Backfire Flame Arrestors<br />

Carburetor backfire arrest device<br />
Sec. 3. The carburetor on an inboard motorboat must be<br />
equipped with a stock factory device:<br />
1. designed and constructed to arrest backfire; and<br />
2. of a make or type approved by the United States Coast<br />
Guard.<br />
As added by P.L.1-1995, SEC.8.<br />
Backfire flame arrestors are designed to prevent the ignition<br />
of gasoline vapors in case the engine backfires.<br />
◆◆ All powerboats (except outboards) that are fueled with<br />
gasoline must have a U.S. Coast Guard–approved<br />
backfire flame arrestor on each carburetor.<br />
◆◆ Periodically clean the flame arrestor and check for<br />
damage.<br />
