<strong>2013</strong> <strong>Graduates</strong> <strong>Focus</strong> on their Future 

Christina James

<strong>Graduates</strong> nominated by faculty and selected by the Graduation Committee to represent their class and speak at the May 11 commencement include Christina James as student 

keynote speaker; William Walter David, welcome address; and Kendra Aspaas, closing remarks. Christina will receive her Associate of Arts degree in Native Studies. William will 

receive his Associate’s degree in General Studies. Kendra is graduating with an Associate’s degree in Digital Media Arts and Design. 

Christina James will be the first to tell you that it is never too late to get your education. As a 

wife and a mother to seven children between the ages of four and 17, Christina had spent six years 

working as a pharmacy technician but realized she wanted to focus on getting her education and be 

an example to her children. That was when she enrolled at San Juan College and found her niche in 

Native Studies. 

Christina has completed her degree requirements for her Associate of Arts in Native Studies. 

This fall she will relocate her family to Flagstaff, Ariz., to enroll at Northern Arizona University, where 

she plans to earn her Bachelor’s degree in Indigenous Studies. She hopes to continue her education 

and receive a Master’s degree in Cultural Anthropology or Linguistic Anthropology. 

She credits much of her success to her professors at San Juan College who encouraged her 

to look into native and indigenous studies. “I wasn’t raised on the reservation, but wanted to know 

more about my culture,” says Christina. “They helped turn my curiosity into a real course of study.” 

In addition to her studies at San Juan College, Christina is active on campus. She has served as 

a member of Student Senate for the past three years, first as Senator at Large, then as Club Senator 

for the Native American United Club (NAUC) and currently as the Student Body President. She has 

served on the Strategic Service Committee, College Council, Red Apple Transit Committee and Student 

Activities Board. She is an active member of the Knowledge, Integrity, Vision and Academics Club 

(KIVA Club) and the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) as well as the National 

Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS). She has received awards from the NSLS, the NAUC, and 

Student Government. 

While busy keeping up with her seven children, her husband, and being a full-time college 

student, you can often find Christina in the Student Activities Office where she is a work study. 

an executive board member of the National Society of Leadership and Success, as well as a student 

ambassador. He is currently a work study in the San Juan College Office of Technology Services. He is 

also an active member in the community serving as a volunteer at the Connelly Hospitality House. 

William is a shining example of a student who reached a clear fork in the road and made a 

decision to take steps to turn his life around and achieve his dreams. 

Before coming to San Juan College, Kendra Aspaas, attended the New Mexico School for the 

Deaf in Santa Fe where she graduated in May 2005. A native of Shiprock, Kendra returned home 

with the hopes of continuing her education and doing what she needed to do to keep improving. 

In the fall of 2007, with the help of a interpreter, Josie Culpepper, who works in the SJC Office of 

Disability Services, Kendra enrolled as a full-time student at San Juan College. 

When Kendra began at San Juan College, she struggled with math, spending many hours in the 

Student Success Center, where she received math tutoring. She never gave up and had amazing 

determination that was noticed by her instructors and tutors. She did so well that the Student Success 

Center later hired her as a tutor for other deaf students struggling in math. 

Kendra will receive her Associate’s degree in Digital Media Arts and Design. Following graduation, 

she hopes to stay in the Four Corners area and find a career in digital media or photography. 

Her parents have been supportive of her continued education and have always encouraged her 

to think of her future. They helped her stay focused on getting her degree and pursing her career.

After persevering through a motorcycle accident, job layoffs and other challenges in life, William 

Walter David wanted more than a job, he wanted a career. This led him to San Juan College. 

William will receive his Associate’s degree in General Studies. He plans to transfer to the 

University of New Mexico in the fall to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, where 

he hopes to work in the field of engineering with NASA or Lockheed Martin. 

William has been a member of the EDGE program since his initial enrollment at San Juan College. 

He is an Eagle Scout and active on the San Juan College campus serving as a peer mentor of EDGE,

Commencement is one of the most exciting times of the year, 

and as your president and a former student, it gives me great 

pride to celebrate each graduate’s success. It is truly rewarding 

to see the pride on the faces of family, friends and loved ones 

as their graduate crosses the stage to receive that wellearned 

diploma. Having traveled this same road, I know that 

each student’s accomplishments were not without struggles, 

challenges and sacrifices. Balancing classes, study time and 

projects with family and jobs is a quite a feat, and one that 

certainly is to be applauded. 

