W
elcome to CANDISC, Cycling Around
North Dakota in Sakakawea Country, a
bicycle ride around some of the greatest
frontier of North America. CANDISC will cover 389
miles of hills, dales, highways and scenic roads in
North Dakota. You’ll taste North Dakota hospitality
first hand as communities open their towns to you.
In its 16th year, CANDISC is a bicycle tour not a race.
The “Bike the Badlands of Teddy Roosevelt” Tour
will cycle from huge pristine Lake Sakakawea to the
ruggedly picturesque North Dakota Badlands. You
will have time to bike in truly scenic Theodore
Roosevelt National Park named after our nation’s
leading conservation president; visit Roosevelt’s
original Maltese Cross Ranch log cabin. In Teddy
Roosevelt National Park, there are expansive prairie
dog towns where herds of buffalo, elk, antelope and
deer are often seen roaming freely just as they did in
the days of the old West. Take time for the allure of
the historic Wild West town of Medora and plan to
attend the world-renowned Medora Musical which
you’ll view from an outdoor theater set in the
Badlands. CANDISC offers the unique opportunity
to cycle around some of the greatest unspoiled frontier
in North America as you breathe
deeply the cleanest air in the USA.
The ride will begin at Fort Stevenson
State Park at Garrison, ND, 1,500
population town on beautiful Lake
Sakakawea, largest Army Corps reservoir
in the USA. Riders will travel west and
back to the Park to end the seven day
tour.
Come join us...
for the ride of
your life.
Before the ride...
This brochure contains a CANDISC
application form. To ensure your place
in the ride make sure you give complete
information. Note that the application
form also includes a waiver that must
be signed. Be sure a signed waiver is
submitted for each person wanting to
participate in CANDISC.
Application is limited to 500 riders
so participation is on a first-come, firstserve
basis. We know more will want
to participate, so get your applications
in early. Fees will be returned to those
who apply after the 500 limit has been
met.
Application fee is $149 per person or $349 for a family
(husband, wife, children 18 & under) through July 15th
and should be paid by check or online by credit card. To
encourage timely applications, a late fee of $25 will be
charged after July 15th and must be added to the regular
application fee.
A daily rider fee of $40/day/rider is available to those
who plan to ride only certain days; not the entire week.
Your application fee includes overnight camping in 7
communities, showers, sag service, official CANDISC ID
bands, CANDISC shirt, travel information on North Dakota,
emergency medical support, route maps, baggage tags or
vehicle pass, week long parking, marked route, mechanic
support, baggage transfer, portapotty support, accident
insurance, designated rest stops with water every 10 to 20
miles, patrolled route, bike plate, and free celebration meal
at the end of the tour.
Each rider under age 18 must have a signed medical
release in his or her possession at all times. It’s important
to have the release at all times to prevent delays of medical
treatment. Minors must be accompanied by responsible
adults, preferably parents. Unaccompanied minors will be
sent home. Any minor consuming alcoholic beverages may
be charged according to the law and sent home.
Planning for the ride...
CANDISC is a ride not a race. But you will get the
most out of it if you are in good shape. The route is 389
miles with daily mileage ranging from 19 to 72 with a
century and National Park loop option available. Terrain
in North Dakota can vary from flat wheat fields to steep
hills. If you are unable to complete the ride, you are
responsible for your own transportation back to Fort
Stevenson State Park near Garrison.
You may begin riding each morning at sunrise, officially
6 a.m. Riding in the dark is foolish as North Dakota enjoys
16 hours of daylight during the summer. Please plan
to ride at a speed that will enable you to finish each day
before sundown.
Sag wagons will bring up
the rear to pick up those riders
who break down physically
or mechanically. You
can use the “thumbs down”
signal to let the drivers know
you need help. If riders are
veering off the established
route they must let a
CANDISC official know
their intentions. We are
concerned about your
whereabouts and
wellbeing.
Once your application is
accepted, you will receive a
confirmation letter. At the
park on Aug. 2nd you will
receive a packet containing:
Rider’s tags: You will receive
a rider’s band that
must be worn during the
ride. It cannot be removed
without cutting or destroying
the clasp. It gives you access to emergency medical
services, shuttle buses, sag wagons, campground facilities,
showers, mechanical repairs, etc.
