A <strong>brief</strong> <strong>history</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Th<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>Client</strong> (<strong>TC</strong>) <strong>design</strong>, <strong>production</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>support</strong> <strong>in</strong> Data Process<strong>in</strong>g Iran (DPI)<br />

Company<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce many years ago DPI <strong>in</strong>vestigated Farsi <strong>Th<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>Client</strong> <strong>production</strong> <strong>and</strong> development for connect<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

Ma<strong>in</strong>frame <strong>and</strong> AS/400 hosts. At that time, DPI considered <strong>Th<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>Client</strong> development as it’s mission<br />

while the Iranian IT market also imposed a severe dem<strong>and</strong>. ‐ Products like 1401,1402, 1412, 1421 <strong>and</strong><br />

1431 are samples <strong>of</strong> <strong>Th<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>Client</strong>s term<strong>in</strong>als active <strong>in</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> computer sites <strong>in</strong> Iran for a long time.<br />

The latest DPI <strong>Th<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>Client</strong> term<strong>in</strong>al product is 1441, a completely unique <strong>and</strong> powerful product<br />

with prom<strong>in</strong>ent characteristics. All <strong>Th<strong>in</strong></strong> Cl<strong>in</strong>t products are <strong>design</strong>ed to use known network<br />

architectures as <strong>TC</strong>P/IP <strong>and</strong> the IBM SNA to connect to host environments.<br />

The most important feature <strong>of</strong> DPI <strong>Th<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>Client</strong>s is that the firmware (OS <strong>Client</strong>s) <strong>of</strong> these products is<br />

developed by DPI experts themselves <strong>and</strong> for different Operat<strong>in</strong>g Systems. Therefore DPI can meet<br />

any <strong>Th<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>Client</strong> customer requests <strong>in</strong>dependent <strong>of</strong> specific hardware vendors.<br />

Moreover, DPI’s expertise <strong>in</strong> <strong>support</strong><strong>in</strong>g it’s hardware <strong>and</strong> s<strong>of</strong>tware products with twenty eight years<br />

<strong>of</strong> experience <strong>in</strong> workshop ma<strong>in</strong>tenance <strong>and</strong> fields <strong>support</strong>, has proved DPI to be a reliable<br />

cornerstone <strong>in</strong> the Iranian IT market.<br />

DPI is an IT pioneer <strong>in</strong> Iran. And at the moment more than 2500 <strong>Th<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>Client</strong> term<strong>in</strong>als are <strong>in</strong> use <strong>in</strong> DPI<br />

customer sites.<br />

<strong>Th<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>Client</strong> Operat<strong>in</strong>g System specifications <strong>and</strong> it’s s<strong>of</strong>tware<br />

The latest versions <strong>of</strong> <strong>Th<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>Client</strong>s <strong>in</strong>clude “Microso XP Embedded with Service Pack 2.0 <strong>and</strong> Feature<br />

Pack 2007” as their Operat<strong>in</strong>g System <strong>in</strong> which up to the moment Embedded XP technology is exploited<br />

for security <strong>and</strong> system protection. FBWF (File Based Write Filter) technology implements system<br />

protection at file level <strong>and</strong> does not allow the user to write any <strong>in</strong>formation on disk except the files<br />

specified by the Operat<strong>in</strong>g System.<br />

Operat<strong>in</strong>g System features implemented by DPI (Embedded XP)<br />

o Full compatibility with MS W<strong>in</strong>dows/XP Pr<strong>of</strong>essional so that all hardware<br />

components identified <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong> XP Pr<strong>of</strong>essional are also identifiable <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>stallable <strong>in</strong> Embedded XP environment.<br />

o All s<strong>of</strong>tware executable <strong>in</strong> MS W<strong>in</strong>dows/XP Pr<strong>of</strong>essional can also be <strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>and</strong><br />

executed <strong>in</strong> Embedded XP.<br />

Note: It goes without say<strong>in</strong>g that the s<strong>of</strong>tware components can only be <strong>in</strong>stalled if their base<br />

s<strong>of</strong>tware prerequisites are already <strong>in</strong>stalled. So, before <strong>in</strong>stall<strong>in</strong>g any s<strong>of</strong>tware you should<br />

consider your disk capacity upgrade too.<br />

o The follow<strong>in</strong>g parameters are accessible <strong>and</strong> can be modified <strong>and</strong> saved for next reboot:<br />

• Computer Name, Work Group

Security Features<br />

• Doma<strong>in</strong> connection<br />

• Onl<strong>in</strong>e IP<br />

• Graphics related parameters<br />

• Proxy sett<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

o Support for Network Protocols like <strong>TC</strong>P/IP, Netware, …<br />

o Ability to <strong>in</strong>stall a variety <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ters <strong>and</strong> use them <strong>in</strong> different environments<br />

o Ability to connect remotely via RDP with Remote Desktop Connection<br />

o Ability to connect via ICA with Citrix Program Neighborhood <strong>and</strong> Citrix Program<br />

neighborhood Agent<br />

o Ability to connect via HTTP with Microso Internet Explorer 6.0 <strong>and</strong> <strong>support</strong> for Java<br />

<strong>and</strong> ActiveX<br />

o Ability to play sound <strong>and</strong> video via Media Player<br />

o Ability to view PDF documents<br />

o Ability to create <strong>and</strong> edit files us<strong>in</strong>g Microso Office 2003<br />

o Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for usage <strong>and</strong> parameter sett<strong>in</strong>gs is available<br />

o Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for security policy creation, activation <strong>and</strong> deactivation is available End user<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is available<br />

All expected security features are considered <strong>in</strong> the latest <strong>TC</strong> provided by DPI so that no files can be<br />

stored on this system. All processes are executed <strong>in</strong> memory <strong>and</strong> that’s why this system is durable<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st computer viruses <strong>and</strong> the Operat<strong>in</strong>g System will not crash easily. Modifications are Limited<br />

to a part <strong>of</strong> the system responsible for ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the <strong>TC</strong> system <strong>in</strong>formation.<br />

Operat<strong>in</strong>g System Recovery Features<br />

Although the Operat<strong>in</strong>g System <strong>in</strong> the latest DPI <strong>TC</strong> is reliable by itself, one can select to start the <strong>TC</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

Recovery Mode <strong>and</strong> reload a healthy system image.<br />

Operat<strong>in</strong>g System Disk Requirements<br />

The latest <strong>TC</strong> Operang System itself requires 512 MB <strong>of</strong> disk space to be <strong>in</strong>stalled. And if you choose to<br />

<strong>in</strong>stall Microso Office 2003 too, you will need a total <strong>of</strong> 1 GB disk space.
