Dr. Edward Garrett
Dr. Basil Paulus
Physicians at Baptist
Memorial Hospital-Memphis
recently performed the area’s
first surgery with the Edwards
SAPIEN transcatheter heart
valve technology that was
approved by the US Food and
Drug Administration in
November 2011 for inoperable
patients with aortic stenosis.
Aortic stenosis is a progressive disease that affects the aortic valve of
the heart by restricting proper blood flow.
During the procedure, cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons
replace the damaged valve using a catheter, threading an expandable heart
valve up an artery from the groin and adjusting it within the heart. By
using a catheter, the doctors are able to perform the necessary procedures
without having to perform open heart surgery.
“Without this new technology, we would not be able to address the
needs of inoperable patients,” said Edward Garrett Jr. M.D., the cardiovascular
surgeon who performed the first transcatheter aortic valve
replacement surgery at Baptist Memphis.
Several doctors assisted in and observed the first surgery.
“This surgery is a revolutionary breakthrough for our patients suffering
from severe aortic stenosis,” said Basil Paulus M.D., the cardiologist overseeing
the first patient’s care. “Studies show that without this new
technology, 50 percent of patients with severe aortic stenosis will not
survive more than an average of two years after the onset of symptoms.”
Baptist Memphis is the first hospital in the region to have this technology
and perform the surgery.
According to the American Heart Association, more than 5 million
Americans are diagnosed with heart valve disease each year. While up to
1.5 million people in the U.S. suffer from aortic stenosis, approximately
500,000 within this group of patients suffer from severe AS. An estimated
250,000 patients with severe AS are symptomatic.
Drs. Edward Garrett Jr. and Basil Paulus were the lead physicians on the
inaugural surgery. For more information about the procedure, please call
Update beneficiaries online through
Employee Self Service
Baptist colleagues can now update beneficiary information online for
company paid life and voluntary life plans.
The beneficiaries can be entered in the Employee Self Service system
online and will override any previous beneficiaries listed in the
colleague’s file.
“Currently, all of the beneficiary information is in paper located in the
colleague’s file,” said Pamela Robinson, Human Resources benefit
manager.
“Once colleagues log in to the ESS system, no beneficiaries will be
listed. Colleagues can update the system to see their beneficiaries online,
which will override any existing information in the file.”
Colleagues can choose whether to complete the written form to update
their beneficiary information and turn it in to their HR representative, or
log on to ESS which is accessible through the Human Resources homepage
on MyBaptist or through the Popular Sites tab and Lawson link.
“We are excited about this new process because it gives everyone a
choice. We hope colleagues feel like it is easier to update the information
online rather than taking a trip to HR to fill out a form,” said Robinson.
Baptist Medical Group acquires Internal Medicine Associates of Memphis, P.A.
Dr. Lee Vieron
*Baptist Medical Group, an affiliate
of Baptist Memorial Health
Care, has further expanded its presence
in primary care through the
acquisition of Internal Medicine
Associates of Memphis, P.A.
Dr. Leonidas (Lee) Vieron and Dr.
Vincent Smith will continue to practice
at the clinic, and it will
remain at its current location,
6025 Walnut Grove, Suite 627.
The practice name will be
Baptist Medical Group-Internal
Medicine Associates of
Memphis.
Internal Medicine Associates
of Memphis was founded by Dr.
Jacob Bronstein in 1923. Bronstein
established his practice based on the
principles of availability and service.
His son, Dr. Maury W. Bronstein,
joined the practice in 1955. Clinic
leaders say under his leadership,
Internal Medicine Associates developed
an unprecedented reputation
in the community.
In 1977, the practice added Vieron
and Smith, who have continued to
treat the people of Memphis with
this high standard of care, BMG
leadership says. Vieron and Smith
are board certified in internal medicine.
“Our practice has been partners
with Baptist for decades, and the
reputation of quality care they have
built over the last 100 years led to
our agreement,” said Smith.
Vieron continued, “Baptist
Medical Group’s management has
allowed us to focus our time and
efforts on patient care and meet our
fundamental values of availability
and service.”
“The acquisition of Internal
Medicine Associates of Memphis
strengthens our ability to provide
high-quality patient care in our
community,” said Jim Boswell, vice
president of physician services and
chief executive officer for BMG.
“Patients in Memphis and the
surrounding area have benefited
from the strong physician providers
of this group for more than nine
decades.”