Baggage Tags: Baggage tags permit you to put your
gear on the CANDISC baggage trucks. By accepting baggage
tags, you agree to leave your vehicle at Fort Stevenson
State Park or at home.
For security reasons, baggage must be clearly marked
and can be claimed from our trucks. Each rider is allowed
two bags (weighing not more than 30 lbs. each)
no external strapping to the bags.
Be sure to have your baggage at the baggage trucks by
8 a.m. The trucks load where they unloaded the day before
in the campgrounds. You will be responsible for transporting
your baggage to and from the baggage truck.
Those not staying in the CANDISC campground
must make other arrangements to have their gear
3
transported to the baggage truck. Remember the baggage
truck leaves at 8:00 o’clock sharp in the morning.
Vehicle Pass: A vehicle pass is required for any vehicle
accompanying CANDISC. All vehicles must have designated
stops and not follow the cyclists which can cause a
hazardous situation. The vehicle pass will include route
mapping, staying in designated CANDISC campgrounds
and use of campground facilities, vehicle ID and state map.
Daily route maps/marking: Daily route maps will be
provided to riders. The exact route will also be clearly
marked on the right side of the road.
Bicycle receiving and shipping is available. Shuttle
service from Bismarck and Minot airports is available
and will be provided by CANDISC. Finalize your arrangements
in writing, by e-mail or letter by July 15 if you
need these services.
Your Accommodations...
Camping areas will be set aside by each community on
school grounds or city or state parks. The night before
CANDISC begins you will camp in designated areas at
Fort Stevenson State Park.
A hotel/motel list is available by calling the 800 number
or e-mail listed in this brochure.
The Burning Hills
Amphitheater
There is simply nothing like it in the Midwest, from the hilltop
parking lot, an escalator moves visitors comfortably down seven
stories into the natural bowl of the amphitheater. There are
convenient rest rooms, large concessions, easy walkways and
wide aisles.
The amphitheater holds 2,800 people, all seated in individual
stadium-style seats with back rests. The seats can be reserved
in advance, no waiting in long lines for tickets in Medora anymore.
The stage is spacious enough to hold a posse of 40 horses
should they be necessary in the musical. The Main Street set
evokes the historic cowtown heritage of Medora. The set opens
in the middle during the show to reveal a spectacular view of
the Badlands. The moving set allows the stage to retain a town
like appearance and when fully open features tributes to
Theodore Roosevelt’s Rough Riders and American Indians
played on the surrounding hillsides.
The lighting and sound system are technical achievements
that gives the amphitheater both concert hall acoustics and the
ability to bathe a nearby hillside in rich light to create moods for
the musical.
The Medora Musical is a Broadway style song and dance
show that honors Theodore Roosevelt, a one time Badlands
rancher and 26th President who is credited with advancing the
conservation movement and development of American national
park system. The show is a mixture of song, comedy, western
heritage and a dash of patriotism.
long ago childhood and their precious play things.
Plus a unique, old quilt collection including a rare one woven
The Bully Spirit
The effect of the land on the man was amazing even to
Theodore Roosevelt himself. In fact, he went so far as to say
that had he not come West as a young man, he might never
have become president of these United States.
As he wrote, “the romance of my life began” when he took
up the life of the cowboy on the Dakota range in 1883. It’s a
story every child in North Dakota knows, one that has been
passed down through the years, generation after generation.
But with all the telling, the story still rings true ... Roosevelt’s life
in the Badlands had a profound effect on him, as profound an
effect as he had on the nation.
The cowboys who rode with Roosevelt saw the
transformation take place, saw a “dude” become a man of pure
bone, muscle and grit. But the real change came from within,
as Roosevelt’s unbridled zest for life, his “Bully spirit,” asserted
itself in everything he said and did.
Roosevelt came to believe that he could accomplish anything
. . . ride for forty hours without sleep, survive a stampede, break
horses that refused to be tamed, and take care of those who
pushed him too far. Later, he was prepared to take on world
issues with equal gusto, “to speak softly but carry a big stick.”
Will the oft-told tale of Theodore Roosevelt repeat itself
Will the Badlands have the same kind of amazing effect on
other individuals Will it instill that “Bully Spirit” that stirs on to
greatness It happened one hundred years ago. With your help,
it can happen again.