This is a phenomenal accomplishment, and one that has 

built a foundation for future successes. Whether our students 

are embarking on a new career or continuing their education, 

I hope each will reflect on this accomplishment, be proud and 

know that they have what it takes to achieve all of their future 

dreams and goals. 

Earning a degree not only provides a great sense of 

accomplishment, it also enhances graduates’ ability to increase 

their income. In a recent economic impact study conducted 

by Economic Modeling Specialist Intl. (EMSI), results showed 

that the average annual income of students who completed an 

associate’s degree and worked in the San Juan College service 

area, earned 35 percent more than those with a high school 

diploma. This is a strong indicator that our graduates are on 

their way to a lucrative future. 

Along with congratulating our graduates for a job well 

done, I would like to thank our faculty and staff for their 

dedication to ensure our students’ success. I also want to 

thank our board for their continued support of our college and 

community. Congratulations to Shane Chance, Dr. Joseph Pope 

and Ken Hare who were recently re-elected to the board. At our 

April Board of Trustees meeting, board members elected new 

officers – Dr. Joseph Pope, will serve as board chairman; John 

Thompson as vice chairman; and Evelyn Benny as secretary. We 

are fortunate to have these members, as well as Chad King and 

Mathew Tso, who each are truly committed to the welfare and 

success of both the college and community. 

Kim Carpenter to speak at San Juan 

College Graduation 

Kim Carpenter, CEO of San Juan County and a #1 New 

York Times Best Selling Author, will be the keynote 

speaker at San Juan College’s graduation ceremonies 

on Saturday, May 11. Carpenter was born and raised in 

Farmington, a member of the Farmington High Class of 

1984 and a San Juan College attendee in the same year. 

He is a graduate of New Mexico Highlands University with 

a Bachelor’s degree in Business and a Master’s degree 

in Human Performance and Education Administration. 

Kim has also completed Harvard University’s Institute of 

Higher Education in Management Development. 

Kim and his wife, Krickitt, became the center of 

international attention first when an accident changed 

their lives and again when the couple wrote a book about 

the experience which was later turned into a major motion 

picture. Ten weeks after their wedding, the couple was in 

a car accident that left Krickitt with brain injuries and no 

memory of being married to Kim. Eventually, the two fell 

back in love and “re-married” in 1996 on Valentine’s Day. 

Their story became a book that topped the New York 

Times non-fiction best sellers list and a movie starring 

Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams which became 

the sixth best-selling romantic drama movie in history 

and was the number one movie in the Box Office on its 

opening week in 23 different countries. 

Kim now serves as the Chief Executive Officer of 

San Juan County and has worked in public service for 

more than 24 years, including higher education and 

local government positions. He has also served as an 

accomplished motivational and inspirational speaker 

for over 14 years and has spoken at universities, 

conferences and in front of sports team, churches,

corporations and non-profit organizations touring with 

the likes of Sarah Palin and Candace Cameron. 

Kim and Krickitt have a son, Danny, and daughter, 

Leeann, and are both very involved in numerous 

organizations within the community. Kim coaches a local 

youth baseball team and serves as the president and 

general chairman of the Connie Mack World Series as well.

Alixis Russell 

Juan College 

student and Piedra Vista High School senior Alixis Russell 

will be receiving this May. 

Alixis will receive her Associate of Arts degree in Liberal 

Arts from San Juan College two weeks prior to receiving her 

high school diploma from Piedra Vista High School. 

This is all thanks to the Dual Credit and Early 

Admission program at San Juan College. These programs 

are designed specifically for high school students to take 

college level courses while still in high school. 

The Early Admission program is similar to the Dual 

Credit program in its requirements; however, with Early 

Admission, students can take any course offered at San 

Juan College except Applied Music courses and Physical 

Education courses, which have an age requirement.

Early Admission students are also responsible for paying 

all tuition, fees and books where Dual Credit costs are 

waived or taken care of by the high school. 

“This is a great opportunity for high school students 

to engage themselves in the college environment,” says 

Steve Wamel, San Juan College Dual Credit coordinator. 

“Alixis is a success story, proving that high school 

students can graduate with a degree from SJC, while 

graduating with their high school diploma.” 

Alixis credits much of her success in the program to 

her mother and San Juan College. 

“My mom was the one who encouraged me to sign 

up for the Dual Credit program the summer prior to my 

junior year of high school,” she recalls. “San Juan College 

gave me the ability to explore my interests, helping me to 

realize that I want to continue my education in Psychology 

and eventually move on to law school.” 