“We unfortunately run into many
different situations where minor
children, deceased family members,
or no one is listed as a beneficiary
for company paid life and voluntary
life plans. This can cause major
issues with releasing funds.
Colleagues may also have ex-spouses
listed, which can cause turmoil in
families if something happened.”
The benefits office cannot discuss
beneficiary information on the
phone, so colleagues concerned
about who is listed as their beneficiary
should update them online
through ESS or fill out a form at
their HR office.
“It’s not important who you have
listed as your beneficiary now; it’s
who you want on there for the
your beneficiaries in 2012, we know
it’s the most accurate and current
Baptist clinical documentation specialists offer a different type of care to patients
Caring comes naturally for Janice Cromer, a registered
nurse. Over her 10 years of nursing, she has
cared for a multitude of patients. Two years ago she
chose to leave bedside care and become a clinical
documentation specialist at Baptist Memorial
Hospital-DeSoto.
“Before becoming a CDS, I did not realize the
enormous effect this job had on the overall well being
of patients,” said Cromer.
A CDS is responsible for reviewing patient medical
records to ensure the records accurately represent the
severity of the patient’s illness. This is achieved
through extensive record review and interaction with
physicians, health information management professionals
and nursing staff.
A CDS functions as part of a team that includes
physicians and nurses. They work to strengthen the
line of communication between these groups to
ensure the quality, efficiency and safety of patient
care.
Clinical documentation is often mistaken as a desk
job. However energetic, sharp-minded nurses, like
Cromer, are needed to fill this interactive position.
“When I accurately portray the status of patients’
illnesses through clinical documentation, I can see
the direct results,” said Cromer. “Through my line of
work, physicians and nurses are able to make timely
and informed decisions about the path of care for
patients.”
What physicians write in the medical records
directly affects the physician’s and hospital's public
profiling scores. If physicians don't provide information
in language that can be coded, a medical
condition may go unreported, and the downstream
effect could be missed opportunities for appropriate
payment, and skewed reporting in mortality, complication
rates, and other quality metrics, according to
Cathy Rose, system director for Clinical
Documentation Improvement.
In addition, this publicly reported data allow the
health care consumer to make informed decisions on
where to go for their care. The data are also utilized by
payers and employers to evaluate providers. If a
hospital or physician has higher costs, longer lengths
of stay, and poor outcomes, then payers and
employers may not recommend sending their
enrollees to them.
Unlike a typical nursing position, a CDS is not
required to work weekends or holidays and is not
required to be on-call.
Registered nurses with a BS degree and critical
care experience are ideal candidates to become a CDS.
There is an immediate need for new clinical documentation
specialists systemwide with Baptist. If you
are interested in becoming a CDS, contact Cathy
Rose, director of clinical documentation improvement,
for more information at 901-227-0361.
“A growing body of research indicates
Dr. Gilbert Zoghbi with Stern Cardiovascular Foundation lectures at the Baptist
Memorial Hospital-DeSoto Heart Symposium on Saturday, Feb. 25.
On Saturday, Feb. 25, the Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto Heart
Symposium, Defining Success with Heart Failure, attracted more than 80 attendees
for a day of discussing best practices and outcomes of heart disease.
Experts from Baptist Memorial Health Care and Stern Cardiovascular
Foundation addressed managing heart failure in the office or hospital
setting; discussed challenges faced by the heart failure patient; identified
tools available to manage advanced heart failure; and analyzed the scope of
heart failure as it applies to the office and hospital setting.
“The symposium was very well executed, and going forward we can prepare
a top-notch regional symposium. It was a missed opportunity for health care
professionals who did not attend,” said Dr. Arie Szatkowski, a cardiologist
with Stern Cardiovascular Foundation and one of the presenters for the
symposium.

Colleague’s Corner: Why are you here
Yes, you are being watched. Your children follow
in your footsteps. Your co-workers follow your
example. Your patients follow your hope.
Everything you do, everything you say, and everything
you don’t do has an effect and influences
those around you either directly or indirectly. As
we go through day-to-day life we don’t always pay
attention to our behavior and our words. Being a
living example of God’s love requires a commitment
to live with intent.
The selflessness of giving of your entire being
by being steadfast in your daily life is one of the
most important of all gifts. Many times you won’t
even know that you helped someone. You may
never know how your empathy gave comfort to a
dying patient. You may never know that the time
you gave of yourself without expectation, you
