A brief history of Thin Client (TC) design, production and support in Data Processing Iran (DPI)

Since many years ago DPI investigated Farsi Thin Client production and development for connecting to
Mainframe and AS/400 hosts. At that time, DPI considered Thin Client development as it’s mission
while the Iranian IT market also imposed a severe demand. ‐ Products like 1401,1402, 1412, 1421 and
1431 are samples of Thin Clients terminals active in a variety of computer sites in Iran for a long time.
The latest DPI Thin Client terminal product is 1441, a completely unique and powerful product
with prominent characteristics. All Thin Clint products are designed to use known network
architectures as TCP/IP and the IBM SNA to connect to host environments.
The most important feature of DPI Thin Clients is that the firmware (OS Clients) of these products is
developed by DPI experts themselves and for different Operating Systems. Therefore DPI can meet
any Thin Client customer requests independent of specific hardware vendors.
Moreover, DPI’s expertise in supporting it’s hardware and software products with twenty eight years
of experience in workshop maintenance and fields support, has proved DPI to be a reliable
cornerstone in the Iranian IT market.
DPI is an IT pioneer in Iran. And at the moment more than 2500 Thin Client terminals are in use in DPI
customer sites.

Thin Client Operating System specifications and it’s software
The latest versions of Thin Clients include “Microso� XP Embedded with Service Pack 2.0 and Feature
Pack 2007” as their Operating System in which up to the moment Embedded XP technology is exploited
for security and system protection. FBWF (File Based Write Filter) technology implements system
protection at file level and does not allow the user to write any information on disk except the files
specified by the Operating System.
Operating System features implemented by DPI (Embedded XP)
o Full compatibility with MS Windows/XP Professional so that all hardware
components identified and installed in XP Professional are also identifiable and
installable in Embedded XP environment.
o All software executable in MS Windows/XP Professional can also be installed and
executed in Embedded XP.
Note: It goes without saying that the software components can only be installed if their base
software prerequisites are already installed. So, before installing any software you should
consider your disk capacity upgrade too.

All expected security features are considered in the latest TC provided by DPI so that no files can be
stored on this system. All processes are executed in memory and that’s why this system is durable
against computer viruses and the Operating System will not crash easily. Modifications are Limited
to a part of the system responsible for maintaining the TC system information.
Operating System Recovery Features
Although the Operating System in the latest DPI TC is reliable by itself, one can select to start the TC in
Recovery Mode and reload a healthy system image.
Operating System Disk Requirements
The latest TC Opera�ng System itself requires 512 MB of disk space to be installed. And if you choose to
install Microso� Office 2003 too, you will need a total of 1 GB disk space.
