3.5. Area estimation<br />
The sample area estimation of the extent of <strong>opium</strong> <strong>poppy</strong> cultivation is a ratio estimate using risk<br />
area as an auxiliary variable.<br />

Even though an unbiased estimator of the variance is available for this sampling design,<br />
bootstrapping 44 was performed for estimating the confidence intervals for both national and<br />
subnational estimates. This was necessary as the heavily skewed distribution of <strong>poppy</strong> in the<br />
samples led to unrealistic confidence intervals when applying the standard methods. Although<br />