Skylar Masten, coordinator of Enrollment Services at 

San Juan College, was instrumental in keeping Alixis on 

track toward the goal of receiving her associate degree. 

“Her drive and determination to finish her associate 

degree while completing high school is rare,” says 

Masten. “I was fortunate that I was able to work with 

her and help her through the process. She took full 

advantage of the opportunities that San Juan College 

offers all area high school students through the Dual 

Credit and Early Admission programs.” 

Beginning this fall, Alixis will attend Grand Canyon 

University in Phoenix, Arizona. Her credits from San Juan 

College will transfer to Grand Canyon University where 

she will begin as a junior working toward her Bachelor’s 

degree in Psychology.

All-USA Academic Team 

San Juan College students Cristol Martinez and Nicki 

Villasenor were recognized for their nomination to the 

<strong>2013</strong> New Mexico All-State and All-USA Academic Teams 

on February 20 during a ceremony in Santa Fe during the state 

legislative session. 

In addition to the All-State honor, Martinez was also named 

a <strong>2013</strong> Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Silver 

Scholar. Only 50 silver scholars are named from the entire 

country and each receives a $1,250 scholarship and a special 

medallion. 

Cristol Martinez Prior to enrolling at San Juan College, Martinez was working 

in a bank but decided she wanted a better career. Originally 

from Bloomfield and currently living in Farmington, Martinez 

completed the Medical Laboratory Technician program in 

December but continues to take courses that are prerequisites 

to her bachelor’s degree. She plans to attend UNM and enter the 

medical laboratory scientist program. 

“It took a lot of work because the MLT program is so 

demanding,” Martinez said. “It wasn’t easy but the program was 

very rewarding and I enjoyed the entire experience. I wanted to 

show my five kids that anything is possible and to never give up. 

The faculty at San Juan College was always helpful and supportive. 

They really encouraged and nourished the relationships with 

students and among students.” 

Nicki Villasenor Nicki Villasenor will graduate in the spring of 2014 with a 

degree in biology. Villasenor is working toward a degree in biology and will then pursue a 

Bachelor’s degree and career in Ecology. She hopes to one day find a job in reconciliation 

ecology, where scientists incorporate wild species back into a human-dominated habitat, to 

teach humans and animals to live with each other as opposed to living separately. 

“Before I began attending San Juan College, I didn’t even know what I wanted to do 

in my life,” Villasenor said. “After a few biology courses, I realized that I wanted to pursue 

biology further. I want to make a difference in this world and now I feel I can. I didn’t feel like I 

had that before I attended San Juan College.” 

Both students were nominated for the All-State and All-USA Academic Team by San Juan 

College’s Office of the President. In addition to evaluating outstanding classroom achievement, 

judges also consider how the students apply their academic, intellectual or leadership 

skills to benefit their campus and community.

Let Kids Kollege make 

this the Summer for You !

ids Kollege has been a summer tradition at San 

Juan College for 26 years – long enough to see 

students pass through and go onto use their 

“kollege knowledge” in real life. 

This is especially true for Carl Brown, whose mother, Alyssa, 

enrolled him in Kids Kollege when he was about 12 years 

old. Carl attended a class for youth interested in the medical 

field where the students were able to tour San Juan Regional 

Medical Center and do other medical-oriented activities. 

“Looking back, that one class helped set into motion the 

course of his life,” Alyssa says today. “Kids Kollege can have a 

profound impact and significant effect on our young people – 

I’ve seen it firsthand.” 

Carl also witnessed his younger sister’s accident and, 

from then on, he knew he wanted to be a doctor so he could 

help people. After graduating high school and from New 

Mexico State University, Carl will graduate from UNM School of 

Medicine in May. 

Registration has begun for this year’s Kids Kollege, presented 

by the Community Learning Center at San Juan College. 

Parents can register their children for classes now through July 22. 

Kids Kollege can help make this summer the Summer for 

You! Explore new activities, expand your interests and experience 

fun firsthand. Kids Kollege runs from June 3 to July 26 and will 

include seven one-week sessions. 

The sessions are as follows: 

• Session 1 – June 3-7 




• Session 5 – July 8-12 



Over 200 classes are offered this summer ranging from Lego 

Robotics to Preschool Job Fair to Edible Experiments and many 

more. Classes are open for youth ages 4-15 and also include 

subjects like Math Magic or practical applications of chemistry 

in Cosmetic Science. 

