by $18 million to $227 million. Key business
measurements of our unrestricted cash and investments, ability to repay debt, and the ratio of our
unrestricted cash and investments to debt all finished strong.
embracing Transformation to Move us Forward
S
ome institutions struggle with transformation because they’re locked into what
they do. At WesleyLife, we embrace transformation as a means to move ourselves
forward beyond what we are doing today.
Ten years ago, we were an organization that owned real estate and retirement
residences, and performed services at those sites. Today, we’ve transformed into
an organization that knows no geographic boundaries. Wherever people say,
“I’m home,” that’s where we’ll
be to provide services.
Our Services
From hospice care and rehabilitative
therapy, to Meals on Wheels and other
home-delivered services, we’re
continually adding and expanding to
better meet the needs of older adults
and their families. Additionally, we’re
“ This organization is driven by
need. You don’t tell people what
they need. You find out what they
need and then you do everything
you can to provide it.”
— Carroll Bennett, Chairman of the WesleyLife Board of Directors
responding to generational shifts by offering more lifestyle choices and creating innovative
new communities to ensure that we’re always improving our high-quality offerings.
Another part of our transformation is our emphasis on wellness. We stress a total experience
— exercise, diet, spiritual exploration and other dimensions of wellness that lead to a happier
life. We encourage our staff to lead healthy lives, too, so they in turn can be better coaches
and advocates of an active, healthy lifestyle.
Our People
Part of our Christian compassion is to understand what makes a difference in the daily lives of the
people we impact — we say it’s “putting the person before the task.” Our employees are hired based on
their ability to live up to our mission and use their personal experiences, activities and hobbies as a way
to share with residents. Take, for example, our head chef at Edgewater. Besides his skills in the kitchen,
he’s also a talented dancer and now teaches salsa dance classes. When our staff members have a talent,
we encourage them to share it with our residents. This is part of becoming a family.
At WesleyLife, we provide more than services, we help people live a fuller, more meaningful life.
Thank You for Your Spirit for Giving
A
legacy can take many forms — the faces of our descendents, the trees planted during our
lifetime or the investments made in our communities. One of the greatest legacies you can leave
is a legacy to the future. Leaving this earth with the knowledge that we will continue to serve a greater
purpose is an aspiration we should all strive toward.
We are deeply moved by the decisions of our Legacy Society members to leave their legacy with
WesleyLife. These selfless plans express their greatest values and interests. They know their investment
will help others in the decades to come, but they may never know the full extent and impact their gift
may have. Their legacy may be remembered as a physical improvement to a building, a technological
health care advancement or financial support for someone through the Good Samaritan/Good Shepherd
Program. All of these gifts work together and allow WesleyLife to grow and serve others, thus fulfilling
our mission.
The Legacy Society at each WesleyLife community represents those individuals who have named
WesleyLife, or one of our communities or programs, in their wills or through another planned giving
instrument. If you have named a WesleyLife community or program in your will or estate plan,
please let us know so that we may include you in future Legacy Society recognition, mailings and
special events.
We are pleased to recognize and thank the members of our Legacy Society.