New students must be registered by a parent in person at 

the CLC located on the Farmington campus in the West Classroom 

Complex, between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday through 

Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays. Registration is 

also available at San Juan College East and San Juan College 

West. Students can continue to register for individual sessions 

throughout the summer. Parents will be asked to provide their 

child’s social security number. Returning students may register online.

Daniels Fund Grant Helps SJC Mentor Kids at Boys and Girls Club 

Thanks to a $15,000 Daniels Fund grant for the 2012-<strong>2013</strong> 

year, San Juan College digital media and design students in 

Luke Renner’s video and TV production classes are mentoring 

35-40 Farmington Boys and Girls Club members. The classes 

expose them to the media world and skills they need for a 

career in that field, and they encourage them to pursue higher 

education. 

Grant goals are that 90 percent of participants will demonstrate 

gains in technology skills, reading and writing. 

The Daniels Fund was founded through the legacy of Bill 

Daniels, who became a billionaire pioneering the cable television 

industry. 

“We’re working on the technology involved with capturing 

news and giving Boys and Girls Club members exposure to going 

out with the camera,” said Renner, SJC assistant professor of 

Digital Media Arts and Design. 

With the help of Debbie Higgs, who coordinates the 

project with SJC and the Boys and Girls Club, they came up with 

several news stories for club members to work on. 

“We had a couch that lost its stuffing,” Renner said. 

“We’re doing an investigative report of what happened to the 

couch. We interviewed people at the club about who the best 

pool players were. We’re doing a story about the club’s community 

garden.” 

Mike Neergaard, who will graduate from SJC this May, is 

taking the TV Production class. He helped club members work 

on a Umattr Kids music video, which promotes such things 

as making good decisions, valuing others, and living free of 

drugs, alcohol and tobacco. 

“Maybe I’ve helped some kids learn to make better decisions,” 

he said. 

Mason Monk, a Piedra Vista High School senior, is taking 

the same class as an early admit college student. He enjoyed 

showing club members how to come up with news story ideas, 

shoot and anchor the stories, and work with equipment. 

“It helped me learn even more by teaching the kids,” 

Monk said. “Being in the media is becoming a big job 

industry. It helps kids gain knowledge and exposure to the 

field early in life in case they decide later on to choose a 

media career.”

SJC Dental Hygiene Students Put a 

Bite into New Museum Exhibit

The San Juan College Dental Hygiene Program teamed 

with E3 to create the “Smart Smiles” exhibit that opened in 

April at the Children’s Museum in Farmington. The SJC dental 

hygiene students were involved in the design and implementation 

of the exhibit with the support of the staff from E3 

Children’s Museum, Northwest Dental District Society and 

Tres Rios Dental Hygiene Society. 

The dental hygiene students are required to complete a 

community oral health project as part of their Dental Public 

Health course. The project must benefit the community. 

“This oral health exhibit provides the opportunity for 

San Juan College students to take a theoretical concept and 

put it into practice, allowing for hands-on experience in public 

health,” said Tammy Sanderson, a dental hygiene instructor

at San Juan College. “The collaboration between San Juan College 

and the E3 Children’s Museum gives children and parents 

in our community a chance to become familiar and comfortable 

with the dental environment as well as receive education 

on oral health. With foot traffic of more than 25,000 visitors 

annually, the museum exhibit offers a fun, interactive and 

educational experience for families.” 

The display will include a faux dental office that will include 

a dental chair, x-ray unit, lab coats and more in an effort 

to make children more comfortable during their regular visits 

to the dentist. Five different hands-on stations also will be 

available for children to visit including a healthy eating station 

to help promote quality oral health in all aspects of life. 

The E3 Children’s Museum is located at 302 N. Orchard

Three artists combine their different talents, skills 

and techniques for a show that will range from prints, paintings and encaustic 

paint works. Encaustic paints are made from beeswax, dammar tree resin 

and pigments to create various colors. It is applied in a liquid state, hardens 

almost immediately and additional layers are “burned” in with heat. Join us

Sandra Humphries presents her series of all one-of-a-kind original paintings in 

this series called Monotypes. Each monotype starts as a painting on a metal 

plate before being sent through a press, transferred to a drum and printed 

onto paper. Humphries draws color texture and shape inspirations from years

Fran Mayfield and Stephen Unger will present their series of paintings that will

his pieces are “conveying a moment in time and place that the person can 

feel a part of.” Mayfield has begun to experiment with the acrylic medium and 

hopes to speak about the world in her own voice through her works. Join us
